This 2020 mini-sheet issued by Correos Espana (Spanish Post) features one of the most impressive illustrations by cartoonist Ricardo Martinez-RiCARDO.

The Mini-Sheet (MS) containing the Postage stamp of 5.45 Euros issued by Correos Espana depicting the graphic humour of Ricardo

A rhinoceros drawn using the scratchboard technique, has a Correos letter/post-box for a horn, which is the main motif on the Graphic Humour stamp.

On the post-box is depicted Ricardo's quintessential character - Goomer - who is smiling while posting a letter. Goomer was his trademark character for almost 30 years. He was published in El Pais, El Mundo, El Jueves, et al and even in the USA, India, Malaysia and several other countries.

This stamp presents his facet as an illustrator, as well as, a cartoonist, which undoubtedly, is what has given him the most popularity.

The First Day Cover (FDC) is titled "HUMOR GRAFICO RICARDO" (meaning "Graphic Humour Ricardo").

The FDC image at left depicts the Rhinoceros image drawn by Ricardo with a letter-box on its horn, with a bird posting a letter, while another one sits on its nose.

The postage stamp is affixed at top right. It has been cancelled by a special Handstamp/postmark depicting Goomer posting a letter. The cancellation stamp is of Madrid and is dated "12.06.2020".

About Ricardo Martinez-RICARDO:

He was born in Chile, the son of Spanish emigrants and moved to Spain as an adolescent. At the end of the 1970s and beginning of the 1980s, he started out in the world of advertising illustrations.

During this period, along with his friend Nacho (Joseph Ignacio Moreno Cunat), he created Goomer comic, which was first published in El Pais and then, since 1990, in El Mundo.

At the latter newspaper, he held the post of Assistant Chief Editor and ran the Art Department while also embarking on his path as a political illustrator.

What particularly stands out in his prolific work is his drawings of animals - like the one illustrated on this stamp issue. Elephants, lions and lemurs made him become obsessed with the animal world.

He wrote a book titled "El animal ilustrado" ("The Animals Illustrated"), which contains sketches, drawings or creative processes for these works of art. which depict animals in the wild or anthropomorphized using a technique, which consists of scraping a knife on a board or card painted black.
