Spain is the source of so much numismatic treasure in the past, has now joined the list of nations issuing their own gold bullion coins.

The country has entered the Gold Bullion market with a new Gold Coin featuring the "Iberian Lynx" which was released on 01.12.2021 by The Fabrica Nacional Moneda y Timbre (FNMT), Real Casa de Moneda (The Spanish Mint). 

This was the first Coin issued in a new series of gold bullion coins titled "Spain and Spanish Culture through its animals". Each Coin is of the denomination of 15 Euro Cents or €1.5 (Euro). 

The programme began in late 2021 with an Iberian Lynx (1-ounce gold €1.5 coin) and continued in 2022 with a tenth-ounce version, also featuring a lynx. 

In 2022, Spain issued a Bull 1-ounce gold coin, the motif that is now being used for a fractional version.

The aim of these coins is to project the image of Spain and the Spanish culture, with the choice of animals representative of Spain on the reverse.

The Iberian lynx (Lynx pardinus) is a wild cat species endemic to the Iberian Peninsula in southwestern Europe. It is listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List.

In the 20th century, the Iberian lynx population had declined because of overhunting, poaching, fragmentation of suitable habitats, and the population decline of its main prey species, the European rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus), caused by myxomatosis and rabbit haemorrhagic disease.

By the turn of the 21st century, the Iberian lynx was on the verge of extinction, as only 94 individuals survived in two isolated subpopulations in Andalusia in 2002. 

Conservation measures have been implemented since then, which included improving habitat, restocking of rabbits, translocating, reintroducing and monitoring Iberian lynxes. 

By 2012, the population had increased to 326 individuals, to 855 in 2020, and to over 1,111 in 2021.

It is a monotypic species, and is thought to have evolved from Lynx issiodorensis.

The Gold Coin:

On the Reverse of the 15 Euro Cent or €1.50 (Euro) Gold Coin above the primary design is the coin’s denomination of "15 EURO CENT", and to the centre left of the value is a "crowned M" (mintmark of the Real Casa de la Moneda) and the year of issue, "2021". 

To the lower-right along the periphery is the text "LINCE" (meaning "Lynx"). 

On the Obverse of the 15 Euro Cent or €1.50 (Euro) Gold Coin is depicted the classic motif of the "Columnario", (a symbol of the historic Spanish "Pillar Dollar Silver Coins once recognised worldwide as the primary coin of international trade). 

The crest depicts two hemispheres under a royal crown, flanked by the Pillars of Hercules with the motto "PLUS VLTRA" (meaning “further beyond”), above a sea of waves. 

The inscription seen to the left and right peripheries reads "FELIPE VI REY DE ESPANA" (meaning "Philip VI, King of Spain"), along with the specifications "1 ONZA 999,9 ORO" (meaning "1.00 Oz .9999 Fineness Gold") seen below the crest at the bottom. 

The Coin’s Obverse features imagery borrowed from the famous Spanish Silver “Piece of Eight” Coin, which circulated around the globe for more than two centuries.

All these Bullion Coins have been struck in Reverse Proof quality, with the background shown in matte and the engraved relief with a polished mirror effect.
