International Bio-Diversity Decade 2011-2020:

“Bio-diversity is important at every level. We live in a complex system where every living being depends on every other in some or the other way. It is important that we actively pursue a clear and current understanding of the system in which we live, in order to sustain it.”

Mammals: The Mammals are a class of vertebrate animals characterised by the presence of mammary glands, the presence of hair or fur, specialised teeth, the presence of a neo-cortex region in the brain and endothermic or “warm-blooded” bodies.

The brain regulates endothermic and circulatory system, including a four-chambered heart.

In India, there are 410 species, 168 genera, 45 families and 13 orders of which nearly 89 species are listed as “Threatened” in the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN 2006).

Bovidae:

The Bovidae are the biological family of cloven-hoofed, ruminant mammals that includes bison, African buffalo, water buffalo, antelopes, gazelles, sheep, goats, muskoxen, and domestic cattle. A member of this family is called a bovid.

The biological subfamily Bovinae includes a diverse group of 10 genera of medium to large-sized ungulates, including domestic cattle, bison, African buffalo, the water buffalo, the yak, and the four-horned and spiral-horned antelopes.

Yak (Bo Mutus):

This is a long-haired bovid found throughout the Himalayan Region of Southern Central Asia, the Tibetan Plateau and as far North as Mongolia and Russia.

Wild yaks are among the largest bovids and are second only to the Gaur (the Indian bison) in shoulder height. They are also the largest native animals in their range. Wild yaks are found primarily in Northern Tibet and Western Qinghai. With some populations extending into the Southernmost parts of Xinjiang and into Ladakh in India.

IUCN Status: Vulnerable (VU)

“Bharal” or Himalayan Blue Sheep (Pseudois nayaur):

The Bharal is a caprid found in the high Himalayas of India, Nepal, Bhutan, Tibet and Pakistan. Bharal are active throughout the day, alternating between feeding and resting on the grassy mountain slopes. Due to their excellent camouflage and the absence of cover in their environment, bharal remain motionless when approached. Once they have been noticed, however, they scamper up to the precipitous cliffs, where they once again freeze, using camouflage to blend into the rock face.

Bharal are mainly grazers, but during times of scarcity of grass, they switch to herbs and shrubs.

IUCN Status: Least Concern (LC)

“Chousingha” of “Four Horned Antelope” (Tetracerus quadricornis):

This is a species of small antelope found in open forest in India and Nepal. Standing only 55 to 64 cm (or 22 to 25 inches) at the shoulder, it is the smallest of Asian bovids. Males of the species are unique among extant mammals in that they possess four permanent horns. Four-horned antelope live in a variety of habitats across their range, but prefer open, dry, deciduous forests in hilly terrain. They generally stay away from human-inhabited areas.

IUCN Status: Vulnerable (VU)

“Gaur” or the “Indian Bison” (Bos gaurus):

This is the largest extant bovine, native to South Asia and South-east Asia.

Gaur are largely confined to evergreen forests or semi-evergreen and moist deciduous forests, but also occur in deciduous forest areas at the periphery of their range. Gaur habitat is characterised by large, relatively undisturbed forest tracts, hilly terrain below an altitude of forage in the form of grasses, bamboo, shrubs and trees.

IUCN Status: Vulnerable (VU)

Siberian Ibex (Capra sibirica):

They are seen in Central Asia and Western Himalayas in India. They are large and heavily built goats.

Usually living at high elevations, sometimes at the vegetation line and well above the tree line, Siberian ibexes seek out lower slopes during the winter in search of food. They have also been known to seek out tree lines on hot days, but they do not enter forested areas, preferring to return to their alpine habitat when the weather has cooled. When snow is heavy, they have to paw away snow to reach the vegetation below.

IUCN Status: Least Concern (LC)

“Hangul” or the “Kashmir Stag” (Cervus Canadensis hanglu):

This deer is native to India. They live in groups of two to eighteen individuals in dense riverine forests, high valleys and mountains of the Kashmir valley and Northern Chamba in Himachal Pradesh.

Less than 200 individuals exist. There are steps in place to breed them in captivity to increase their numbers and chances of survival.

IUCN Status: Critically Endangered (CR)

“Sambhar” (Rusa unicolor):

This is a large deer native to the Indian subcontinent. Sambhar are found in habitats ranging from tropical dry forests, tropical seasonal forests, subtropical mixed forests (conifers, broadleaf deciduous and broadleaf evergreen tree species) to tropical rainforests. They are seldom found far from water.

They are hardy animals, ranging from sea level up to 3,500 metres (or 11,500 feet) in the foothills of the Himalayas.

IUCN Status: Vulnerable (VU)

“Sangai” (Rucervus eldii eldii):

The Sangai is an endemic, rare and endangered sub-species of brow-antlered deer found only in Manipur, India. It is also the state animal of Manipur. Its common English name is Manipur brow-antlered deer.

Its habitat is located in the Southern parts of the Loktak Lake, which is the largest freshwater lake in Eastern India.

It is a medium-sized deer, with uniquely distinctive antlers, measuring 100-110 cms, in length with extremely long brow tine. The Sangai has a maximum lifespan of about 10 years in the wild.

IUCN Status: Endangered (EN)

Indian Hog Deer (Hylephus porcinus):

This is a small deer whose habitat ranges from Pakistan, through Northern India, to mainland South-east Asia. It gets its name from the hog-like manner in which it runs through the forests with its head hung low so that it can duck under obstacles instead of leaping over them like most other deer.

A mature hog deer stag stands about 70 cm at the shoulder and weighs 50 kg (approx) while hinds are much smaller, standing about 61 cm and weighing around 30 kg.

IUCN Status: Endangered (EN)

Ladakh Urial (Ovis orientalis vignei):

They are also known as the “Shapo” and are a subspecies of wild sheep Ovis orientalis.

It is found in Western Central Asia from North-eastern Iran and Western Kazakhstan to Pakistan’s Balochistan and Ladakh regions of Northern India. Its habitat consists of grassy slopes below the timberline.

Urials rarely move to the rocky areas of the mountains. They feed mainly on grass but are able to eat leaves of trees and bushes if needed.

IUCN Status: Vulnerable (VU)

Himalayan Serow (Capricornis thar):

This is a goat-antelope with a goat-like body, short limbs and long donkey-like ears. It is wide-spread but sparsely distributed throughout the forested Southern slopes of the Himalayas in Northern India – from Jammu & Kashmir to the Mishmi Hills in Arunachal Pradesh and in the hill states of North-eastern India.

The Himalayan Serow is more or less a solitary creature, though four or five individuals may be seen feeding on the same hill. The Serow shelters in thickly wooded gorges and shallow caves and comes out to feed in the mornings and evenings on open slopes.

IUCN Status: Near Threatened (NT)

Leaf Muntjac or Leaf Deer or Putao Muntjac (Muntiacus putaoensis):

This is a small species of muntjac. Its existence in India was first reported from Lohit district in Eastern Arunachal Pradesh.

In 2002, it was reported also to exist in Namdapha Tiger Reserve, in Eastern Arunachal Pradesh and later near Noklak in Nagaland. It is found at an altitude of 450 to 600 metres – the transition zone between tropical forests and temperate ones. An adult leaf deer stands at just 20 inches (50 cm) high at the shoulder and weighs less than 25 pounds (11 kg)>

IUCN Status: Data Deficient (DD)

“Mouse Deer” or Indian Spotted Chevrotain (Moschiola indica):

This is a species of even-toed ungulate in the family Tragulidae found in India and possibly Nepal. It has a body length of 23 inches (57.5 cm), with a tail length of 1 inch (2.5 cm). It weighs around 7 lb (or 3 kg) and lives in rainforests and is nocturnal.

IUCN Status: Least Concern (LC)

“Chital” or Spotted Deer (Axis axis):

This deer commonly inhabits the wooded regions of India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan and in small numbers in Pakistan. It is the most common deer species in Indian forests. The Chital’s coat is pinkish fawn, marked with white spots, and its underparts are also white, its antlers, which it sheds annually are usually three-pronged and curve in a lyre shape and may extend to 75 cm (or 2.5 feet). Their life-spans are around 8-14 years.

IUCN Status: Least Concern (LC)

“Barking Deer” or the Indian Muntiac (Muntiacus muntjak):

It has a soft, short, brownish or greyish hair, sometimes with creamy markings. This species is omnivorous, feeding on grass fruits, shoots, seeds, birds’ eggs, as well as, small animals.

It sometimes displays even scavenging behaviour, feeding on carrion. It gives calls similar to banking, usually upon sensing a predator. The Indian Muntiac is found in tropical and sub-tropical deciduous forests, grasslands, savannas and scrub forests, as well as, in the hilly country on the slopes of the Himalayas.

IUCN Status: Least Concern (LC)

Felicidae: (Family of Cats):

Caracal (Caracal caracal):

This is a medium sized wild cat that is around one metre long (3.30 feet). The caracal is native to Africa, Central Asia, South-west Asia and India. The caracal is often referred to as the desert lynx, although the black tufts are the only characteristic shared with the lynx.

Caracals are nocturnal hunters. It inhabits woodlands, savannas, semi-deserts and scrub forests and prefers arid habitats with lower rainfall and some coverage.

IUCN Status: Least Concern (LC)
