The National Bank of Macedonia has unveiled two new Banknotes in the denominations of 10 and 50 Denars on 24.04.2018.

These two denominations (10 & 50 Denar Banknotes) are the smallest Banknote values, which will now be printed on plastic substrate and will incorporate new and updated security features.

The new Security features:

The new Banknotes will contain security threads specially designed for polymer Banknotes, micro-text which is visible with a magnifying glass, a double  registration mark, a latent image and a UV feature. 

There would also be a transparent window containing all recognisable elements from their original design.

A new addition to the two polymer banknotes is a tactile feature which will aid the identification of the Banknotes for the visually impaired persons.

Both Banknotes will retain their original designs, colour schemes and dimensions originally introduced in 1996 as paper issues.

The National Bank of Macedonia has impressed that the old similar denomination Banknotes will cease to be issued from the same day that the new polymer Banknotes are released into circulation. The paper versions will be gradually replaced with the new plastic/polymer Denars, as the Banknotes are processed through financial institutions. The two denominations will also circulate with their coin equivalents, which were originally  introduced in 2008.

The Front of the 10 Denars Banknote has a design that includes the depiction of the torso of the Egyptian Goddess Isida, revered as the mother of all nature and created from alabaster.

The Back of the 10 Denars Banknote depicts a stylised drawing of a peacock. The detail is from an original mosaic found on the floor of the baptisteries of the Episcopal Basilica in the ancient city of Stobi and is from the 5th to 6th Century AD.

The dimensions of the 10 Denars Banknote are 70 mm x 140 mm and its pre-dominant colours are dark blue, yellow and pink.

The Front of the 50 Denars Banknote design includes an engraving of an early Byzantine coin which was part of the monetary reform of 498 AD undertaken by Emperor Anastasius in an effort to eliminate inflation and monetary chaos in the Eastern part of the Roman Empire.

The new copper Folis weighed precisely 9.10 grams and made up 72 parts of one copper Pound. The Folis with the letter "M" were valued at 50 Numies , while those with the letter "K" equalled 20 Numies and the coins bearing the letter "I" represented a value of 10 Numies. 

The Back of the 50 Denars Banknote depicts a fine painting from the scene of the Annunciation and portrays the Archangel Gabriel.

The fresco is found on the East wall of the church of St. Ghiorghi in Kurbinovo which dates from the year 1191 AD and is located on the Lake Prespa. The frescos were painted by the artist Pictor I.

The dimensions of the 50 Denars Banknote are 73 mm x 140 mm and the pre-dominant colours are dark blue, purple and yellow.

Presently, Banknotes of the 1996 and 2003 Series are predominantly in circulation in Macedonia, which include:

2,000 Denars (2016 issue), 1,000 Denars (1996 and 2003 issues), 500 Denars (1996 and 2003 issues), 200 Denars (2016 issues), 100 Denars (1996 issue), 50 Denars (1996 issue), 10 Denars (1996 issue).

Banknotes issued by the National Bank of Macedonia are made to the highest international standards on high quality paper made from 100% cotton fibres, with embedded elements for protection against counterfeiting.

The Banknotes possess several security features, such as, a water-mark, windowed thread, intaglio print, latent image, micro-text, see-through feature and optically variable ink.
