Given below is a sheet of 12 Stamps titled “MyStamps”, featuring my (Rajeev’s) photo, together with an image from the Port Blair Island (Andaman and Nicobar Islands), showing a clear blue Indian Ocean with myriad Sea life depicting colourful fishes etc.:

The above is an image of the MyStamps Sheet containing 12 Stamps of the value of Rs.5/- each, depicting a cross-section/segment of the Sea life around Port Blair Island, together with my (Rajeev’s) photograph.

This stamp sheet is contained in an elegant Stamp Album, image of which is as under:

The Stamp Album is also titled: “Bhartiya Dak Tikit” (in Hindi) and “India Postage stamps” (in English).

About Port Blair Island (Andaman and Nicobar Islands):

Port Blair is the capital of Andaman and Nicobar Islands which is a Union territory of India, located in the Bay of Bengal.

Port Blair is connected to the Indian Mainland through a sea route involving a journey of about 3-4 days to reach the shores of Chennai, Kolkata or Vishakhapatnam. It is also connected by Air with flights going to and from Chennai, Kolkata, New Delhi, Bhubaneswar and Vishakhapatnam. The Airport at Port Blair and is presently called Veer Savarkar International Airport and is named after the legendary Indian Freedom Fighter and philosopher who was incarcerated in Port Blair’s infamous Cellular Jail.

Port Blair has several museums, a small quaint zoo, and places which remind you of the atrocities committed by the British Raj against Indian Freedom fighters and political prisoners – Ross Island, Viper Island etc.

Port Blair is also home to a major Naval base “INS Jarawa” (named after the indigenous Tribe inhabiting the Islands) of the Indian Navy and Sea and Air bases of the Indian Coast Guard and the Indian Air Force respectively.

Port Blair has been selected as one of the 100 Indian cities to be developed as a “Smart City” under the Smart Cities Project/Mission.

Our visit to Port Blair Island:

Sumita and I visited the Andaman Islands in March 1995. We took a Flight out of Kolkata to Port Blair and back after a week long holiday, where we explored a lot of the Capital city on our own, apart from the conducted tours.

We visited “Chiriya Tapu” (meaning the “Bird Island” or the “Island of Birds” or the “Bird Sanctuary”) on our own, as it was not on the tourist circuit then and was served by only a bus in the mornings and one in the evenings, where we were greeted by a friendly dog, whom we named “Sandy”, Boat-ride excursion to the Jolly Buoy Islands, Ross Islands (which served as a British garrison and a penal establishment between 1864 and 1867) , the customary Seven Islands boat ride, Viper Island and local sight-seeing like -  a Museum, Cellular Jail, a quaint little zoo , the Band Stand, browsing through the local book-stores, meeting several friendly people et al. We met a gentleman who belonged to one of the oldest tribes of the Islands in a local bus, who narrated enthusiastically the history of the Islands and of his people.

We spent our time purchasing local gifts items at the handicrafts stores and from street-side vendors – an old lady sold us hand-crafted straw hats for our friends back home, and enjoying the local cuisine – particularly the rice, curry and prawns – all of which made for a memorable holiday.

Fareed, the Hotel house-keeper who acted as a guide during our stay at Port Blair, taking time off from his busy schedule, , became a very good friend and took us round on the local sight-seeing and accompanied us on the boat-rides describing every place in great detail. When we left Port Blair Island, we exchanged gifts – a tropical designer shirt and a book for Fareed, while he gave us a Conch shell and a piece of drift-wood which he had found on the sea-shore during his school days. We still have these in our book-shelf and remember the Port Blair trip and Fareed every time we see them.
Images of the piece of polished drift-wood and of the Conch shell which Fareed had collected during his school days which he gifted to us as a gesture of friendship.
Given below is a set of two spoons gifted to us by Maggie and Dennis, who had gone for a holiday to Port Blair a few years later. Don't miss the little thatched hut artwork towards the bottom of the spoons together with tropical foliage around it.

All this gifting and re-gifting of artefacts reminds me of the "Kula exchange", or "Kula ring" or "Kula Arm Band" or "Bracelet" which is a ceremonial exchange system prevalent in the Milne Province of Papua New Guinea. It is a local mode of gift giving:

The Kula ring spans 18 island communities of the Massim archipelago including the Trobriand Islands and encompasses thousands of individuals. Participants travel hundreds of miles by canoe in order to exchange Kula valuables which consist of red shell-disc necklaces – “veigun” or “soulava” – that are traded to the North (circling the ring in a clockwise direction) and white shell Armbands – “mwali” – that are traded in the Southern direction (circling the ring in a counter-clockwise direction). If the opening gift was an armband, then the closing gift must be a necklace and so on. The exchange of Kula valuables is also accompanied by the trade in other items known as “gimwali” (meaning “barter”).
All Kula valuables are non-use items exchanged purely as a symbol of friendship.

Interestingly, Kula gifts do not remain for long in the hands of the recipients, but are passed on to other partners within a certain amount of time, thus constantly circling the ring of Islands.

But unlike the Kula gifts, the piece of driftwood and conch shell gifted to us by Fareed and the spoons gifted by Maggie & Dennis are ours to keep forever as tokens of our friendship.

Some photos from our trip:
Sumita waiting for a Boat at the Fisheries Jetty

Sumita standing under a leafy umbrella at the Jolly Buoy Island. Notice the white sands and the white driftwood. The large white boat in the distance was our ride to the Island. This is the place where one can do snorkeling and see fishes, sea-life and coral, such as the ones shown in the MyStamps sheet above.
Sumita and I waiting for the ride back to Port Blair Island.

At Ross Island: The trees have really grown very tall here and remind one of the "Jungle Book story" by Rudyard Kipling and the present day 3-D Movie which we saw just the other day.
The deer who are found in herds at the Ross Island are very friendly. This one is asking for more after snacking on the tit-bit which he has already wolfed down.
This is the oldest grave in the British Cemetery at Ross Island. The tombstone reads "William Collins, Seaman, HMS Dalhousie. Died October 30, 1862, Aged 28 years".

The Cellular Jail:

The Cellular Jail was a high security prison constructed over a ten year period (1896-1906), entirely by the prisoners. The jail had seven wings with a central watch tower. In all there were 698 cells in these seven wings, in which prisoners were kept in solitary confinement, in cells measuring 4.5 x 2.7 meters. The Cellular Jail was also known as “Kaala Paani” (meaning “Black Water”), a name given to it due to the torture and inhuman treatment inflicted upon the Indian Freedom Fighters. Almost all the prisoners suffered life imprisonment with hard labour under cruel and degrading conditions. Many were hanged while several died of disease and starvation – reminiscent of the conditions prevalent in the Jewish Concentration Camps which were set up by Nazi Germany, during World War II.

Two wings of this jail were destroyed in the World War II in 1942, and another two were destroyed shortly after Independence. Of the remaining three wings, two have been converted into a hospital (a symbolic healing touch, for the atrocities heaped upon the prisoners here under British rule), while one is preserved as a memorial.
I cannot forget the small concrete cell where Swatantrata Veer Vinayak Damodar Savarkar was imprisoned, which I saw during my trip to the Andamans in 1995. I sat inside for a few minutes remembering the sacrifices of all our martyrs.

Commemorative coin issued on the martyrs of Cellular Jail:

The Reserve Bank of India issued a one rupee coin in 1997 for honoured the martyrs of the Indian Independence movement, who were jailed in the Cellular Jail of Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Obverse of the 1997 coin, showing the Asoka Lion Capital, with the words , "Satyameva Jayate" (meaning “Truth Always Prevails”) below it, the words "Bharat Rupiye"(in Hindi) on the left hand side and the words "India Rupee"(in English) on the right hand side. The numeral "1" is at the bottom of the coin.

Reverse of the coin issued by Mumbai Mint (diamond mint mark below the year of issue 1997).

The Reverse of the coin shows two wings with the Central tower and the words “Cellular Jail and Port Blair” both in Hindi and English and the year of issue, 1997.  This coin has been issued by the Mumbai Mint (Diamond mint mark, below the year of issue).

I am placing here, a photo taken at the same spot which is depicted on the reverse side of the coin for a clearer visualization of the image on the coin. (Of course, I do not figure on the coin’s image, so don’t look for me on the coin!!). The person with his back towards the camera is Fareed.

The wing on the left hand side (behind my back on the photo) is the hospital section, while the wing on the right hand side (i.e. in front of me) is the Memorial. Notice, that the white boundary wall of the hospital section has also, been nicely integrated by the master engravers of the Mumbai Mint on the reverse of this coin.

The main gate of the Cellular Jail at Port Blair now turned into a National Memorial.
