The University of Mysore is a public state university in Mysore, Karnataka. The University was founded on 27th July 1916 during the reign of Krishnaraja Wadiyar IV, the Maharaja of Mysore.
Its Chancellor was the Maharaja of Mysore, the first Vice-Chancellor was H.V. Nunjundaiah. Sri M. Visvesvarayya, then Dewan of Mysore also played a major role in the promotion of this university.
The University became the first university outside of (the) British administration in India and the first in Karnataka.
It is a state university of the affiliating type and became autonomous on 3rd March 1956, when it gained recognition from the University Grants Commission.
This University has produced three Bharat Ratnas namely, Sri M. Visvesvarayya, the major role (player) in the promotion of the university, the teacher S.Radhakrishnan (he taught at the university from 1918 to 1921) and the student C.N.R. Rao.
The Government of India (GOI) has released this Rs.5/- Commemorative Coin to mark the occasion of the University of Mysore centenary celebrations on 23rd December 2016."

The Obverse of the Rs. 5/- coin on a stand-alone basis
It shows the name of the issuing country "Bharat" (in Hindi) and "India" (in English) on the centre left and right peripheries respectively. The Emblem of the Government of India which is the Lion Capitol of the legendary "Samrat" (Emperor) Ashok of ancient India is on top in the centre, together with the legend "Satyameva Jayate" (meaning "Truth Always Prevails"). At the extreme bottom is the denomination of the coin"Rs.5/-"in numerals.
Page 4 of the Coin album shows the Reverse of the Rs.5/- Coin and an image of the University and its founder. There is a brief description of the remaining specifications of this coin in both Hindi and English. It also contains a stylised representation of the University of Mysore at the lower bottom.

On the upper periphery is inscribed "Mysoor Vishvidyalaya Shatabdi Samaroh" (in Hindi) and on the lower periphery "UNIVERSITY OF MYSORE CENTENARY CELEBRATIONS."

The university emblem is adapted from the Royal Emblem of Mysore.
It depicts the bird "Gandabherunda" flanked on either side by the lion-elephant "Sharaba" (mythical creature believed to be stronger than the lion and the elephant and upholder of righteousness) surmounted by a lion.
The Motto of the University is "Na Hi Jnanena Sadrisham" (meaning "Nothing is equal to Knowledge") and on the scroll below is mentioned "Satyamevoddahramuaham" (meaning "I always Uphold The Truth"), which together summarise the vision, moral fabric and idealism of the founders and of the university.

The University was granted autonomy in 1956. Originally the territorial jurisdiction of the University consisted of none districts of Karnataka State. with the creation of Bangalore university in 1964, Mangalore University in 1980 and Kuvempu University in 1987, the territorial jurisdiction of the University of Mysore is now confined to the four Southern districts of the State - Chamarajanagara, Hassan, Mandya and Mysuru.

To aspire to become a world-class University by tapping human resources from all sections of society by offering them opportunities to learn across disciplines and to build human capital, men and women of character and competence capable of being leaders of tomorrow and solving problems arising out of fast changing realities - global and local.

The University library has over 800,000 books, 2,500 journal titles and 100,000 volumes of journals. The main campus has an amphitheatre, an auditorium, a swimming pool and multiple hostel accomodations for students.
