The Fabrica Nacional Moneda y Timbre (FNMT), Real Casa de Moneda has released on 30.03.2023 the second “BULLion” Gold Coin, which depicts one of Spain’s most recognisable animals, the Bull.

The programme began in late 2021 with an Iberian Lynx (1-ounce gold €1.5 coin) and continued in 2022 with a tenth-ounce version, also featuring a lynx. 

In 2022, Spain issued a Bull 1-ounce gold coin, the motif that is now being used for a fractional version.

The aim of these coins is to project the image of Spain and the Spanish culture, with the choice of animals representative of Spain on the reverse.

Last year’s coin depicted the quintessential symbol of Spanish heritage, the fighting bull (or "El Toro Bravo"), a type of steer found in the Iberian Peninsula.

Sacred bulls have held a place of significance in human culture since before the beginning of recorded history. 

They appear in cave paintings estimated to be up to 17,000 years old. 

The mythic Bull of Heavens plays a role in the ancient Sumerian Epic of Gilgamesh, dating as far back as 2150 BC. 

The importance of the bull is reflected in its appearance in the Zodiac as Taurus, and its numerous appearances in mythology, where it is often associated with fertility. 

In Hinduism, a bull named Nandi, usually depicted seated, is worshipped as the vehicle of the god Shiva and depicted on many of the images of that deity.

Symbolically, the bull appears commonly in heraldry. Bulls appears as charges and crests on the arms of several British families.

In modern times, the bull is used as a mascot by both amateur and professional sports teams.

Bulls also have a special significance in Spanish culture, where the "Running of the Bulls" celebration occurs every year in summer. 

During this festival, a group of human runners called "mozos" try to outrace a group of bulls running behind them, while large crowds watch the entire race.

The Gold Coin:

For the 2023-dated fractional coins, last year’s design has been re-created on the Reverse, which depicts "El Toro Bravo", as it might be seen while entering the bull ring. 

On the Reverse of the 15 Euro Cent or €1.50 (Euro) Gold Coin above the primary design is the coin’s denomination of "15 EURO CENT", and to the centre left of the value is a "crowned M" (mintmark of the Real Casa de la Moneda) and the year of issue, "2023". 

To the lower-right along the periphery is the text "TORO". 

On the Obverse of the 15 Euro Cent or €1.50 (Euro) Gold Coin is depicted the classic motif of the "Columnario", (a symbol of the historic Spanish "Pillar Dollar Silver Coins once recognised worldwide as the primary coin of international trade). 

The crest depicts two hemispheres under a royal crown, flanked by the Pillars of Hercules with the motto "PLUS VLTRA" (meaning “further beyond”), above a sea of waves. 

The inscription seen to the left and right peripheries reads "FELIPE VI REY DE ESPANA" (meaning "Philip VI, King of Spain"), along with the specifications "1/10 ONZA 999,9 ORO" (meaning "1/10 Oz .9999 Fineness Gold") seen below the crest at the bottom. 

All these Bullion Coins have been struck in Reverse Proof quality, with the background shown in matte and the engraved relief with a polished mirror effect.
