Derivation of the Varanasi City name:

Banaras as this city is known as from ancient times was renamed Varanasi in 1956, which was derived from two holy rivers “Varana” and “Asi”, which meet the River Ganges within six miles.

Banaras was also known as “Kashi” (meaning “where the supreme light shines”), when it was the capital of the kingdom of the same name around 500 BC. It has always been a place of worship of the God Shiva and his earthly abode, since ancient times and the most famous and visited pilgrimage destination in India. This city is considered to be the cultural and religious capital of India.

Banaras or Varanasi or Kashi is considered to be one of the seven Holy Cities, one of the twelve “Jyotir Lings” and also a “Shakti Peeth” and is, therefore, one of the most holy places for Hindus.

About Varanasi:

The city has developed/grown on the banks of the sacred river Ganges or “Ganga” in Hindu mythology and is celebrated as a seat of all enlightenment, wisdom and learning. It is said to combine the virtues of all other places of pilgrimage and anyone who ends their earthly cycle here is said to attain “Moksha” (meaning “Liberation from the Cycle of Birth, Death, Rebirth”) and is said to attain a permanent abode in “Swarg Lok” (meaning “heaven”).

This city has been the favoured hermitage site for several of India’s most venerated sages – Gautama Buddha, Mahavir (one of the Teerthankars of Jainism) Sant Kabir (Saint Kabir), Tulsi Das (who wrote the Ramayan – a Hindu Mythological text), Shankracharya, Ramanuja and the sage Patanjali all have meditated here at various points in the city’s history. Sarnath is encompassed in the city of Varanasi, where Gautam Buddha preached his first sermon around 530 BC.

The famous bathing and burning Ghats of Varanasi:

The term “Ghats” in most of North India, refers to a series of steps leading down to a body of water or river – particularly a Holy River. Since the ancient times, Kashi or Varanasi is considered to be the holiest of cities for Hindus who come to bathe in the sacred Ganga River.

As a result, almost the entire city’s over 5 km of river banks have been converted into “Ghats” (meaning “bathing area” – normally having steps leading upto the river-front). The Ghats of Varanasi are world-renowned embankments made in steps of stone slabs along the Ganges River bank where pilgrims perform ritual ablutions.

The Ghats are an integral complement to the Hindu concept of divinity represented in physical, metaphysical and supernatural elements. The city has around 89 bathing and burning Ghats, of which Manikarnika Ghat is considered to be the most sacred. This is the main burning Ghat and considered to be one of the most auspicious places.

The Bathing & Cremation Ghats:

The majority of the Ghats on the River Ganges at Varanasi were constructed after 1700 AD, when the city was a part of the Maratha Empire. The patrons who built/frequented the present Ghats were the Shindes (Scindias), Holkars, Bhonsles and the Peshwes (Peshwas), while several Ghats are privately owned.

Some of the more popular Ghats are Dash-Ashwamedh Ghat, Manikarnika Ghat, Harishchandra Ghat, Scindia Ghat, Maan-Mandir Ghat, Lalita Ghat etc.

Of these, the Dash-Ashwamedh Ghat located near the Vishwanath Temple is the most spectacular Ghat.

Two Hindu legends are associated with it:

The first legend has it the Lord Brahma, built it to welcome Lord Shiva.

The second legend mentions that Lord Brahma sacrificed ten horses, during the “Dash-Aswamedha Yagna” (meaning the “sacrifice of ten horses through Vedic rites accompanied with a sacred fire and mantras”).

The Harishchandra and Manikarnika Ghats are used for cremation purposes apart from several others. It is believed by the Hindus that the Ghats of Varanasi are one of the most auspicious locations for the ritual of “rite of passage”, when the cremation or “last rites” are performed amidst “poojas” (prayers), hymns and “mantras” (sacred chants).

Varanasi – a city of thousands of ancient temples:

Varanasi is also known for having around 23,000 temples of which the most popular ones are the Kashi Vishwanath Temple of Lord Shiva (also known as the Golden Temple); one of the 12 Jyotirlings Shiva temples, the Sankat Mochan Temple (dedicated to Lord Hanuman), the 18^th Century Durga Kund Temple (known for monkeys that reside in the large trees nearby) are some of the most sacred temples.

Varanasi – A major commercial centre – Silk Weaving and Carpet Weaving et al:

The City serves as a major commercial centre in the Eastern part of the Indian State of Uttar Pradesh and Western Bihar State. Silk Weaving is the dominant industry in Varanasi. The City is known throughout India for its production of very fine silk and Banarasi sarees, brocades with gold and silver thread work, which are often used for weddings and special occasions.

Other major commodities manufactured and traded in Varanasi include the hand-knotted Bhadohi carpets, rugs, durries, brassware, copperware, wooden and clay toys, handicrafts, gold jewellery and musical instruments.

Varanasi – A Centre of Education & Learning:

Varanasi is also a notable centre of education. Banaras Hindu University (BHU), among other institutions, is one of the oldest and largest educational institutions and is one of India’s most prominent seats of learning.

 It was founded by Mahamana Madan Mohan Malaviya in 1916 and with a 1,300 acre campus on the outskirts of the city, is one of the largest residential universities in India. It has discipline of both the ancient Indian Ayurvedic science, Colleges of Engineering, Agriculture, Commerce, Technology, Music, Fine Arts, Theology, and Oriental Studies among others.

Present Day:

From the serene city of antiquity with gently rolling hills, lush forests and natural springs bordered by the waters of the sacred River Ganges, Varanasi has today grown into a crowded, bustling and noisy city, nevertheless, the undertone still remains one of  peacefulness and of the spiritual wisdom of the sages and the seat of religious learning.

The city has not only maintained the religious and cultural importance it has had since antiquity, but vibrates with an underlying spiritual energy which attracts tourists and theologians from all over the World.

Varanasi City: A Commemorative Postage stamp brought out by the Department of Posts, India on 24.10.2016:

The First Day Cover (FDC) on the bottom is inscribed “Varanasi Shahar” (in Hindi) and “Varanasi City” (in English) and  shows the City of Varanasi as it has grown along the Banks of the River Ganges or Ganga. The 500 Paise or Rs.5/- Stamp also shows a similar image. The Cancellation Stamp is inscribed “Varanasi Shahar” (in Hindi) and “Varanasi City” (in English). The Cancellation Stamp is of New Delhi GPO and is dated “24.10.2016”.
