The Background for the new Coin Series issue of 2019:

The National Bank of Kazakhstan has issued a new Series of Coins on 26.04.2019, that include text in the Latin alphabet, which the country began to transition to in 2017.

The new coin issue is part of a Presidential Decree initiated by former President Nazarbaev, who announced in 04/2017 that all national publications, documents, correspondences and street signs in Kazakhstan will switch from a Cyrillic-based alphabet to a Latin-based alphabet by 2025. At the same time, the then President had also issued a decree that national coinage will also undergo a change in according to the 04/2017 decree.

This move was an effort by the Kazakh government in Almaty to emphasize distinct Kazakh culture and distance the nation from both Russian influence and the Soviet Era, which Kazakhstan declared its independence from in 1991.

In 1929, Soviet authorities replaced traditional Arabic-based alphabets used by Muslim minorities in the Soviet Union with Latin-based national alphabets.

In 1940, the Latin alphabet was replaced entirely with Cyrillic and was enforced upon the whole of the Soviet Union until its disintegration in 1991/92.

In 1993, the first Banknotes were issued by the newly established National Bank of Kazakhstan in both Tiyn and Tenge denominations, with the first circulation Tiyn Coins coming into use in 1994.

A brief about the 2019 Coin Series:

The new designs of the coins are dated "2019" and are identical in weight and diameter/size to the previously circulating coins that carries inscriptions in the Cyrillic-based alphabet.

The release of the new coins in the denominations of - 100, 50, 20, 10, 5, 2 and 1 Tenge -  took effect on 26.04.2019.
The higher denominations - 100, 50, 20,10 Tenge coins of the 2019- Series

The lower denominations - 5, 2 and 1 Tenge Coins - 2019 Series

On the Obverse faces, the coins continue to depict Kazakhstan's Coat Of Arms with the words "QAZAQSTAN RESPYBLIKASY" (meaning the "Republic of Kazakhstan").

On the Reverse faces, the coins bear the coin denomination represented in numerals with the name of the national currency "TENGE" and the initials of the National Bank of Kazakhstan "QUB".

The previous issue of circulation coins will continue to remain legal tender.

The date of changeover to the new Banknotes will take place sometime in the future.
