This issue is the fifth in the Typically Dutch series this year.

Earlier this year, PostNL published stamps featuring:

b) "Wooden Houses" (22 February),

c) "Canal Houses" (22 March) and

d) "Houseboats" (6th April 2021)

PostNL has now issued a final stamp sheet in the "Typically Dutch Stamp Series" on 14 June featuring "Terraced Houses".

About Typically Dutch Postage Stamp Series - "Terraced Houses":

As discussed above, this year, the "Typically Dutch Postage Stamp Series" focuses on House Types and façades that are typical for the Netherlands.

In this respect, nothing is more typical of the Netherlands than "Terraced Houses".

Out of 7.0 million homes in the Netherlands, 4.0  million are terraced houses.

No country in the world has as many terraced houses as the Netherlands and three-quarters date from after 1945.

The origin of this type of house in the Netherlands lies in the identical houses in the courtyards that were built from the end of the 15th century onwards.

Since then, the terraced house has always been associated with social improvement, initially due to the charity of church communities, philanthropists or enlightened factory managers and in the 20th century due to the welfare state.

The terraced house from the reconstruction period is a classic house with a through lounge.

The lounge is on the street side and the dining area and kitchen are at the back. There are wide windows on both sides that make the house almost transparent.

Until the 1960s, these open blocks of rational housing were being built all over the Netherlands.

In the 1970s, the rectangular reconstruction blocks were succeeded by "bloemkoolwijken" ("cauliflower neighbourhoods"), with erratic parcelling and residential areas. Terraced houses in these neighbourhoods often have their kitchen on the street side, sometimes with an extension providing storage space.

Vinex neighbourhoods emerged in the 1990s, with a huge variety in parcelling and house types but still dominated by terraced houses.

The Commemorative Stamps:

The Terraced Houses on the stamps were built in 2000. They are actually in De Plaetse, in the middle of the new housing development called Brandevoort in west Helmond.

A Sheetlet of six stamps

A First Day Cover (FDC) has an individual stamp affixed at top right, The special Cancellation Handstamp/Postmark bears an image of a "Terraced Houses" in the centre and is dated - "14.06.2021".

The centre of Brandevoort is laid out like an old Brabant fortress town, with its ramparts, canals and town houses. The houses’ roof heights and façade architecture vary and were made using traditional materials, giving the impression of a town that emerged naturally.
