"Das Glück ist ein Vogerl" ("Happiness is a Bird"):

The Austrian Mint has released on 01.12.2021 its annual New Year’s Coin which features different themes familiar in Austria.

The popular series was first issued in 2002 with Austria’s adoption of the Euro and features a motif that is either traditional or cultural. The Coins have since become a much-anticipated release.

The 2022-dated Silver and Copper Alloy Coin Variants of Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) Coin Quality feature, this year, a familiar Viennese folk song that is the focal point for the design of the New Year’s coin, which pays tribute to happiness and a traditional Viennese folk song.

"Das Glück ist ein Vogerl" (“Happiness is a bird”), so says the popular Viennese folk song with the same title written by Karl Kratzl, (1852-1904).

The metaphor is an expression of the essential truth that happiness is fleeting, fragile and hard to keep hold of.

Not that we should be discouraged, as it is this very elusiveness that makes happiness worth striving for and why we should have the strength and courage to keep pursuing it.

This message is particularly apt for the challenging times in which we are currently living. Destiny may force us to  take a rest, continues the song, which is exactly what has happened to most of us in the last couple of years, when we have had to put life on hold and be patient.

This has also forced us to appreciate the meaning of solidarity, another key message of the song. The bird on the coin doesn't have a big heart for nothing.

The Coin:

On the Reverse of the 5 Euro Silver and Copper-Alloy Coins is depicted a stylised songbird of paradise in flight, with a heart superimposed representing happiness and love.

Additional symbols of happiness surround the bird such as the sun, moon, song notes, clovers, and riches. To the lower-right is the text "S GLÜCK IS A VOGERL". At left is the year of issue: "2022".

The Obverse of the 5 Euro Silver and Copper-Alloy Coins are  depicted each of the nine cantonal Coats of Arms arranged in a circle on the value side of the nine-sided coin.

The crests are surrounded with the name of the issuing country - "REPUBLIK OSTERREICH" along with the denomination of "5 EURO". The denominational value - "5" (in the centre) with the currency name "EURO" (on the bottom periphery).
