As mentioned in Part I, India Post has brought out a selection of 48 Post Cards in 2015, reflecting the Natural Resources, select food items, Religious Festivals, Indian dresses and customs, heritage buildings, tourist spots et al, which all go to make “Incredible India” and give rise to the phrase “Unity in Diversity”.

I have given the images of these cards together with brief descriptions of the images in this three part post. This is Part II of this post:

19. “Deepawali” or “Diwali”, the”Festival of Lights”:

“Deepawali” or “Diwali”, the “Festival of Lights” is an ancient Hindu festival celebrated in autumn (northern hemisphere) every year. The festival spiritually signifies victory of light over darkness.

On Diwali night, Hindus dress up in their new clothes, light up “diyas” (meaning “lamps” or “candles”) inside and outside their homes, participate in family “puja” (“prayers”) typically to Lakshmi, the Goddess of wealth and prosperity and Ganesh, . After puja, fireworks follow (this is mostly discontinued by the majority of the families owing to noise and air pollution), then a family feast including “mithai” (sweets) and an exchange of gifts between family members and close friends. Diwali also marks a major shopping period when gold and silver coins and ornaments, new clothes and utensils are purchased.

Diwali is celebrated around the world, particularly in countries with significant populations of Hindu, Jain and Sikh origin. With more understanding of Indian culture and global migration of people of Indian origin, the number of countries where Diwali/Deepawali is celebrated has been gradually increasing.

While in some countries it is celebrated mainly by Indian expatriates, in others, it is becoming part of the general local culture.

20) Durga Puja:

Durga Puja also referred to as “Durgotsav” (Festival of Durga) is an annual Hindu festival in Eastern India that celebrates worship of the Hindu Goddess Durga.

The dates of Durga Puja celebrations are set according to the traditional Hindu calendar. Durga Puja festival marks the victory of Goddess Durga over the evil buffalo demon Mahishasur. Hus, Durga Puja Festival epitomises the victory of Good over Evil.

Durga Puja is widely celebrated in the India States of Assam, Bihar, Jharkhand, Manipur, Orissa, Tripura and West Bengal., where it is a five-day annual holiday. Durga Puja is also celebrated as a major festival in Nepal where the majority of the population is Hindu and in Bangladesh.

Many Assamese and Bengali cultural organisations arrange for Durgotsav in countries such as USA, Canada, UK, Australia, Germany, France, The Netherlands, Singapore and Kuwait among others.

21) Dahi Handi:

“Dahi Handi” (curd in an earthen pot) is an Indian festival celebrated every August that involves making a human pyramid and breaking an earthen pot filled with curd, tied at a height.

This event is based on the legend of the child-god Krishna stealing butter and curd in this way. A participant in this Festival is called “Govinda”.

It is a popular festival in the Indian State of Maharashtra, particularly in Mumbai. It is a part of the main Festival of “Krishna Jamnashtami” held to celebrate the birth of Krishna.

22) Water Lily:

23) The Agri-Horticultural Society of India, Kolkata:

The Agri-Horticultural Society of India was founded in 1820 on the Alipore Road, Kolkata. It has a flower garden, green-houses, a research laboratory and a library. It houses a massive collection of plants and flowers. 

Courses on gardening and cultivation of certain species are offered to the general public from time to time. A large variety of ferns and medicinal plants are grown in the Society’s gardens. 

Thousands of fruits and flowers are grown and may also be bought at the nursery. It organises annual flower shows in winters and imparts training in horticulture which is a major seasonal attraction.

24) Marble Inlay Works, Agra:

25) National Highway-8 Mumbai to Delhi:

The above is an image of a postcard depicting a stretch on the National Highway-8 (or NH-8) from Mumbai to Delhi

National Highway – 8 (NH-8) is a four lane (6 lane between Delhi and Jaipur) National Highway in India. National Highway-8 is the first project to get completed under the Golden Quadrilateral Project. 

The 1428 km (or 887 miles) long Highway connects the Indian capital Delhi to the financial capital of India: Mumbai. It connects Delhi-Gurgaon-Jaipur-Udaipur-AjmerGandhinagar-Ahmedabad-Vadodara-Surat-Silvassa-Mumbai.

Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway and Ahmedabad Vadodara Expressway or NE1 are part of the NH 8. It is known as the Western express Highway in Mumbai.

26) Bandra-Worli Sea Link:

The Bandra-Worli Sea Link is a cable-stayed bridge with pre-stressed concrete-steel viaducts on either side that links Bandra in the Western Suburbs of Mumbai with Worli in South Mumbai.

The bridge is a part of the Western Freeway that will link the Western Suburbs to Nariman Point in Mumbai’s main business district. The Sea link reduces travel time between Bandra and Worli during peak hours from 60 -90 minutes to 20-30 minutes.

The construction of the bridge’s structure presented major engineering challenges. These included the highly variable geotechnical conditions due to the underlying marine geology of the Sea-bed. At times, even plan area of a single pile had a highly uneven foundation bed. Further complications included the presence of a variable intertidal zone, with parts of the foundation bed.

27) Victoria Memorial, Kolkata:

The Victoria Memorial is a large marble building in Calcutta (present day Kolkata), India which was built between 1906 and 1921. It is dedicated to the memory of Queen Victoria (1819-1901) and is now a museum and tourist destination. The Memorial lies on the “Maidan” (ground) by the bank of the Hooghly River. 

The Memorial was funded by many Indian Princely States, individuals of the British Raj and the British government in London. The total cost of this monument was estimated to be about Rs.105,00,000 which was collected mainly through voluntary subscriptions. 

The Victoria Memorial’s architect was William Emerson (1843-1924), President of the Royal Institute of British Architects. The design is in the Indo-Sarcenic revivalist style. This style uses a mixture of British and Mughal elements as well as Venetian, Egyptian, Deccani and Islamic architectural influences. The building is 338 feet by 228 feet and rises to a height of 184 feet. It is constructed of white Makrana marble. 

28) “Ugra Narasimha”, Hampi:

The above is an image of a postcard depicting the rock-cut idol of Ugra Narasimha, the fierce/infuriated aspect of Lord Vishnu(Protector of the universe according to Hindu mythology) in one of his “Avatars” (incarnations) 

Hampi (Hampe) is a village in Northern Karnataka, India. It was one of the richest and largest cities in the World during its prime. It is located within the ruins of the ancient city of Vijayanagara, the former capital of the Vijayanagara Empire. The ruins are a UNESCO World Heritage Site, listed as the Group of Monuments at Hampi. The Empire boasted of a massive army comprising about a million combatants.  

Around 1500 AD Hampi had about 500,000 inhabitants making it the second largest city in the World after Peking-Beijing and almost thrice the size of Paris. 

To the south of Hampi is this massive rock-cut idol of “Ugra Narasimha” the fierce/infuriated aspect of Lord Vishnu which is 6.7 metres high. 

Originally the idol bore a smaller image of Lakshmi seated on one knee, but this has fallen off due to vandalism. The Lakshmi statue is now in the museum at Kamalapuram.  

Narasimha is depicted seated on the coils of “Shesh Nag” (a mythical serpent – “Shesh” means “that which remains”, because when the World was destroyed at the end of the “Kalpa-Yug” equivalent to 4.32 billion years, Shesh Nag remained as he is. He is believed to be a thousand headed serpent).  

Shesh Nag is depicted here in a form with seven heads, the heads arching over Narasimha to form a canopy. 

29) Pyramid Valley, Bangalore:

The above is an image of a postcard depicting the Pyramid Valley in Bangalore which is an International Meditation Centre which houses the World’s largest meditational pyramid 

Pyramid Valley is an International Meditation Centre that houses the World’s largest meditational pyramid. It is a centre dedicated to the quest for self-realisation among individuals, societies and organisations and in their journey for attainment of spiritual wisdom. The Pyramid Valley is located in a village called Kebbedoddi, around 30 km from Bangalore. 

The meditation centre was founded by Brahmarshi Patriji in 2003. It was established with the vision that it would serve as a common platform for the spiritual leaders and masters from all over the world to collaborate for love, peace and harmony across the world in the shortest possible time.

30) Southern Railway Headquarters, Chennai:

Southern Railway Headquarters Administrative Building, Chennai is an Indo-Saracenic structure located adjacent to the Chennai Central Railway station. 

Built in 1921, as the new Madras and Southern Mahratta Railway Company (MSMR) Headquarters, the Building now functions as the Headquarters of the Southern Railways. 

Built for the first time in India in reinforced concrete in Classical and Dravidian styles, the building was designed by N.Grayson a “company architect” working for the Madras and Southern Mahratta Railway. It took nine years to complete the building. It was inaugurated on 11.12.1922.  

The central bay has two rectangular wings, both of which are arranged around a lush courtyard. The structure was built with large windows to allow the sea breeze to waft through, reaching the courtyard from the front and then going out through the opposite wing. 

31) Mysore Palace:

The Palace of Mysore (also known as the Amba Vilas Palace) is a historical palace in the city of Mysore in Karnataka, southern India. It is the official residence and seat of the Wodeyars – the Royal family of Mysore, who ruled the Princely State from 1350 to 1950.  

The palace houses two “durbar halls” (“ceremonial meeting halls of the royal court”) and has a mesmerising and gigantic array of courtyards, gardens and buildings. 

32) Jaganmohan Palace, Mysore:

Jaganmohan Palace is a palace in Mysore, India.

Its construction was completed in 1861 and was initially used by the Wodeyars, the Kings of Mysore, as their home. It has now been converted into an art gallery and a function hall. The palace is one of the seven palaces of Mysore and one of the most beautiful contributions of the Wodeyar Kings of the city during their rule. 

The palace is built in a traditional Hindu style and has three storeys. In 1900, an external façade with a hall behind it was added to the palace. This façade has three entrances and the entablature has religious motifs and miniature temples crafted on it. The walls of the interiors are painted with murals. The art gallery contains one of the largest collections of artefacts in South India.

33) Brindavan Gardens, Mysore:

Brindavan Gardens is one of the most visited places in Mysore by the locals and tourists. 

It is located about 19 km from the heart of Mysore City in the Indian State of Karnataka. These beautiful gardens are laid out below the Krishnaraja Sagar dam built across the river Cauvery. These gardens are famous for the illuminated dancing fountains that come to life after sunset. 

The best time to visit the gardens is after sunset when all the bright colourful fountains come alive and seem to dance with joy to the accompanying music.
