The origin of hand fans can be back thousands of years in India and Egypt. It was seen as a sacred instrument used in religious ceremonies and was also seen as a symbol of power. It was also in use by the ancient people for example the Hebrews, Persians, Greeks, Romans et al.
The folding hand fan is believed to have been invented in Japan or China with legends built around its use abounding in both countries as to its creation/use.
In Japan, the fan was molded after the wings of a bat, while in China it is said to have been devised , when a woman was fanning her face mask at a festival.
The fan found its way to Europe in the 1500s by way of the Silk Trade Routes/Roads and became an exotic and stylish symbol of wealth and class.
The origins of Indian hand fans can be traced back to the ancient times, when they were used in temples to fan deities, in the royal courts and in households. There is a mention of fans in the Indian Epic poem - Mahabharat.
Temple fans vary in size from tiny two inch fans to large fans needing the full strength of a person to move them.
The villages and towns of the Indian sub-continent have varieties of traditional hand fans. In each place, the hand fans are made of different materials and have intricate designs.
Traditional crafts have survived in India because rural folk still make and use them. The same is true with traditional Indian hand fans, as the general public in villages and towns are still connected with traditional hand fans. The craft of fan making is done mainly by women all over India.
There are antique ceiling fans from the Mughal and Colonial period that were pulled by "Pankhawalas" (persons employed for pulling ropes connected to the hand-pulled ceiling fans) from outside the room and used for large congregations in temples, royal courts and offices.
Indian hand fans have many varieties, some fans are embellished with beads, silk, satin, some include paintings, prints, miniatures, patterns which tell a story of its origin from the past to present.

4) Mirror Work Hand Fan, Gujarat: The Indian State of Gujarat is well known for its Mirror Work Hand Fans which are beautiful ethnic fans made of pure cotton and embellished with mirror work to produce elaborate designs. Beads and mirror hand fans are now used as wall decorations too.

5) Phadh Hand Fan, Uttar Pradesh: Phadh Hand Fan is a rare and antique fan with pure gold and silver zari, silk and satin frills. It was used to fan congregations of royalty and nobles.

7) Satin Ceiling Fan, Rajasthan: This is a variety of hand-pulled ceiling fans with silk and satin frills which was used in royal households. A rope was tied to the fan which passed through a hole, pulled by a "Pankhawalla" sitting outside the room.

9) Feather Hand Fan, Delhi: These fans are made of peacock feathers. Each feather consists of tiny flat branches. It has a variety of decorative uses. These hand fans are available in many parts of North india including Delhi and Rajasthan.
10) Sola Pith Hand Fan, Bengal: West Bengal is famous for its Sola Pith art and craft which includes hand fans. These hand fans are made by beautiful milky-white sponge wood of the Sola tree, a plant of the bean family - generally found in marshy water-logged areas.
Sola pith reed hand fans are used for "Devi" (Goddess) worship and are very delicate.

ReplyDelete"Very much interesting and entertaining information about 'Indian Hand Fans'. I was amused to know that Indian Post Office has taken cognizance of this and issued postal stamps on the subject. Of course such efforts by GOI to promote Indian Culture are appreciable.
The earlier Director General, Philately at New Delhi was a very progressive and outstanding officer, Rambhau. He was implementing several suggestions received from Philatelists on Indian culture, customs and traditions. In fact, he had an open channel through which one could communicate topics and ideas for taking out stamps. In fact, if he liked an idea or a post on Philatelic blogs like mine, he would unhesitatingly have complimentary gifts sent out, from recent Philatelic issues. These are all ideas implemented during his time. I do not see much "innovativeness" with the present lot. at the helm of affairs.
