The 2018 Winter Olympics, officially known as the "XXIII Winter Games" or "PyeongChang 2018" are scheduled to take place from 9th to 25th February 2017.

There will be 90 nations participating in seven sports that will cover 102 events in all. This is the second time, the Republic of Korea will be  hosting an Olympic event, the first time being in 1988, when the Games of the XXIV Olympiad were hosted in the country's capital Seoul.

The official mascots for the Games:

Soohorang:

Soohorang - the white tiger mascot of PyeongChang 2018
The white tiger, now the trustworthy mascot for the Olympic Winter Games 2018, has long been considered to be Korea's guardian animal.

"Sooho" meaning "protection" in Korean symbolises protection offered to the athletes and spectators and other participants in the 2018 Games.

"Rang" comes from the middle letter of "Ho-rang-I", the word for "Tiger" and is also the last letter of "Jeong-seon-A-ri-rang", a cherished traditional folk song of Gangwon Province where the Games will bbe held.

Characteristics of the Olympic Mascot:
"Soohorang", the mascot of the PyeonChang 2018 Winter Olympics took its motif from the white tiger. "Soohorang" not only has a challenging spirit and passion, but also is a trust-worthy friend who protects the athletes, spectators and all participants in the Olympic Games.

Bandabi:

Bandabi - The Asiatic Bear Mascot of PyeongChang 2018

The Asiatic black-bear or "ban-dal-ga-seum-gom" (the bear with a half moon mark on the chest), symbolises will-power and courage in the Korean folklore. This bear now has been selected as a friendly mascot for the Paralympic Games in 2018.

"Banda" is derived from "ban-dal" the Korean word for the half-moon.

"Bi" stands for celebration of the Games.

Characteristics of the Paralympic Mascot:

Bandabi, the mascot of the PyeongChang 2018 Paralympic Winter Games took its motif from the Asiatic black bear. Bandabi has string will-power and courage. It is a warm-hearted friend who takes the lead for equality and harmony and encourages athletes to push themselves beyond their limits.

Between North & South Korea - an initiative is being considered to label 2018 PyeongChang as a "Peace Olympics", despite the continuous rising tensions between the two neighbours & the USA on account of the missile testing programme of North Korea.

Interestingly, North Korean athletes will be allowed to travel through the demilitarised no-go zone into South Korea as a symbolic peace gesture before the commencement of the 2018 Winter Olympics.
An image of the demilitarised zone between North & South Korea, which is one of the most heavily guarded areas in the world. The 4 km wide zone has a huge number of armed troops stationed on both sides and no movement of persons is allowed between the two nations.

A concept is afoot  that both North & South Korea could enter one women's ice hockey team, so as to make PyeongChang 2018 a "Peace Olympics" between the two nations.

Also proposed is a collaboration between North and South Korea at the 2018 Winter Olympics.
