The UK Treasury has announced that Commemorative Coins in the denomination of 50 Pence are scheduled for release on 31.01.2020 - the day of the country's breaking off its membership with the European Union.
As a result of the landslide election victory on 12.12.2019, Boris Johnsin, Prime Minister, who had assumed the post earlier in 07/2019, has been able to pass his proposal for Britain's exit from the single European Union (EU) market, which had permitted the United Kingdom to join in 1973, which was then called the "European Economic Community" (EEC).
Boris Johnson signed the agreement into law - which received Royal assent from Queen Elizabeth II on 24.01.2020. The final agreement was also signed by Ursula Van der Leyen, the new President of the European Commission on the same day, paving the way for the UK to effectively leave the EU on 31.01.2020 - three and a half years after the initial referendum in which UK voters had voted with a majority to leave the EU. The European Parliament is scheduled to give its final approval for the Withdrawal Agreement on 29.01.2020.
What is the future of the once "mighty" British Empire on which at one time, the "Sun Never Set", now reduced to a small group of island countries united together, after their exit from the EU, remains to be seen. Only the future will tell!! Will the Sun shine on them again or there will be darkness & despair, as the nay-sayers have been tom-tomming. We wish them all the very best of luck!!
The Commemorative Coin:
The BREXIT Coin was attempted several times before, but its release got delayed twice previously, due to the design that includes the actual day of departure. On both occasions (03/2019 and 10/2019), the dates got extended. As such, 1,000 prototypes dated "29 March" and over one million pieces dated "31st OCTOBER" were got destroyed or recycled.
The new releases will accordingly, be the third "BREXIT" consignment and the fourth time in which an EU-themed design will be released for circulation. (The first time was when Great Britain had joined the EEC in 1973, the change-over to the European Union in 1992 and the third time, when the UK held the rotating EU presidency.
The Reverse of the 50 Pence Circulation Coin will carry a simplified, stylised script which reads - "Peace, prosperity and friendship with all nations. 31 January 2020".
These words are borrowed from the writings that partially quote America's third President and author of the US Declaration of Independence - Thomas Jefferson.
The mintage is going to be about three million BREXIT coins, with a further seven million slated to be added later in 2020.
