Cognac is a variety of Brandy named after the commune of Cognac, France.
It is produced in the surrounding wine-growing region in the departments of Charente and Charente-Maritime.
Cognac production falls under the French "appellation d'origine controlee" designation (The "appelation d'origine controlle" is a French Certification granted to certain French Geographical indications (GIs) wines, cheeses, butters and other agricultural products, under the auspices of the government bureau - "Institut national des appellations d'origine" (now called "Institut national de i'origine et de la qualite" - INAO).
The appellation designation is given when the production and naming methods meet certain legal specifications/requirements.
Among the specified grapes - Ugni blanc - (known locally as Saint-Emillion is most widely used, which is one of the most beautiful villages in France..
The brandy must be distilled twice in copper pot stills and aged at least two years in French oak barrels from Limousin or Troncais.
Cognac matures in the same way as whiskies and wines barrel age and most Cognacs spend considerably longer "on the wood" than the minimum legal requirements.
The white wine used in making Cognac is very dry, acidic and thin. It is excellent for distillation and aging. It is made only from a strict list of grape varieties.
For it to be considered to be "Cru", the wine must be at least 90% Ugni blanc (known in Italy as Trebbiano), Folle blanche and Colombard, while up to 10% of the grapes used can be Folignan, Jurancon blanc, Meslier St.-Francois, Montils or Semillon.

This coin contains a drop of the oldest Cognac in the world - Cognac Gautier 1762. The Cognac of 1762 was granted the title of the oldest Cognac sold at public auctions and found a mention in the Guinness Book of World Records.
1762 was an important year in world history - the unveiling of the famous di Trevi fountain in Rome, Jean-Jacques Rousseau's publication of his Social Contract, Catherine the Great becoming the emperor of Russia, (after having her husband imprisoned and murdered by her henchmen).

On the Reverse of the 100 Francs Gold Proof Coin are seen images that refer to the nature of Cognac - contour map of France, historical Cognac house buildings, oak casks and demijohns.
The inscription is "COGNAC 1762" placed in the centre.
On the Obverse of the 100 Francs Gold Proof Coin is seen the Emblem of the Democratic Republic of the Congo dividing the year of issue into two parts - 20/19.
On the periphery with decorative dots is the inscription - "REPUBLIQUE DEMOCRATIQUE DU CONGO" (in French), "Au 999.9" (Metal Composition), "MW" (mint Mark).

There is a drop of Cognac contained on every one of these gold coins which comes from the1762 vintage stocks. 1762 Cognac features in the Guinness Book of World Records as the best ever made, Vikram. Wonder how it will taste like.
