"Nang Yai" (or "Shadow Play Puppets"): International Letter Writing Week – 2008: Commemorative
Stamps issued by Thailand Post on 04.10.2008:
Shadow Play or Shadow Puppetry
is an ancient form of story-telling and entertainment which uses flat
articulated figures (Shadow Puppets) to create cut-out figures which are held
between a light source and a translucent screen or scrim. The cut-out shapes of
the puppets can include translucent colour or other types of detailing.
Various effects can be
achieved by moving puppets as well as the light source.
An accomplished puppeteer
can make the figures appear to walk, dance, fight, nod and even laugh.
The Shadow Play in one of
the most ancient forms of cultural entertainment and dates back to around 1500
BC.
Interestingly, Alexander
the Great (356 – 323 BC), is said to have celebrated his victory over Egypt and
proclaimed his authority and power by having a Shadow Play performed. In the
present day, the Shadow Play in Thailand has undergone tremendous changes,
however, some major characters still feature in the performances.
Apart from Thailand,
Shadow Play is popular in various cultures, and is performed in at least 20
countries by Shadow troupes.
Shadow Play is an ancient
traditional art having a long history in Asia – China, India, Nepal, Cambodia,
Indonesia, Malaysia, Taiwan, and Thailand – as well in European countries –
Turkey, Greece, France, etc – and in Australia.
“Nang Yai” (meaning “Large Shadow
Play”) of Thailand:
The form of Shadow Play
adapted in Thailand uses puppets made of buffalo hide, while the story is
narrated by songs, chants and music.
“Nang Yai” literally means
“skin or hide” or a “large drama or shadow puppet” which can weigh about three
or four kilograms, while the biggest puppets can weigh as much as five to seven
kilograms.
Nang Yai performances were
a popular means of entertainment during the early settlements of the Ayutthaya
Kingdom of Siam – present day Thailand. There is a mention of these
performances in a poem called “Bunnovat
Khamchan” written by the Buddhist monk “Mahanaag”
(literally “the Great Serpent” of wisdom) sometime around 1758 to 1751 BC
towards the end of King Boromakot’s reign.
The
actual performances:
It is a kind of modern
mask dance and incorporates various episodes of the Indian epic “Ramayana”
(called “Ramakien’ in Thai). “Nang Yai” performances adapt Ramayana
stories as the main lead and the performance is episodic in each show.
The performance of a large
Shadow puppet is traditionally held in open spaces like a village field or lawn
etc where a large white screen is set up held by four bamboo or wooden poles on
each side. The screen is lined with a red strip. Behind the screen strands, a
tinder or a bonfire is lit up to reflect the shadows of the puppets. During the
course of the show there is a Thai music band playing music to highlight each
episode of the performance.
Nang Yai performances are
seen all over Thailand – present day – and are as popular as ever.
Also important in each
shadow is a dubber, which tradition has been incorporated in film dubbing as
well.
The
following four stamps issued by Thailand Post on 04.10.2008, all in the
denominations of 3 Baht each, recreate some of the important characters/imagery
which is associated with the Art of Shadow Play:
The Miniature sheet containing the Four stamps of three Baht denomination each and depicting the Rishi, Shiva, the “Shadow Play
Preluder” and "Theng" the jester. On the extension of the Miniature sheet one can see the puppeteer making the figures come to life on the screen
The four stamps together
The Rishi Puppet is
considered to be the Master of the performance. Each of his movements lends an
atmosphere of solemnity to the performance and his style is serious and
dignified. The name of this character “Rishi” is mentioned on the top right
corner of the stamp. On the right periphery is mentioned “INTERNATIONAL LETTER
WRITING WEEK”. The name of the issuing country “THAILAND” is at the bottom
spelt in both Thai language and English
The Puppet of the God Shiva
comes next to the Rishi Puppet. This character is referred to as the Bull as
the puppet is carved into the image of the Hindu God of Destruction – Shiva
riding on the Usupharaj Bull (in India the Bull is referred to as “Nandi”). The
name of this puppet “Shiva” is mentioned on the top right corner of the stamp.
On the right periphery is mentioned “INTERNATIONAL LETTER WRITING WEEK”. The
name of the issuing country “THAILAND” is at the bottom spelt in both Thai
language and English
The manipulation of this puppet demands more
artistic skills from the performer than do the other figures. For this reason,
the performer displays his best skills in controlling this character.
The “Prai Na Bot” is a
puppet indicating the character of a young man carrying a flag or a lotus
flower in his left hand. In his right hand he has a bamboo stick. The name of this character “Shadow Play
Preluder” is mentioned on the top right corner of the stamp. On the right
periphery is mentioned “INTERNATIONAL LETTER WRITING WEEK”. The name of the
issuing country “THAILAND” is at the bottom spelt in both Thai language and
English
He represents
the performer himself, who recites the invocation and gives comments on several
situations and issues to the audience.
The stamp representing
this puppet is titled “Theng” the Jester. His role is to provide a comic relief
during the performances. The name of this character is mentioned on the top
right corner of the stamp. On the right periphery is mentioned “INTERNATIONAL
LETTER WRITING WEEK”. The name of the issuing country “THAILAND” is at the
bottom spelt in both Thai language and English

DeleteBeautiful stamps, I may be asking for too much, but these would have been priceless, if the stamps could have been perforated and actually used to create shadows! Maybe an idea Bhutan stamp makers can borrow this thought
ReplyDeleteYes, that is a suggestion worth considering. I'm sure, Thailand post would have designers who could do just that & give us innovatively made stamps.
