Evolution of Chess as a game:

Chess originated in India, where its early form in the 6th Century was "Chaturanga" (meaning "four divisions of the military") - infantry, cavalry, elephants and chariots, represented respectively by pawn, knight, bishop and rook.

In Persia, around the 7th Century, the name of the game was "Shatranj". In Spanish the game is called "Ajedrez" and in Greek "Zatrikon" The game reached Western Europe and Russia in the 9th Century AD and by the next century had spread all over Europe.

Around 1200 AD, the rules of Shatranj began to be modified and by about 1475, major changes had taken place in the game which have carried on to the present day.

By the 18th Century, Chess had become a rgage all over Europe and several European Cafes became centres of chess games as a pastime. Later many chess clubs, chess organisations, journals popularised the game all over the world.

Chess is today a very popular sport. Millions of people on the Globe play this ancient, intellectual game.
