On 25.06.1996, India Post issued a Presentation set of two Stamps which marked the Centenary of the Modern Olympic Games depicting the marble stadium at Athens with an impression of the Parthenon in the background on one stamp and the Olympic torch on the other stamp

             The description card placed with two stamp issue reads:

“OLYMPICS: Spirit of Olympics, Athens, Atlanta – 25.06.1996 – The 1996 Summer Olympics officially known as the Games of the XXVI Olympiad and unofficially as the “Centennial Olympic Games, were held in Atlanta, Georgia, United States, from July 19 to august 4. 1996. These Games celebrated the hundred years of modern Olympic movement rededicating to the ideals of the Olympic movement as set out by Baron Pierre de Coubertin and reflected in the spirit of Olympism namely – “ALTIUS, CITIUS, FORTIUS”. The official mascot was “Izzy” which was the first computer generated mascot.

India Post issued a set of two stamps on 25.06.1996 which marked the centenary of Olympic Games depicting the marble stadium at Athens with an impression on Parthenon in the background on one and an Olympic torch on the other stamp”.

Also seen on the description card are the logo of India Post, the five Olympic rings and images of the two stamps.

The Parthenon:

The Parthenon was a temple on the Athenian Acropolis, in Ancient Greece dedicated the goddess Athena, whom the citizens of Athens considered to be their patron.

Its construction began in 447 BC when the Athenian Empire was at the peak of its power and was completed in 438 BC with its decoration being undertaken for a further period of six years until 432 BC.

 It is the most important surviving structure of Classical Greece and it is regarded as an enduring symbol of Ancient Greece, Athenian democracy and western civilisation, and one of the world’s greatest cultural monuments. Its decorative sculptures are considered to be the high points of Grecian art.

Over a period of time the temple served variously as a Christian Church (590 AD to 1490 AD) and a Muslim mosque (under the Ottoman Turks – 1490 to around 1830)

In 1656 when an Ottoman Turk Gunpowder Magazine kept in the Acropolis came under attack by the Venetians and blew up destroying part of the temple).

Again, in 1687, the Parthenon was extensively damaged when another Venetian expeditionary force struck an identical Gunpowder Magazine stored in the Acropolis which blew up killing some 300 Turkish defenders a second time. The explosion destroyed about three-fifths of the buildings sculptures from the frieze wall as well as several walls and columns, marble architraves, triglyphs and metopes and.

From 1801 to 1803, the Earl of Elgin “contrived to steal” several marble statues/structures from the Parthenon, which have since found their way into the British Museum, Louvre in Paris etc.

In 1832, independent Greece gained control of Athens and the medieval Christian and Ottoman Muslim structures in the temple were demolished.

The Greek government in 1975 began a concerted effort to restore the Parthenon and other Acropolis structures to their original shape. Work commenced in 2002 and is still in progress on the restoration of the structures.

Pierre de Coubertin’s definition of the Olympic Spirit:

Pierre de Coubertin (the originator of the Modern Olympics) believed that “sport contributed to the harmonious and well-balanced development of the body, personality and mind”. In his words the Olympic spirit was described as “The important thing is not to win, but to take part, and view athletes who try their best but finish last as epitomising the Olympic Spirit”.

As such the IOC aims to promote Olympism and Olympic ideals throughout the world and reinforce cooperation with educational institutions and NOCs with projects targeting young people.

In other words, true Olympic Spirit is often found away from the Gold Medal winners with their agents and sponsorship deals – it is found in its purest sense in those that come last.

About Olympism:

Olympism is described as – “a philosophy of life, exalting and combining in a balanced whole the qualities of body, will and mind. Blending sport with culture and education, Olympism seeks to create a way of life based on the joy found in effort, the educational value of good example and respect for universal fundamental ethical principles.”

The goal of the Olympic Movement is to contribute to building a peaceful and better world by educating youth through sport practices without discrimination of any kind and in the Olympic spirit, which requires mutual understanding with a spirit of friendship, solidarity and fair play.

The Olympic Spirit:

The Olympic Spirit is best expressed in the Olympic Creed:

“The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win but to take part, just as the most important thing in life is not the triumph but the struggle. The essential thing is not to have conquered but to have fought well”

The Olympic Games give everyone a chance to celebrate their shared humanity and the objective of the competitors is to express this humanity by performing fairly and honestly to the best of their natural ability.

The Olympic Spirit can be seen in all those who compete in the Games, not just in those who win the medals.

This spirit can be seen in athletes from poorer parts of the world who have little chance/limited opportunities to develop their skills or gain experience, nevertheless, they do the best they can with the limited resources and represent their countries with pride and dignity.

In the spirit of the Olympics, the most important thing is to have taken part fairly and to have done one’s best.

There have been numerous instances when athletes with an excellent opportunity to win a medal, give up the race to help out injured/distressed fellow participants to receive medical attention or they help them to somehow reach the finish line. They lose the opportunity to win a medal, but gain a friend for a lifetime, in the true spirit of the Olympic Games. The Olympic spirit can be seen in not only the distressed athlete, but more so, in the one giving him/her support to get medical relief, cross the finishing line, even though they come in last.

The Olympic Spirit inculcates in an athlete the opportunity to participate fairly irrespective of the end result. In a sense, it teaches one to live life on these principles of fairness and shared humanity.

The Mission of the Olympic Spirit:

The Mission of the Olympic Spirit is “to build a peaceful and better world in the Olympic Spirit which requires mutual understanding with a spirit of friendship, solidarity and fair play – the Olympic Spirit strives to inspire and motivated the youth of the world to be the best they can be through educational and entertaining interactive challenges. The Olympic Spirit seeks to instill and develop the values and ideals of Olympism in those who visit and to promote tolerance and understanding in these increasingly troubled times in which we live, to make our world a more peaceful place”.

The Olympic Truce:

The tradition of the Olympic Truce dates back to the 9^th century BC in Ancient Greece. The tradition of the “Truce” or “Ekecheiria” was established in Ancient Greece by the signature of a Treaty between three kings. During the truce period, the athletes, artists and their families, as well as ordinary pilgrims could travel in total safety to participate in or attend the Olympic Games and return afterwards to their respective countries. As the opening of the Games approached, the “sacred truce” was proclaimed and announced by citizens of Elis who travelled throughout Greece to pass on the message.

This concept of Olympic Truce has been revived by the International Olympic Committee with a view to protecting, as far as possible, the interests of the athletes and sport in general and to encourage searching for peaceful and diplomatic solutions to conflicts around the world.
