About
François Auguste Rodin (12.11.1840- 17.11.1917):
He is considered to be the
progenitor of modern sculpture. Although, he was schooled traditionally and
took a craftsman-like approach to his work and strived to achieve academic
recognition, he was never accepted into Paris’s foremost School of art.
Sculpturally, he possessed
a unique ability to model a complex, turbulent, deep pocketed surface in clay.
Many of his notable
sculptures were criticised during his lifetime as they clashed with predominant
figurative sculpture traditions, in which works were decorative, formulaic or
highly thematic.
Rodin’s most original work
departed from traditional themes of mythology and allegory, modelled the human
body with realism and celebrated individual character and physicality. Although
sensitive to the criticism faced by his works, he continued to work in his own
style. Successive works brought him increasing favour with the government and
the Artistic community.
His reputation grew and he
became the pre-eminent French sculptor of his time and a world-renowned artist.
