1038) The World of Bakony Dinosaurs, Magyar Posta (Hungary Post): A set of six stamps of 120 Forint each: Stamps issue date: 03.09.2018:
Magyar Posta (Hungary Post) brought out this beautiful Six Stamps set in the denominations of 120 Forints each which transport one back to about 85 million years in the history of Earth's Evolution to the Late Cretaceous Period Epoch. In these pre-historic times, planet Earth looked entirely different. The Continents had different shapes, the climate was not the same and the plants and animals inhabiting the land and the seas were most unlike present day flora and fauna. Humans were not present yet so there were no drawings or photographs and everything that we know about these animals is based on the scientific study of fossils found in rocks and skeletons of dinosaurs.
Every geological period has its characteristic organisms and living beings.
During this period represented on these stamps, the Earth was inhabited largely by Dinosaurs and their close relatives, who were the dominant species. The term/word Dinosaur means "fearfully great or terrible lizard or Reptile".
Dinosaurs ruled the Earth for 175 million years before all their species went extinct, except for birds, 66 million years ago. Between their disappearance and the appearance of man, over 300 times as much time passed than between the appearance of man and the present day.
Nevertheless, dinosaurs still continue to be popular today and are the subject of many books, films and games.
In the middle of the 19th Century, when scientists started using this name, they knew far less than we do today as this expression is not entirely accurate
While some of these beings were in fact giant animals with a frightening appearance, most
of them were the size of a human or smaller - as such they were not so terrible, not to mention the fact that dinosaurs are only distant relations of present day lizards and much closer to today's birds, with their similar habits of making a nest among other similarities.
This Miniature Sheet (MS) presents a few of the dinosaurs and ancient reptiles together with their habitat, whose fossils have been found in the Bakony Hills in Hungary.
The top row of the Miniature Sheet which bears six different stamps consists of quadrupedal herbivorous "Ajkaceratopskozmai", a small, at most, turkey-sized , probably pack-hunting "Pneumatoraptorfodori" and the dragon of the Bakony - the omnivorous flying reptile with a wingspan of about 3.5 to 4.0 metres named "Bakonydracogalaczi".
The bottom row of the Miniature Sheet depicts the 4.0 to 4.5 metre long quadrupedal herbivorous armoured dinosaur "Hungarosaurustormai", the upto 1.0 metre long short-nosed "Iharkutosuchusmakadii" which taxonomically can be placed among modern day crocodiles, and the aquatic apex predator at the time, a mosasaurus that adapted to a freshwater environment "Pannoniasaurusinexpectatus".
The special postmark shows the beak of the 1.5 metre long herbivorous "Ajkaceratopskozmai" with a small horn and a characteristic parrot-like bill.
The First Day Cover (FDC) issued on the occasion has a cancelled Mini-Sheet (MS) affixed to it. At left is seen a couple of dinosaur images in their natural habitats and flora and sea-water, as imagined during these times. The FDC is titled - "A bakonyi dinozauruszok vilaga" (in Hungarian). The Cancellation Handstamp is dated "04.09.2018".
