3989) Embroidered Flowers, Republic of France (Francaise Republique): La Poste France (French Post) has issued a Stamp Booklet of 12 Stamps illustrated with trompe-l'oeil embroidered flowers: Date/Year of stamp Booklet issue: 10.06.2025:
About Embroidered Flowers:
On June 10, 2025, La Poste, France (French Post) has issued a booklet of twelve postage stamps, illustrated with "trompe-l'oeil embroidered flowers" (French for 'deceive the eye' is an artistic term for the highly realistic optical illusion of three-dimensional space and objects on a two-dimensional surface)..
The embroidered flower stamps are inspired by the work of embroiderer Ugo Lo Monaco, winner of the gold medal at the 1937 International Exhibition of Arts and Techniques in Paris.
In this series, his grandson, Gérard Lo Monaco, a designer and illustrator, reinterprets the embroidery motifs based on twelve preserved compositions from his archives. Through the use of color, he offers an artistic perspective on this expertise of French haute couture.
About Gerald Lo Monaco:
Gérard Lo Monaco is a paper engineer and visual artist known for his pop-up books and intricate paper sculptures. While he's not directly associated with the creation of embroidery frames, his work often involves similar techniques of manipulating and assembling layers of paper, similar to how an embroidery frame holds fabric taut.
Embroidery Frames:
These are tools used to hold fabric taut during embroidery, allowing for precise stitching. They typically consist of two concentric rings that clamp the fabric between them.
Gérard Lo Monaco's Work:
He creates intricate pop-up books and paper sculptures, often involving multiple layers of paper that are carefully assembled and folded.
Similarities:
While the materials and end results differ, both involve manipulating and holding materials (fabric for embroidery, paper for Lo Monaco's art) in a controlled way to achieve a desired outcome. The process of securing fabric in an embroidery frame can be seen as analogous to the way Lo Monaco uses layers of paper in his art.
In essence, while Lo Monaco doesn't design or use embroidery frames, his work shares a conceptual similarity with the way frames are used to hold fabric in place for detailed work.
