India Post has brought out a selection of 48 Post cards in 2015, reflecting the Natural Resources, select food items, Religious Festivals, Indian dresses and customs, heritage buildings, tourist spots et al, which all go to make “Incredible India” and give rise to the phrase “Unity in Diversity”.

I have given the images of these cards together with brief descriptions of the images in this three part post. Although I have tried to group the Post cards together, the images will follow no particular order:

1 Gurudongmar Lake, Sikkim:

The above is an image of the postcard depicting Gurudongmar Lake in Sikkim

Gurudongmar Lake is one of the highest lakes in the World, located at an altitude of 17,800 feet (or about 5,430 metres). It lies in the North Sikkim district in Sikkim, India, about 5 km (or 3.10 miles) South of the Chinese border.

The water of the Lake is believed to possess the miraculous power of granting children to issueless couples. Interestingly, the myth of Gurudongmar is believed as reverentially by the Hindus as by the local Buddhists. Encircled all around by snow-covered mountains, the sacred lake freezes during the winters except at one spot, which is believed to be specially blessed.

There is a temple of the Guru beside the Lake. Pilgrims, tourists as well as Army personnel offer prayers at the temple.

2 Crow’s Lake, Sikkim:

The above is an image of the postcard depicting Crow’s Lake in Sikkim

Crow’s Lake, one of the hundreds of high altitude lakes in North Sikkim, is located North-East of the Kanchenjunga Range of the Great Himalayas in India.

This picturesque lake, the twin-lake of nearby Eagle’s Lake presents fine views towards the Gurudongmar route and the mountains that form the border with Tibet. The Lake remains frozen in the winter months.

3. Kanchenjunga, Sikkim:

The above is an image of the postcard depicting Kanchenjunga, the third highest mountain in the World and the highest in India

Kanchenjunga is the third highest mountain in the World and the highest in India. It rises to an elevation of 8586 metres (or about 28,169 feet) in a section of the Himalayas called “Kanchenjunga Himal” in the Eastern Himalayas. The Kanchenjunga Himal is located in Eastern Nepal and Sikkim, India.

Kanchenjunga was first climbed on 25.05.1955 by Joe Brown and George Band who were part of a British Expedition. They stopped short of the summit as per a promise given to the Chogyal, the King of Sikkim, that the top of the mountain was inviolate. Every climber or climbing group that has reached the summit has followed this tradition.

The Kanchenjunga landscape comprises 14 protected areas which are habitats for many globally significant plant species, such as, Rhododendrons and Orchids and many endangered flagship species such as Snow Leopard, Asian Black Bear, Red Panda, white-bellied Musk Deer, Blood Pheasant and chestnut-breasted Partridge et al.

4. Valley of Flowers National Park, Uttarakhand:

The above is an image of the postcard depicting the Valley of Flowers National Park, in Uttarakhand, India

Valley of Flowers National Park is located in Western Himalayas, in the State of Uttarakhand, India and is known for its meadows of endemic alpine flowers and the variety of flora.

This richly diverse area is also home to rare and endangered animals, including the Asiatic Black Bear, Snow Leopard, Musk Deer, Brown Bear, Red Fox and Blue Sheep.

At 3352 to 3658 metres above sea-level, the gentle landscape of the Valley of Flowers National Park complements the rugged mountain wilderness of Nanda Devi National Park to the East. Together, they encompass a unique transition zone between the mountain ranges of the Zanskar and Great Himalayas. The Park stretches over an expanse of 87.50 sq. km. and is about 8.00 km long and 2.00 km wide.

Both Parks are encompassed in the Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve (223,674 hectares) which is further surrounded by a buffer zone (5,148.57 sq km)

This Reserve is in the UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves since 2004.

(Maharashtra has its own Valley of flowers on the Kaas Plateau (near Satara): For more on the Kaas Plateau wildflowers, please click on the following links on Sumita's blog "Footloose": 1) A weekday trip to the Kaas Valley: Maharashrta's Valley of Flowers )

5. Zanskar meets Indus:

The above is an image of the postcard depicting the confluence of the Zanskar River with the Indus River in Ladakh

The confluence of the Zanskar River (from the top) and the Indus (bottom flowing from left to right) is 3 km South-East of Nimmu village in Ladakh, India. One is a shining blue river, while the other is dirty green. Both of them originate in the high Himalayas. While the Indus originates in the Changthang Cold Desert, the Zanskar River originates in the Zanskar ranges. During the summer months, one can see a fast turgid river in Zanskar and a relatively calmer river in the Indus. During the winters, however, it is just the opposite.

6. Khajjiar, Himachal:

The above is an image of the postcard depicting a scene from Khajjiar, a hill station in Chamba district, Himachal Pradesh, India

Khajjiar is a hill station in Chamba district, Himachal Pradesh, India. Khajjiar sits on a small plateau with a small stream-fed lake in the middle. The hill station is surrounded by meadows and forests. It is about 6.500 feet above sea-level in the foothills of the Dhauladhar Ranges of the western Himalayas and peaks can be seen in the distance.

On 07.07.1992, William Blazer, Vice Counselor and Head of Chancery of Switzerland brought Khajjiar on the world tourism map by calling it “Mini Switzerland”. He also put a sign board of a yellow Swiss hiking footpath showing Khajjiar’s distance from the Swiss capital Bern – 6194 km.

The Counselor also took from Khajjiar a stone which became part of a stone collage around the Swiss Parliament to remind visitors of Khajjiar as a “Mini Switzerland” of India.

7. Kashmir Valley:

The above is an image of the postcard depicting the Kashmir Valley of Vale of Kashmir, in the Indian State of Jammu & Kashmir

The Kashmir Valley of Vale of Kashmir is a valley located between the Karakoram and the Pir Panjal Mountain Ranges in the Indian State of Jammu & Kashmir. It is around 135 km long and 32 km wide, formed by the Jhelum River. The Mughal Emperor Jahangir called it “Paradise on Earth”. The Valley has a moderate climate, which is largely defined by its geography.

The Kashmir Valley is a popular tourist destination for domestic and foreign tourists. Among the popular tourist places in the valley are Gulmarg that has a ski resort, Dal Lake with its house-boats, Pahalgam and the major/ancient Hindu shrine – Amarnath Temple.

8.  “Maitreya” Buddha, Thiksey Monastery, Leh, Ladakh:

The above is an image of the postcard depicting the “Maitreya” Buddha statue

Thiksey Monastery is a Gompa (Monastery) affiliated with the Gelug sect of Tibetan Buddhism. It is located on top of a hill in Thiksey village, approx. 19 km (or about 12 miles) East of Leh in Ladakh, India. It is noted for its resemblance to the Potala Palace in Lhasa, Tibet and is the largest Gompa in Central Ladakh. The Monastery is located at an altitude of 3,600 metres (or about 11,800 ft) in the Indus Valley. It is a 12-storey complex and houses many items of Buddhist Art such as Stupas, Statues, Thangkas, Wall Paintings and Swords.

One of the main points of interest is the “Maitreya” (future Buddha) Temple erected to commemorate the visit of the 14th Dalai Lama to this Monastery in 1970. It contains a 15 metre (or 49 feet) high statue of Maitreya Buddha. He is unusually portrayed as seated in the lotus position rather than his usual representations as standing or in a sitting posture on a high throne. As the largest statue of the Buddha to be deified in the Monastery, it took four years to craft. It was made by local artists under the master Nawang Tsering of the Central Institute of Buddhist Studies, Leh – in clay, gold paint and copper.

(For more on Sumita's trip to Leh, Ladakh and the Thiksey Monastery please read the following fascinating account of the tripExploring Ladakh: Spending time in Leh)

9) “Ao Naga”, Nagaland, North-East India:

The above is an image of the postcard depicting a member of the “Ao Naga” tribe of Nagaland, North-East India

The “Ao Naga is one of the major tribes of Nagaland, North-East India, numbering around 250,000. The “Moatsu” Festival is celebrated in Nagaland by the Ao tribe. It is observed every year in the first week of May. After sowing the seeds, the Aos observe “Moatsu Mong”. The main aim of “Moatsu” Festival is to seek blessings of Almighty God after completing the various activities. The best rice beer is made and the best food is prepared for the feast during the Festival. The women-folk and men-folk enthusiastically participate in eating, dancing, drinking and singing martial songs glorifying the courage and gallantry of their heroes.

10) Lakshadweep Islands:

The above is an image of the postcard depicting the Lakshadweep Islands

Lakshadweep is a tropical Archipelago of 36 Atolls and Coral Reefs in the Laccadive Sea, off the coast of Kerala, India. Not all of the islands are inhabited and only a few are open to tourists who are required to obtain permits.

Bangaram Island at 2.30 sq kms is the largest island in the Atoll. There is a long brackish pond in the centre of the island fringed by screw-pine and coconut palms. It has no residences but has a resort. The island is popular for its serene setting. Numerous species of tropical birds are found on the island. The resort offers numerous adventure activities, including scuba diving, snorkelling, deep-sea fishing, besides white sand beaches, a calm lagoon and a sparkling, clear coral reef.

11) “Rasagulla”:

The above is an image of the postcard depicting Rasagullas, which is a sweet syrupy dessert

Rasagulla” is a syrupy dessert popular in the India Sub-continent, especially in Odisha and West Bengal. The dish originated in Puri, Odisha in the 12th Century as a custom of Lord Jagannath offering “Khiramohana” to his consort Lakshmi to calm her down on the day of “Niladri Bije” during the “Rath Yatra” (Chariot Festival)

A whitish spongy variant called “Bengali Rasagulla” became popular in Bengal in the middle of the 19th Century. The traditional Rasagullas of Odisha are softer and creamish in colour. Rasagullas are made from ball-shaped dumplings of “chenna” (Indian cottage cheese) cooked in a light syrup made of sugar. This is done until the syrup permeates the dumplings.

Presently, canned Rasagullas are available throughout India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, as well as, in South Asian grocery stores outside the Sub-continent.

12) “Litti:

The above is an image of the postcard depicting “Litti” a snack food item

Litti” is a snack food item very popular in the Indian State of Bihar. It consists of wheat and “sattu” (powdered gram or lentil) formed into balls with spices and then filled with “ghee” (clarified butter) through a hole made for this purpose. Although very often confused with the closely related “Baati”, it is completely different dish in terms of taste, texture and preparation. It may be eaten with yogurt, “baigan bharta”, “alu bharta” and “papad”.

Spices used to flavour the “litti” include “ajowain”, “kalonji”, garlic, red pepper, mustard oil, salt and ginger. Tasty pickles can also be used to add spice flavour. In Western Bihar and Eastern Uttar Pradesh “litti” is served with “murgh korma” (a creamy chicken curry – for non-vegetarians) and “chokha” (a vegetable preparation of roasted and mashed egg-plant, tomato and potato).

13. Dosa” making:

The above is an image of the postcard depicting “Dosa” making a popular food item all over South India.

The basic “Dosa” recipe calls for soaking “urad dal” (skinned black lentils) and rice. The soaked lentils and rice are then finely ground and fermented overnight. Warm temperature is important for the “Dosa” batter to ferment well. “Methi” seeds are added to aid the fermentation process. The “masala” in the “Dosa” is a potato filling.

The easiest and simple version of it is where a lot of onions are added to the potato filling. Once the “Dosa” batter is ready, the cook takes a spoonful and pours it onto the griddle. The batter is spread in a circular manner to get a thin round “Dosa” and oil is poured on the top and edges. The dosa is then flipped over to cook the other side and the potato “masala” (filling) is added to make a “masala Dosa”.

The “Dosa” comes in several other varieties – Plain, Rava, Set, Paneer, etc, depending on the fillings which suit the palate of the person eating it. It is served hot with a spicy “sambhar” and coconut “chutney”.

14. “Halwa:

The above is an image of the postcard depicting “Halwa”, a dessert item.

Halwa” refers to many types of dense, sweet confections, served across South Asia, Central Asia, West Asia, North Africa, the Horn of Africa, the Balkans, Central Europe, Eastern Europe, Malta and the Jewish world.

In India, “Halwa” is prepared in different forms. The recipes use flour, melted butter or ghee (clarified butter) and sugar. It comes in various colours – orange, brown, green and cream, with a translucent appearance studded with raisins, cashew nuts, pistachios, almonds etc.

Technically, the term “Halwa” is used in indigenous recipes throughout India and though “semolina Halwa” is considered to be essentially a “Northern” confection, it is also quite popular in South India. A prominent South Indian version of “Halwa” (or “Alvaa” in Tamil) is from Tirunelveli, a city in the Indian State of Tamil Nadu. Another semolina preparation widely enjoyed throughout South India called “Kesari” or “Kesari Baath” originates from the Indian State of Karnataka.

15. Balushahi:

The above is an image of the postcard depicting “Balushahi” a traditional Indian dessert.

Balushahi” is a traditional dessert in Indian, Nepali and Bangladeshi cuisine. It is similar to a glazed doughnut in terms of ingredients, but differs in texture and taste. In South India, a similar pastry is called “Badushah”.

Balushahis” are made of “maida” flour and are deep-fried in “ghee” (clarified butter) and then dipped in sugar syrup. They are very sweet and tasty with a slightly flaky texture.

16. “Upma”:

The above is an image of the postcard depicting “Upma” a common South Indian breakfast dish

Upma” or “Uppittu” is a common South Indian breakfast dish, cooked as a thick porridge from dry roasted semolina or coarse rice flour. Various seasonings and/or vegetables are often added during the cooking, depending on individual preferences. In many Dravidian languages, the word “Uppu” means salt and the word “Mavu” or “Hittu” means flour. Hence the name “Uppumavu” or “Uppittu”.

In North India, it is called “Upma” short for “Uppumavu”.

17. “Daal-Bati-Choorma”:

The above is an image of the postcard depicting”Daal-Bati-Churma” a complete dish

Daal-Bati-Churma” is a complete dish. “Baati” is a hard, unleavened bread cooked in the desert areas of Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. It is prized for its long shelf life and high nutritional content, it is traditionally prepared by coarsely mashing “Baati” and pouring “ghee” (clarified butter) on top of it. It is served with “dal” (lentils) and spicy garlic chutney or with “besan” (gram flour).

It is commonly served at all festivities, including religious occasions, wedding ceremonies and birthday parties in Rajasthan.

“Churma” is basically a sweet side dish eaten with “Daal-Bati” and is made sweet by adding sugar or jaggery to it. To make it tastier and healthier, ghee is added to it. Additional ingredients to it could be dry fruits like cashew, pistachios, almonds or raisins.

18. Spices of India:

The above is an image of the postcard depicting various colourful spices of India.

This could be a typical scene from anywhere in India.
