The Bank of Greece has released new Collector Coins on the occasion of the Declaration of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) of the International Year of Artisanal Fisheries and Aquaculture (IYAFA) for 2022.
Fishing, one of man’s oldest activities, has changed significantly in recent times on account of technology and the emergence of large fishing companies.
However, millions of people all over the world still earn their living as small-scale fishers, fish farmers and fish workers.
In recognition of their contribution to meeting the world’s food needs, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) has declared 2022 the International Year of Artisanal Fisheries and Aquaculture (IYAFA 2022).
The objective of the celebration is twofold - i) to focus world attention on the role that these people play in food security, poverty eradication and sustainable natural resource use – thereby increasing global action to support them – and
ii) to encourage small-scale producers to join forces and make their voices heard in policy decision-making that affects their lives.
The acknowledgement of Artisanal Fisheries and Aquaculture is primarily to highlight the worldwide contribution of small-scale artisanal fishers and fish farmers who produce a large portion of this food consumed.
As such, the IYAFA 2022 is an opportunity to highlight the importance of the valuable contributions of these fisheries and aquaculture companies and businesses, very often a one-man operation.
For Greece:
The declaration of the IYAFA also brings media attention to Greece's food systems, supplies, livelihoods, culture, and the environment.
Greece takes part in the celebration as a country with an age-long fishing tradition and in view both of the major economic and social importance of small-scale fishing for its local populations and of the activity’s low environmental footprint.
For a country such as Greece, its history has been very closely tied to the harvest of the sea literally for more than 5000 years.
The ancient Greeks were known as sea farers and shipbuilders as well as travelling far and wide in search of a variety of fish.
Presently, the contribution of small fisheries is considerably great, with the catches not only satisfying the demand domestically but collectively, Greek fishermen exports over 200,000 tonnes of fish products annually, earning around one billion dollars in revenue.
The Coin:
The silver Proof-quality coins have been minted by the Bank of Greece’s own minting facilities in Athens.
On the Reverse of the €6 (Six Euro) Silver Coin is depicted an ancient fresco found in Akrotiri.
Referred to as "The Young fisherman with his catch", it was painted in 1650 BC and discovered by archaeologists who recovered this fresco in the Cyclades on the volcanic island of Santorini.
This well-preserved painting shows a nude male fisherman holding his abundant catch of the day in both hands.
To the left of the fisherman are engraved the year of issue "2022" and the distinctive stylised "palmette mintmark" of the Greek Mint.
Below the primary design is the inscription "ΔΙΕΘΝΕΣ ΕΤΟΣ ΠΑΡΑΔΟΣΙΑΚΗΣ ΑΛΙΕΙΑΣ ΚΑΙ ΥΔΑΤΟΚΑΛΛΙΕΡΓΕΙΑΣ" (“International Year of Traditional Fisheries and Aquaculture”).
On the Obverse of the €6 (Six Euro) Silver Coin is depicted a stylised collage of shapes representing a school of fish swimming in one direction.
Above the primary design is the text "ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΉ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΊΑ" (“Hellenic Republic”) and to the left is the Hellenic crest framed by olive branches.
The denomination of "6 EYPΩ" (“6 Euro”) is shown below along the lower edge.
