About Europa 2022 - Stamps:

EUROPA Stamps are special stamps issued by European postal administrations.

They bear the official EUROPA logo, a PostEurop registered trademark under the aegis of PostEurop in which Europe is the central theme.

EUROPA stamp issues are among the most collected and most popular stamps in the world and have been issued for over 60 years.

Every year a new theme is assigned by PostEurop and all participating countries issue stamps with their own interpretation of the theme. The theme for 2022 is "Stories and Myths"

More about EUROPA Postage Stamps:

EUROPA Postage stamps (also known as Europa - CEPT - European Conference of Postal and Telecommunications Administrations - until 1992) are special stamps issued by European Postal Administrations/Enterprises and bears the official EUROPA logo, a PostEurop registered trademark under the aegis of PostEurop in which Europe is the central theme.

EUROPA stamps underline cooperation in the posts domain, aimed at promotion of philately. They also build awareness of the common roots, culture and history of Europe and its common goals.

As such, EUROPA stamp issues are among the most collected and most popular stamps in the world.

Since the first issue in 1956, EUROPA stamps have been a tangible symbol of Europe's desire for closer integration and co-operation.

In 1993, PostEurop became responsible for issuing EUROPA stamps.

When CEPT decided to focus more on telecommunications in 1993, PostEurop took over the management of the Europa issues. The CEPT logo was replaced by a new logo created by PostEurop i.e. the word "EUROPA" leaning towards the right hand side.

Each year, PostEurop's "Stamps & Philately Group" selects the EUROPA stamp theme:

The EUROPA Stamp issued by Republic of Srpska (Poste Srpske, Banja Luka) features "The Legend of the Screamer (Drekavac) and The Legend of the Bogeyman":

Republic of Srpska (Poste Srpske, Banja Luka)  has issued on 11.05.2022, EUROPA stamps depicting the "Legend of The Screamer and The Legend of the Bogeyman".

The Legend/Myths - Background:

Every nation has its own beliefs and myths that have been passed down from generation to generation for centuries.

It is no different with the people from Republic of Srpska (Bosnia and Herzegovina), who, in addition to the myths of death, life and love, seem to have believed a lot in supernatural, evil creatures that are still talked about with an element of fear.

Myths are stories that people tell to explain events in nature or history.

The mythology of the Slavic peoples, including the Serbs, is very vivid and colorful.

The Legend of the Screamer (Drekavac):

The postage Stamp of 2.70 BAM depicts the Screamer (Drekavac).

There is no one who has not heard of fairies, howlers, vampires, different types of ghosts, but also the famous Bogeyman… The Screamer (Drekavac) is a creature from the mythology of the South Slavs. The belief is spread throughout Serbia, Bosnia and Montenegro.

According to the legend, the Screamer is a material manifestation of a dead, unbaptized man (according to some stories, a young boy) who cannot find peace, so he persecutes those who have sinned in his life. The Screamer is said to be a small, hairy creature, with long and sharp claws on its toes and a large head on a thin neck.

It is believed that there are frightening cries (similar to a child's cry, a wolf's howl, a goat's moan, a cat's meow or a bird's cry) with which it can deafen a person.

According to the myth, the Screamer attacks people who find themselves late at night near a cemetery, river, lake or forest by jumping on their backs and forcing them to walk all night.

If the victim does not obey the demands of the Screamer, the victim will be scratched and torn by the huge claws of this mythical creature.

It was believed that it could not be destroyed until it found peace.

The Legend of the Bogeyman:

The Postage Stamp of 1.95 BAM depicts the Bogeyman

Bogeyman is also a creature from the mythology of the South Slavs. Little children were afraid of her.

Bogeyman is often confused with a witch, although they are different mythological creatures.

In folklore, she is described exclusively as a terrifying female being in the form of a hunched, ugly, toothless old woman with a horrible face and a horn on her head (after whom she got her name).

It hides in dark places and only goes out at night. According to folklore, Bogeyman scares and kidnaps naughty children and takes them to her lair…
