The
Indian Institute of Architects – Brief history:
The Indian Institute of Architects
(IIA) is the National Body of Architects in the country.
It was established in 12.05.1917,
by George Wittet, the then Consulting
Architect to the Government of Bombay (present say Mumbai), who was unanimously
elected the first President of the Indian Institute of Architects, which was
primarily an association made of the past students of Architecture of J.J.School
of Art, then known as “The Architectural Students Association”.
On 03.08.1922, it
got renamed as the “Bombay Architectural Association” which got
associated with the Royal Institute of British Architects in 1925.
In 1926, the
Association got its present name “The Indian Institute of Architects”
and became a National Body.
On 02.09.1929, it
became registered under the Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860 as a
voluntary organisation of Architects.
The only other
Organisation at the National level is the “Council of Architecture”
which was established under the Architect’s Act 1972.
Chapters:
The Northern Chapter
of the “Indian Institute of Architects” was started in 1956. Since then
it has established Chapters in several Indian States and in major Indian
cities, within those States.
These Chapters, inter alia,
are:
IIA–Andhra Pradesh
Chapter, Northern Chapter (IIA), West Bengal Chapter, Kerala Chapter (IIA),
IIA-Chandigarh-Punjab Chapter, Sholapur-Maharashtra Chapter, Odisha Chapter.
Professional
Courses:
The Institute of Architects
conducts a professional examination if four parts. Students who qualify all the
parts are awarded Associate Membership, which is a recognised qualification to
work as an architect. The Institute also provides courses in Architecture, Town
Planning and Human Settlement development.
Association
with Foreign Bodies and co-operation in exchange of Architectural, Art and
Building initiatives and innovations:
The Indian Institute of
Architects (IIA) is represented on various national and international
committees connected with Architecture, Art and the building industry and is
also actively associated with the International Union of Architects (UIA),
Commonwealth Association of Architects (CAA) and South Asian Association for
Regional Co-operation of Architects (SAARCH).
The Indian Institute of
Architects (IAA) extends information of the Architectural scenario in India for
the fellow Architects, prospective clients, students and people in general.
Present
day:
The Institute has more
than 20,000 members and plays a major role in promoting the profession of Architecture
by organising and uniting in fellowship the Architects of India to promote
aesthetic, scientific and practical efficiency of the profession both in Practice
and in Education.
In the “Renaissance” or “Reawakening” of India,
the Institute has played a pivotal role in the sphere of architecture. Its
members are men and women of vision and ideals who have toiled hard to build
the foundations of India’s Architectural marvels in the finest possible ways.
A
Special Cover brought out on 12.05.2016 by Maharashtra Postal Circle,
Department of Posts, India commemorating the commencement of the Centenary Year
of the establishment of the Indian Institute of Architects in 1917:
The Front of the Special Cover released to commemorate the Centenary of the establishment of the
Institute is titled “THE INDIAN INSTITUTE OF ARCHITECTS 1917-2017” (in both
Hindi and English). There is a stylised picture of the Institute, below the
title. The Rs.5/- stamp is one of three stamps commemorating the valour and
sacrifice of the Indian Armed Forces during the Indo-Pak War 1965 and shows an
infantry troop in attack formation advancing deep inside Pakistani territory.
The Cancellation stamp is
inscribed “THE INDIAN INSTITUTE OF ARCHITECTS 1917-2017” (in both Hindi and
English), and “Shatabdi Samaroh” (in Hindi) and “Celebrating 100 Years” (in
English). The Cancellation is of Mumbai and is dated “12.05.2016”
The Back of the Special Cover shows the logo of the Institute of Architects in the top centre and the Name
and Centenary Years “THE INDIAN INSTITUTE OF ARCHITECTS 1917-2017”

in Marathi, Hindi and English:
“The journey of “The
Indian Institute of Architects” started on 12th May 1917 as an Architectural
Students Association in the historic meeting of the past students in the sylvan
surroundings of Sir J.J. School of Arts, Bombay (present day Mumbai). Later to
make it truly representative of its professional character, the association was
named as “Bombay Architectural Association” on 15th June 1922. Finally
to encourage the study of Architecture, elevate standards of architectural
practice throughout India, the association was on 2nd September 1929
once again re-christened as “The Indian Institute of Architects”.
Further below is the name
of the issuing authority: ”Dak Vibhag, Maharashtra Dak Parimandal” (in Hindi)
and “Maharashtra Postal Circle, Department of Posts” (in English). This is
flanked by the logo of India Post. The approval serial number of this Special
Cover is MH/19/2016 (mentioned on the top right hand side).
