About the Central Bank of India:

The Central Bank of India was founded by Sir Sorabji Pochkhanawala, a visionary with a desire to start a commercial bank owned by Indians and for the Indians.

The Central Bank of India was established in 1911 and became the first Indian commercial bank which was wholly owned and managed by Indians. It is today, one of the oldest and largest commercial banks in India, with its headquarters in Bombay (present day Mumbai).

The birth of the Bank with its share-holders, Indian staff and Indian customers was the crystallisation of Sir Sorabji’s vision of setting up a truly “Swadeshi Bank” (“Indigenous Bank”).

Sir Sorabji proclaimed with pride that Central Bank was the “property of the Nation and the country’s asset” and added that the “Central Bank lived on the people’s faith and regarded itself as the people’s own bank”.

By 1918, the Central Bank of India established a branch in Hyderabad and another Branch in Secunderabad followed in 1925.

In 1923, it acquired the Tata Industrial Bank in the wake of the failure of the Alliance Bank of Shimla. The Tata Bank established in 1917, had opened a branch in Madras (present day Chennai) in 1920, which now became a branch of the Central Bank of India.

The Bank was instrumental in the creation of the first Indian Exchange Bank – “the Central Exchange Bank of India” which opened in London in 1936. This Bank was later acquired by Barclays Bank in 1938.

Before World War II, Central Bank of India established a branch in Rangoon.

After Independence, India began a new accelerated pace of development and industrialisation and there was a focus on all-round economic and social growth.

Central Bank of India played a vital role and accepted the challenges of the times and steadily diversified and widened its activities to meet the changing economic progress.

Central Bank of India had many firsts to its credit, including the introduction to the Home Savings Safe Deposit Scheme to build saving/thrift habits in all sections of the society (1921), the introduction of an Exclusive Ladies Department (1924), introducing Safe Deposit Locker facility and Rupee Traveller’s Cheques (1926), Setting up of the Executor and Trustee department (1929), Deposit Insurance Benefit Scheme (1932), Recurring Deposit Scheme (1962).

In 1963, the revolutionary government in Burma nationalised Central Bank of India’s Operations there, and the Bank became “People’s Bank No. 1” in Burma.

In 1969, the Indian Government nationalised the Central Bank of India along with 13 other Banks.

After Nationalisation the following innovative firsts have gone to Central Bank of India’s credit:

Merchant Banking Cell (1976), launching its own credit card – “Centralcard” (1980), “Platinum Jubilee Money Back Deposit Scheme” (1986), Housing Subsidiary Cent Bank Home Finance Ltd. was started with its headquarters at Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh (1989) and Quick Cheque Collection Service – (QCC) and Express Service set up for speedy collection of outstation cheques (1994) et al.

Banking with the Central Bank of India – A personal experience:

In the early nineteen-sixties when my father Late Dr. J. N. Prasad was posted as a Senior Professor at the Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, Aligarh, I remember that Aligarh was an under-banked city, the only Bank Branches that I remember were the State Bank Main Branch, an Allahabad Bank Branch and a recently opened Central Bank of India Branch at Dodhpur (there may have been more, but I was five years old then & my memory fails me).

Then one day we were pleasantly surprised when the Branch Manager of Central Bank of India, Dodhpur Branch, visited us on a deposit mobilisation campaign and persuaded my mother Late Mrs. Uma Prasad to open a Fixed Deposit account in my name under her guardianship.

My mother opened a Fixed Deposit Account of Rs.500/- , for which he immediately gave us a Fixed Deposit Receipt. He even told me that my money would “grow” in the Bank.

He even gave me a tin “Good-Luck” which was operated by a key into which I was to put away any small change which I collected and which I was to deposit in my Savings Bank account under the guardianship of my mother. Intrigued, I wondered how he would make my money “grow”, but I learnt a valuable lesson of thrift from him that day which has held me in good stead all my life. When I joined the State Bank of India in 1982, I was one of the few Probationary Officers with almost 15,000/- rupees worth of fixed deposits (a no mean sum 34 years ago) which helped me to take Early Retirement from SBI to pursue my hobbies).
I have kept the Cover for my first Fixed Deposit Receipt with the Dodhpur Branch, Aligarh of Central Bank of India as a Souvenir on which my mother has written in her hand “Rajeev Fixed Deposit”. Later she added “Lko” (short for Lucknow) as we were also banking with the Hazratganj Branch of Central Bank and where we had a locker facility as well.

Present Day:

Today it has over 4750 branches, over 5000 ATMs among other services, including overseas operations at Nairobi, Hong Kong, and a joint venture with Bank of India, Bank of Baroda and the Zambian Government. It has plans to expand operations in Singapore, Dubai, Doha and London.

The evolution of Central Bank of India is one of resilience, innovation and sheer determination to lead and to succeed in its Banking initiatives. It has presently grown into one of the largest banks in India.

True to its objectives of setting up, the Bank caters to the service needs of Indians across the country.

    1. True, Rajat. We have had a very good experience with Central Bank Managers/staff for a very long time.

    1. Yes. It was a different time. This time when I went to Lucknow last year, I found that the whole locality has changed. New shops have come up. A new generation has taken over who could not remember the people from the 1980s.

    1. Well, I was known as the "Banker of the last Resort" (like the Reserve Bank of India) for family members. Whoever borrowed money from me paid it back at a premium. Firstly, they were surprised as to how a non-earner like me could have a reserve at his disposal. When I joined the SBI, I already had fixed deposits of around Rs.15,000/-., which helped me to plan my early retirement.

    3. I do remember something of the early school days, where I got a great grounding and all my friends like you a lot. I felt great when we caught up on FB.

    1. Yes, Vikram. They were very pretty. I did carry my box around for a long time but it got lost somewhere in the transfer movements. I did manage to keep the cover in which the first Fixed Deposit was given to me, as a Souvenir. It has a different Central Bank logo on it than the present one.
