1281) The Declaration of Arbroath, Scotland, UK: 700th Anniversary (1320-2020) Commemoration: Four Scottish Definitive Stamps issued by the Royal Mail UK: Date of stamps issue: 06.04.2020:
The History behind these Country Definitives:
The Declaration of Arbroath on 06.04.1320, is one of the most significant documents in Scotland. It was written and endorsed by the barons and freeholders of Scotland to the Pope, asking him to recognise Scotland's independence and to acknowledge Robert the Bruce as the country's lawful King.
The Declaration was then taken to the papal court at Avignon by Bishop Kininmund, Adam Gordon and Odard de Maubuisson. The plea was successful and Scotland's independence was eventually acknowledged eight years after the Papal Bull.
To commemorate the 700th anniversary of the Declaration of Arbroath, a Commemorative Miniature Sheet (MS) is being issued containing all four Scottish Country Definitive Stamps for 2020.
The Miniature Sheet (MS) is titled "DECLARATION OF ARBROATH" and bears the four stamps issued in the set - One of First Class (Lion Rampant of Scotland), One of Second Class (The Saltire),, One of 1.42 Pounds (Thistle) and the fourth of 1.63 Pounds Tartan).
The background of the Miniature Sheet (MS) depicts the surviving Declaration itself and the 39 seals of the 8 Earls and 31 Barons who authenticated it. It is believed that at least 11 more seals than the original 39 might have been appended.
The backdrop includes the seals of Sir Ingram de Umfraville, the Earl of Lennox and Sir Roger de Moubray, that were attached to the original Declaration.
The First Day Cover (FDC) is titled "DECLARATION OF ARBROATH 1320", and features the Miniature Sheet and the Handstamp/Postmark is inspired by the document's most iconic extract, which reads - "It is in Truth not for glory, nor riches, nor honours that we are fighting, but for FREEDOM alone."
The Handstamp/Postmark, inspired by the above quotation bears the inscription - ".... for Freedom alone …..". It bears the name of the issuing authority "ROYAL MAIL" (on the upper periphery) together with the word "ARBROATH". The date of cancellation is - "06.04.2020".
The First Day Cover (FDC), shown against the backdrop of a beautifully illustrated Information Card (IC) which narrates the story of the Declaration's origins and consequences.
The description on the Information Card (IC) reads:
"Declaration of Arbroath 1320:
IT IS IN TRUTH NOT FOR GLORY, NOR RICHES, NOR HONOURS THAT WE ARE FIGHTING, BUT FOR FREEDOM ALONE ........
This is perhaps the most famous quatation from the "Declaration of Abroath" drawn up on 6 April 1320. It is in the form of a letter to Pope John XXII asking him to recognise Scotland's independence and King Robert the Bruce as the rightful King. Written in medieval Latin, the international language of diplomacy at the time, it was sealed by eight earls and about 40 barons of Scotland, though not by Bruce himself who wrote a separate letter no longer extant.
It was probably written by a royal chancery clerk in the abbey church of Arbroath. The clerk was in the employ of Bernard of Kilwinning - King Robert's Chancellor and the Abbot of Arbroath. The plea was successful, and Scotland's independence was eventually acknowledged eight years later.
The original letter taken to the pope in Avignon is now lost and the only surviving copy was damaged during the 18th century, when kept in the home of the official in charge of records.

# At the bottom are the seals of Sir Ingram de Umfraville (left), the Earl of Lennox (centre) and Sir Roger de Moubray (right) attached to the Declaration.
