About Europa 2022 - Stamps:

EUROPA Stamps are special stamps issued by European postal administrations.

They bear the official EUROPA logo, a PostEurop registered trademark under the aegis of PostEurop in which Europe is the central theme.

EUROPA stamp issues are among the most collected and most popular stamps in the world and have been issued for over 60 years.

Every year a new theme is assigned by PostEurop and all participating countries issue stamps with their own interpretation of the theme. The theme for 2022 is "Stories and Myths"

More about EUROPA Postage Stamps:

EUROPA Postage stamps (also known as Europa - CEPT - European Conference of Postal and Telecommunications Administrations - until 1992) are special stamps issued by European Postal Administrations/Enterprises and bears the official EUROPA logo, a PostEurop registered trademark under the aegis of PostEurop in which Europe is the central theme.

EUROPA stamps underline cooperation in the posts domain, aimed at promotion of philately. They also build awareness of the common roots, culture and history of Europe and its common goals.

As such, EUROPA stamp issues are among the most collected and most popular stamps in the world.

Since the first issue in 1956, EUROPA stamps have been a tangible symbol of Europe's desire for closer integration and co-operation.

In 1993, PostEurop became responsible for issuing EUROPA stamps.

When CEPT decided to focus more on telecommunications in 1993, PostEurop took over the management of the Europa issues. The CEPT logo was replaced by a new logo created by PostEurop i.e. the word "EUROPA" leaning towards the right hand side.

Each year, PostEurop's "Stamps & Philately Group" selects the EUROPA stamp theme:

About Europa 2022 - "Stories and Myths" Stamp  issued by  La Poste France (French Post):

PostEurop stamp theme for 2022 is "Stories and Myths".

The EUROPA Stamp issued by La Poste France (French Post) features the legend of the Melusine (a legendary creature represented in the form of a mermaid, a reptile from the hips, or a dragon):

La Poste France (French Post)  has issued on 09.05.2022, EUROPA stamps depicting the "Legend of "Melusine".

The Legend/Myths - Background:

Melusine is a legendary creature represented in the form of a mermaid, a reptile from the hips, or a dragon.

Coming from chivalrous stories and medieval tales, she becomes a river nymph, living in a water hole, a fairy nestled at the bottom of a cave, even a wyvern in the hollow of a moor.

She is called "Merluisaine" in Champagne, "Mother Louise" in Burgundy, "Merlusse" in the Vosges, and she still bears many names in various provinces of France.

Beneficent, she watches over the home and the crops. Maleficent, she sows the plague.

One of the oldest evocations of Mélusine is found in the "Tales for Court People" dating from the 12th century.

The fairy also appears in "Henno cum dentibus", a fabliau written between 1188 and 1193 by a cleric who lived at the English court.

It recounts the meeting of the valiant Henno-aux-Grandes-Dents with a beautiful woman in tears, adorned with gold and diamonds, victim of a shipwreck.

The young lord is thinking of taking her as his wife when he discovers her secret: Mélusine turns into a terrible creature when she bathes.

It is found in "Les Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry" with illuminations painted around 1411

For his part, the Sieur de Couldrette wrote the "Roman de Mélusine" at the end of the 14th century, which was very popular.

It was translated into English, German and Flemish over the next century.

Closer to home, the poet Émile Verhaeren (1855-1916) evoked the fairy in "Le chant de l’eau".

Presently, Mélusine has become a likeable comic book heroine. This young lady – who is only 119 years old! – lives in Transylvania in the castle of a vampire.

Her exploits are inspired by those of Harry Potter at the school of wizards, because, like him, she learns magic.
