294) “India-UN Women HeForShe Programme”: Commemorative Postage stamps in the denominations of Rs. 25/- and Rs.5/- issued by the Department of Posts, India on 08.03.2016:

The Initiative:

The UN Women is the UN Organisation dedicated to gender equality and the empowerment of women. A global champion for women and girls, UN Women was established to accelerate progress on meeting their needs worldwide.

Launched on 20.09.2014, the HeForShe Solidarity Movement was created by the UN Women, the United Nations entity for gender equality and the empowerment of women.

The Programme provides a systematic approach and targeted platform on which men and boys will be engaged to become change agents towards the achievement of gender equality and women’s rights by encouraging them to take action against inequalities faced by women and girls.

Achieving gender equality in our lifetimes requires an innovative, inclusive approach that recognises men and boys as partners for women’s rights and acknowledges the ways in which they also benefit from this equality.

HeForShe invites men and boys to build on the work of the Women’s Movement as equal partners, crafting and implementing a shared vision of gender equality that will benefit all of humanity.

Since the launch of the programme was launched at the United Nations by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and UN Women Global Goodwill Ambassador, Emma Watson (Female lead in the “Harry Potter Series of Films”), Kiefer Sutherland (the popular TV Series “24”), Barak Obama (POTUS), Matt Damon (Popular Hollywood Actor) and hundreds of thousands of men, including me, from around the Globe, including Heads of States and global luminaries from all walks of life have committed to gender equality.

The ambitious aim of this movement is to mobilize more than 1 billion men and boys to accelerate the achievement of gender equality.

The Mission of the HeForShe Programme:

“The World is at a turning point. People everywhere understand and support the idea of gender equality. They know it’s not just a women’s issue, it’s a human rights issue. And when these powerful voices are heard, they will change the world. The time for that change is now. HeForShe is inviting people around the world to stand together to create a bold, visible force for gender equality. And it starts by taking action right now to create a gender equal world”.

Upon joining the initiative:

The HeForShe journey begins online with a simple affirmation that gender equality is not only a women’s issue, but a human rights issue that requires the participation and commitment of men.

HeForShe then moves beyond awareness to action, asking men to define what matters to them and what they will/can do to make a difference.

Men play a critical role in supporting and enabling woman’s economic empowerment. HeForShe engages CEOs and other leaders as champions for gender equality within their own Organisations, encouraging them to question the status quo and commit to concrete action.

On an individual level, HeForShe engages men to examine how their own personal and professional lives can better recognise, reduce and redistribute care and responsibilities between the Market and the State, between the Household and the Workplace and between women and men.

The International community has recognised that women’s participation is vital to achieving and sustaining peace.

Women are proven agents of change and should be able to do even more. HeForShe provides an opportunity to rebalance the representation of men and women in the peace process by engaging both sides of the table, empowering female leaders and working with men as advocates for change.

Where men have prioritised gender equality, great results have followed. HeForShe engages male political leaders as catalysts for change across both public and private spheres and provides targeted support to male leaders eager to engage in this initiative/work.

Ending gender-based violence requires a comprehensive approach that engages every segment of Society. HeForShe provides a platform through which, first and foremost, men and boys can prevent violence by observing and evolving their own attitudes, values and behaviour towards women and girls, ensuring that they do not personally engage in discrimination or violence. In cases where violence has already been perpetrated, men can, through HeForShe seek support to change their behaviour, breaking the cycle of violence. An individual can inspire broader change by proactively intervening where one come across discrimination or violence.

IMPACT 10x10x10 initiative:

UN Women launched the HeForShe IMPACT 10x10x10 initiative to gain further momentum in advancing gender equality and women’s empowerment at the 2015 World economic Forum in Davos on 23.01.2015.

The initiative was launched as a one-year pilot programme to engage governments, corporations and universities as instruments of change. The programme targeted some of the communities that most needed to address women’s empowerment and gender equality concerns and those that have the greatest capacity to make and influence those changes.

While thousands have committed to this initiative, the impact has so far been short of satisfactory.

Using the Social Media:

HeForShe uses innovative online, offline and mobile phone technology to identify and activate men in every city, community and village around the World. HeForShe has been the subject of more than 1.3 to 1.5 billion conversations on the social media, with off-line activities reaching every corner of the Planet.

How can one join the initiative & contribute to the programme?

One can join the initiative by clicking on the following link: http://www.heforshe.org/en#take-action

The numbers who have joined so far:

In India alone, about 100,000 men have already committed to the initiative. I have been allotted the enrolment number: 768194 in a World-wide Serial registration (a map which is a geo-locator records global engagement in the campaign), The campaign had targeted to get one million men and boys to enrol in their initiative by June 2015, Considering that I have been allotted the number given above in March 2016, it would seem that, either the goal was somewhat ambitious or very few men & boys believe in gender equality or apart from the “social media conversations”, the initiative has not yet reached the masses, where it is targeted to make an impact .

The top five countries where men have joined the initiative are USA, Mexico, United Kingdom, Ecuador and Canada. In other words, very few persons from the majority of the countries have committed to the programme.

The official materials for organising an event/awareness programme:

There are official HeForShe materials for organising local level events, commitment drives or social media campaigns (individual action kits) Playbook and materials to get business, academic, governmental or non-governmental organisations involved (workplace action kits) and getting official HeForShe materials for organising campus events, commitment drives or social media campaigns (student action kits) which are easily downloadable from the on the HeForShe website.

How many events/awareness programmes have been conducted so far globally:

Only about 1,00,000 events have been organised to educate the public about the focus of this initiative.

"The issue of postal stamps depicting 'gender-equality' concept is a novel idea for which Postal authorities should be 'thanked'!"

    1. Very true, Lalingkar sahab. There is a set of 6 stamps which is being sold by the UN Women to generate awareness about this programme/Movement. The use of these postage stamps India-wide will generate a lot of awareness about this programme, which has met with little success because people across the globe are not aware of it. The unique thing about this programme is that it also includes offenders who have indulged in violence against women and have been convicted for it, in the hope that one day the person would reform himself. Indiapost has also brought out a set of four stamps titled "Women's Empowerment" last year in furtherance of this programme.

    1. Hi,Perhaps you meant "we have to remove gender inequality". There seems to be a typo error in the term "gender (in)equality" in your comment. Much appreciate your sentiment and views.
