408) AIIMS (All-India Institute of Medical Sciences): A Commemorative Stamp in the denomination of 500 Paise or Rs.5/-  released by the Department of Posts or India-Post  on 03.12.2016.

Establishment and Objectives of AIIMS

All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) was established in 1956 as an Institution of National Importance by an Act of Parliament with the objectives of:

- developing patterns of teaching in Undergraduate and Post-graduate Medical Education in all its branches so as to demonstrate a high standard of Medical Education in India;

- to bring together in one place educational facilities of the highest order for the training of personnel in all important branches of health activity; and

- to attain self-sufficiency in Post-graduate Medical Education.

AIIMS is located at Ansari Nagar in Delhi, adjacent to the South Extension-II market, and lies on the south-eastern quadrant of Aurobindo Marg and Inner Ring Road crossing.

It was the vision of Rajkumari Amrit Kaur, the first Health Minister of India, to establish an institute of such nature in India.

New Delhi chosen as an alternate venue after West Bengal did not accept the proposal to establish the Institute at Calcutta:

AIIMS was established in New Delhi after the Central Government’s initial proposal to set up the institute in Calcutta (present day Kolkata) was turned down by the then Chief Minister of West Bengal Bidhan Chandra Roy.

The Institute's buildings were formally inaugurated by the British monarch on January 27, 1961 at an impressive ceremony attended by the then President Rajendra Prasad.

About the AIIMS:

AIIMS was envisaged as an inclusive institution that represented a synthesis of medical excellence with compassion and care to serve India’s poorest of the poor. The spirit of the AIIMS Act and the AIIMS Regulations have enabled sustained growth of excellence in the Institute.

AIIMS Regulations were approved in the 2nd Meeting of the Governing Body on 02.09.1957 although they were notified in 1999.

Since its inception, AIIMS has been an Institute for high meritocracy. The Geographical spread of students was initially from the Delhi and nearby areas, but over the years the Institute has been attracting bright talent from all over India. In addition, students from other countries like Australia, Germany, USA, UK and SAARC nations visit AIIMS for elective trainings. Courses are administered to students from Maldives, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan, Mauritius and India.

Present Day:

AIIMS continues to shape the future as it educates the next generation of leaders in medicine and science and has been ranked the country’s best medical institute for the past many years. It has earned a high reputation in the field of Medicine and for its significant contribution in academic quality, student care, infrastructure and placement opportunities.

With its 9 centres and 52 teaching departments and personnel of over 10,000 including over 800 Faculty positions, AIIMS brings out a large number of Specialists (MD/MS), Super-Specialists (DM/M.Ch), PhD scholars and Allied health and basic scienes experts, including nurses and paramedical professionals.

The Institute has comprehensive facilities for teaching, research and patient-care. As provided in the Act, AIIMS conducts teaching programs in medical and para-medical courses both at undergraduate and postgraduate levels and awards its own degrees. Teaching and research are conducted in 42 disciplines. In the field of medical research AIIMS is the lead, having more than 600 research publications by its faculty and researchers in a year. AIIMS also runs a College of Nursing and trains students for B.Sc. (Hons.), Nursing post-certificate degrees etc.

In the coming years, AIIMS has plans to establish/expand many more specialised centres like Surgical Block, Geriatric Centre, Mother and Child Health Care Centre, Emergency Block etc. It is in the process of setting up of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) at Jhajjar, which will be the largest tertiary healthcare facility (both Public and Private Sector) in India since Independence.

AIIMS continually reviews the methodology of imparting knowledge of medicine and science so as to nurture a passion for innovation. The Nation’s healthcare delivery system is undergoing a rapid change and Bio-medical Science and Technology are advancing at a tremendous pace.

Today, AIIMS has evolved into a “poor man’s” hospital for tertiary care for about 3700,000 patients who have come to the Institute for medical care and treatment.  In the last 60 years AIIMS has significantly contributed in various areas of health care such as malnutrition, diarrheal diseases, liver diseases, tuberculosis, cervical cancer, Vitamin D, Iodine deficiency disorders, as well as, it has contributed immensely to stem cell research.

In addition, AIIMS has established collaborations with US, UK, France, Japan and Sweden in carrying out research. AIIMS research work has influenced several National Programmes related to health care for example – ICDS (Integrated Child Development Scheme), Universal Iodisation of Salt (UIS), National Blindness Control Programme (NBCP), Fluorosis Control Programme (FCP), Tobacco Control Programme (TCP), National Programme on Health Care of Elderly (NPHCE), Hepatitis Vaccination Policy (HVP), HCV testing in Blood Banks, Introduction of unleaded petrol, National Trauma Care Policy (NTCP) etc.

In retrospect:

AIIMS has been undergoing a quiet revolution over the years in bringing innovative and patient oriented services so as to cater to the huge number of patients who look up to AIIMS as the final eord in affordable and quality healthcare.

In effort to streamline the rush for out-patient consultations, AIIMS has a computerised appointment system for scheduling patient appointments upto a week in advance.

A free generic Pharmacy outlet provides medicines to the weaker sections of the society.

Driving achievement at AIIMS are the many exceptional members of its community. It has fully lived up to its mandate given by Parliament to assist the Government in its endeavour to provide quality healthcare to poor Indians.

For the AIIMS Faculty, trainees and staff alike, every day is a celebration of study and practice of medicine – from dedicated clinical care to dedicated education and scientific discovery.
