EUROPA stamps underline cooperation in the posts domain, aimed at promotion of philately. They also build awareness of the common roots, culture and history of Europe and its common goals.
As such, EUROPA stamp issues are among the most collected and most popular stamps in the world.
Since the first issue in 1956, EUROPA stamps have been a tangible symbol of Europe's desire for closer integration and co-operation.
In 1993, PostEurop became responsible for issuing EUROPA stamps.
When CEPT decided to focus more on telecommunications in 1993, PostEurop took over the management of the Europa issues. The CEPT logo was replaced by a new logo created by PostEurop i.e. the word "EUROPA" leaning towards the right hand side.

About Europa 2022 - "Stories and Myths" Stamp issued by La Poste de Monaco (Monaco Post):
PostEurop stamp theme for 2022 is "Stories and Myths".
The EUROPA Stamp issued by La Poste de Monaco (Monaco Post) features the legend of the Francois Grimaldi (known as "Malizia" or the "Malacious"):
La Poste de Monaco (Monaco Post) has issued on 09.05.2022, EUROPA stamps depicting the "Legend of Francois Grimaldi (known as "Malizia" - or the "Malacious")".
The Legend/Myths - Background:
To illustrate this year's theme, centered on Myths and Stories, the Office des Timbres de Monaco has chosen to represent "François Grimaldi", (known as "Malizia" or the "malacious"), who was the Genoese leader of the Guelphs who, on the night of 08.01.1297, disguised as a Franciscan monk, took over/tricked the fortress of Monaco to the Ghibellines, thus installing the Grimaldi dynasty.
Dressed as a Franciscan friar, Francesco was greeted at the gates of Monaco's castle, only then to seize the castle with his cousin Rainier I, Lord of Cagnes, and a group of men behind him.
The treachery is commemorated on the Monegasque Coat Of Arms, on which the supporters are two friars armed with swords.
He held the citadel of Monaco for four years before being chased out by the Genoese.
Francesco thus failed to establish Grimaldi's rule over Monaco, but was the first to attempt to do so.
The present rulers of Monaco:
Francesco was married in 1295 to Aurelia del Carretto - the marriage was childless. The modern Grimaldis are therefore not descendants of Francesco. After his death, in 1309, he was succeeded by his cousin (and stepson), Rainier I of Monaco, Lord of Cagnes.
The battle over "the rock" was taken over by his kinsmen.
Over one hundred years after the coup, the Grimaldis purchased Monaco from the crown of Aragon in 1419, and became the official and undisputed rulers of "the Rock of Monaco".
His cousin's descendants, the Grimaldi family, still rule Monaco today.

ReplyDelete"Never knew this part about Monaco's history! Found it a lovely Mediterranean beach lined area to the south of France, with royal Yatchs rolling on the shore and peaceful, happy (read rich as well) folks walking merrily in the beachside, savouring Gellatos and burgers! The shops were all selling Global brands; i had to shell out decent sums for football gear for my Son, who couldn't make the trip as he had his BBA term exams then!"
The Europa stamp series every year takes us on an identified theme and all members have to bring out stamps on that theme. So we had "Ancient postal Routes" in 2020, "Endangered National Wildlife" in 2021. These stamps take us on a virtual tour of Europe on that particular theme. I knew that Monaco was purchased by the rulers from some large kingdom, but now I have a clear idea of its history.
