About Dutch Horse Breeds:

On 13.09.2021, PostNL (Netherlands Post) has published the Dutch Horse Breeds Stamp issue, comprising a sheet of ten stamps featuring the Friesian, Gelderland, Groningen and Dutch draught horse.

The denomination on these stamps is ‘1’, the denomination for items weighing up to 20g destined for the Netherlands.

There are 4 breeds of horses with origins in the Netherlands

the Friesian horse, the Gelderland horse, the Groningen horse and the Dutch draught horse.

Even though the horse breeds couldn’t be more different, all four have a placid, friendly character.

Characteristic features of the Friesian horse are its black coat colour, long, thick mane and tail and the ‘feather’ on the lower legs.

The breed also stands out because of its brisk, powerful and high-stepping gaits (movement pattern of the animal's limbs).

Friesians are extremely popular for dressage. Colours: jet black, coal black and faded black.

Number of mares: 30,000.

The Gelderland horse is a middleweight horse with a fairly long neck, long, sloping shoulder, broad, full chest and broad, prominent withers.

The Gelderland is a versatile horse well-suited for driving, show jumping and dressage.

Colours are chestnut, bay, black and grey. Number of mares: 1261.

The Groningen horse can be recognised by its middleweight, powerful and muscular build.

These horses have an expressive head, muscular neck and a broad, deep barrel. The back is not too long, and the broad, powerful loins and haunches accentuate its strong gaits.

Colours are bay, dark bay, black with occasional white. Number of mares: 449.

The Dutch draught horse is a large, heavily-built horse with a broad, short muscular neck, back and hind quarters.

The height at the withers is between 1.60 and 1.75 m and, weighing in at between 750 and 1000 kg, they are pretty hefty animals.

Colours: chestnut, black and bay. Number of mares: 3000.

The Dutch horse breeds stamp sheet was brought out in collaboration with the Koninklijke Vereniging Het Friesch Paarden-Stamboek (KFPS, Royal Friesian), Koninklijk Warmbloed Paardenstamboek Nederland (KWPN, Royal Dutch Sport Horse), Vereniging het Groninger Paard (Groninger Horse Society), and Koninklijke Vereniging het Nederlandse Trekpaard (Royal Dutch Draft Horse Society).

The pictures feature Friesian horse Izaak (from Hemrik, Friesland), Gelderland horse Hobyant (from Emmer-Compascuum, Drenthe), Groningen horse Legende and her filly Sophia (from Wijdewormer, North Holland) and Dutch draft horse Bonnie (from Kampen, Overijssel).

    1. It was. Thanks Lalit. I believe that Maharana Pratap's horse Chetak was of Kathiawari breed. He was called the "Rider of the blue horse".
