Paris 2024 Olympic Games:

The Monnaie de Paris has released the second series of hexagonal-shaped Gold and Silver Commemorative Coins marking the XXXIII Olympiad scheduled to be hosted in the city of Paris in 2024

Having previously hosted in 1900 and 1924, Paris will become only the second city to host the Summer Olympic Games three times after London in 1908, 1948, and 2012

The Games are scheduled to take place from the 26.07.2024 to the 11.08.2024, with Paris acting as the main host city together with 16 additional cities spread across Metropolitan France, including the remote French Overseas Territory (FOT) in the South Pacific of Tahiti as a sub-site.

The coins highlight this international competition through a collection of coin designs highlighting sport, its values, the athletes and, the country’s heritage as host.

The Olympic and Paralympic spirit is being celebrated with the themes and motifs over a four-year series concluding in 2024.

The build-up to the Paris Summer Games - 2024:

On the occasion of the 2024 Paris Summer Games, Monnaie de Paris will focus on this renowned international competition through a Gold and Silver Coin collection highlighting sport, its values, the athletes and also  French heritage.

Olympism and Paralympism are being celebrated on these products, minted by the Monnaie de Paris (The Paris Mint).

Following the postponement of the Tokyo Olympics in 2020 (on account of the outbreak of the Chinese Wuhan Virus also known as Covid-19), the year 2021 officially marked the start of the countdown to the Paris Games.

It was the handing over of the Olympic flag during the closing ceremony of the Games that marked the start of a new era of "Games à la Française".

This torch transfer will also be highlighted in this collection.

2021 was also the first year of a quadrilogy (quartet) where sport and its values will be presented through the coin and medallion collections of the Monnaie de Paris.

To mark the countdown to the launch of the Games, Monnaie de Paris will strike from 2021 and for 4 years a commemorative €2 coin highlighting the Olympic Games through French numismatic figures.

The Coins:

After Marianne (2021) and the Genie (2022), this coin presents "La Semeuse" ("The Sower") trying out the sport of boxing which is the theme of the 10€ silver coin - "Hexagonal Semeuse" ("Six-sided Agriculture Sower Coin") and of the 2€ Commemorative Coins.

On the Obverse of the 10 (Euro) Silver Coin is shown "La Semeuse" ("The Sower") wearing boxing gloves and practicing the Sport of Boxing.

At lower left is seen the initials "RF" (standing for "Republique Francaise" - Republic of France). At centre right is seen the Olympic Flame/torch together with "PARIS 2024" and the (five Olympic Rings representing the five continents).

In the background, is a view of the "Pont Neuf" considered to be the oldest of the stone bridges in Paris, located a few meters from the Monnaie de Paris.

On the Reverse of the 10 (Euro) Silver Coin, the upper part of the Coin is surrounded by the motto of the French Republic: "Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité" and the coins’ denomination of "EURO 10 (Silver), along with a wreath of maple and olive branches within several hexagonal fields.

To the right is the mint mark of the Monnaie de Paris - a Cornucopia ("The Horn of Plenty", with coins falling out of the Horn).

French Facts: Symbols of the Republic:

A legacy of the Age of Enlightenment, the motto "Liberté, Egalité, Fraternité" first appeared during the French Revolution.

Although it was often called into question, it finally established itself under the Third Republic. It was written into the 1958 Constitution and is presently part of the French national heritage.

Linked by François Fénelon at the end of the 17th Century, the notions of "liberty", "equality" and "fraternity" became more widespread during the Age of Enlightenment.

At the time of the French Revolution, "Liberty, Equality, Fraternity" was one of the many mottos in use.

In a 12/1790 speech on the organisation of the National Guards, Maximilien Robespierre advocated that the words "The French People" and "Liberty, Equality, Fraternity" be written on uniforms and flags, but his proposal was rejected.

From 1793 onwards, Parisians, soon to be imitated by the inhabitants of other cities, painted the following words on the façades of their houses: "Unity, indivisibility of the Republic; liberty, equality or death". But they were soon asked to erase the phrase’s final part as it was too closely associated with the Reign of Terror.

This motto fell into disuse under the Empire, like many revolutionary symbols.

It reappeared during the Revolution of 1848 marked with a religious dimension - priests celebrated the "Christ-Fraternité" and blessed the trees of liberty that were planted at the time.

When the Constitution of 1848 was drafted, the motto "Liberty, Equality, Fraternity" was defined as a "principle" of the Republic.

Discarded under the Second Empire, this motto finally established itself under the Third Republic.

This motto was inscribed again on the pediments of public buildings on the occasion of the celebration of 14.07.1880

It appears in the constitutions of 1946 and 1958 and is today an integral part of French national heritage. It is found on items used by the general public such as coins and postage stamps.
