258) "Vibrant India": Commemorative postage stamps issued by India Post on this theme on 25.01.2016:

About India:

India is one of the oldest civilisations in the world with a varied and rich cultural heritage.

During the last 67 years of its Independence, India has achieved all round socio-economic progress.

Geographically:

Lying entirely in the Northern Hemisphere, the mainland measures about 3,214 km from North to South between its extreme locations and it has a land frontier of about 15,200 km. The total length of the coastline of the mainland, Lakshadweep Islands and Andaman & Nicobar Islands is about 7,517 km.

The Indian Peninsula is separated from Mainland Asia by the Himalayas. The country is surrounded by the Bay of Bengal in the East, the Arabian Sea in the West and the Indian Ocean in the South.

The mainland comprises of four regions viz. the great Mountain Zone, Plains of the Ganga and the Indus, the Desert region and the Southern Peninsula. Natural Resources such as lakes, rivers, forests, wildlife etc. have a vital role to play in Indian lifestyles.

Present concerns & initiatives:

The growing population has, however, been adding pressure on the environment. As a result, the country faces numerous challenges and concerns in implementing policies and programmes targeted at conservation of the eco-system, natural resources (“Clean the Ganga” initiative, using Solar energy for cooking, electricity, fuel etc.), welfare of animals (preventing “slaughter of cows”), prevention of pollution (controlling vehicular traffic through increasing public transport including Metro trains, Commuter trains and buses, car pools etc.),  keeping the country clean (“Swachh Bharat” initiative) and numerous other programmes initiated by the present Government and Organisations for conservation and protection of flora and fauna, forest and wildlife.

Cultural Diversity:

Culture plays an important role in the development of a Nation. It represents shared attitudes, values, goals and practices.  Culture and creativity manifest themselves in almost all economic, social and other activities. A country as diverse as India is symbolised by the plurality of its culture.

India has the World’s largest collections of songs, music, dance, theatre, folk traditions, performing arts, rites and rituals, paintings, writings and festivals etc. that are known as the “Intangible Cultural Heritage(ICH) of humanity. In order to preserve and promote these elements, the Indian Government has been implementing a number of schemes and programmes aimed at providing financial support to individuals, groups and cultural organisations engaged in performing, visual and literary arts etc.

Education:

The essence of Human Resources Development (HRD) is education, which plays a significant and remedial role in balancing the socio-economic framework of the country.

Rising to this challenge, the country has been taking new and far reaching initiatives in the field of Elementary, Secondary, Higher secondary, Higher, Technical and Adult Education. There is now a growing emphasis on vocational training in the country so as to focus on overall development and creating a skilled work-force under the “Skill India” initiative of the present Government.

The new initiative of the present Government “Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao” (meaning “Save the Girl Child, Educate the Girl Child” aims at removing gender inequality in the matter of education and helping more and more girls to aspire into becoming career women through education in various fields.

Agriculture with its allied sectors:

Agriculture with its allied sectors is the largest livelihood provider in India, more so in the rural areas. It also contributes significantly to the Gross Domestic Product GDP). It is recognised that sustainable agriculture, in terms of food security, rural employment and environmentally sustainable technologies such as soil conservation, sustainable natural resource management and bio-diversity protection are essential for a holistic rural development and numerous initiatives have been taken in the country in this regard. Small savings schemes for the rural masses like the “Jan Dhan Yojana” (meaning “Public Wealth Scheme”) has seen over Rupees 15,000,00,00,000 (or Rs.15000 crores) being tapped from the rural areas through the Banking channels.

Over the decades Indian Agriculture and Allied activities have witnessed a Green Revolution (In 1961, India was on the brink of mass famine. Dr, Norman Borlaug advised the then Indian Minister of Agriculture Shri C. Subramanian to help India try out new crops, heralding India’s own Green revolution programme of plant breeding, irrigation development and financing of agro-chemicals. The programme helped India gain self-sufficiency in food produce and even become a major exporter of food products), a White Revolution (Operation Flood launched in 1970 is a project of the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) which was the world’s biggest dairy development programme that made India turn from a milk-deficient Nation into the World’s largest milk producer, surpassing even the USA in 1998. The AMUL experiment, in which a single cooperative dairy founded by Dr. Varghese Kurien, gave the necessary thrust to this programme using his professional management skills. He is recognised as its architect. The AMUL Programme is still providing milk and milk products at highly competitive rates across India) a Yellow Revolution (The growth, development and adoption of new varieties of oilseeds and complementary technologies nearly doubled oilseeds production in 1997-97 from its levels about a decade ago) and a Blue Revolution (started in 1970 it involves the adoption of package programmes to increase the production of fish and marine products).

Creating infrastructure and stress on Renewable Energy Resources:

Infrastructure is a major sector that propels overall development of the Indian economy. The Government has initiated policies and programmes that would ensure time-bound creation of world class infrastructure in the country. These initiatives focus on power, bridges, dams, roads and urban infrastructure development. Power and Energy are recognised as two essential inputs for economic development and improving the quality of life in India.

Development of both conventional and non-conventional forms of energy for meeting the growing energy needs of Society at a reasonable cost is the focus.

Special initiatives are being implemented for promoting the use of non-conventional, alternate, new and Renewable Sources of Energy such as Solar (the “Group of 100 Sunshine Countries”, recently formed through India’s initiative is a case in point), wind and bio-energy etc.

The “Make in India” initiative has received tremendous response from across the World, particularly India based entrepreneurs and entrepreneurs of Indian Origin who are keen on taking advantage of the new investment opportunities being provided in India for setting up profitable world class infrastructure and industries.

Developments in Science and Technology:

Science and Technology have always been an integral part of Indian culture. Natural philosophy, as it was termed in ancient times, was pursued vigorously at institutions of higher learning. The Indian Renaissance, over the past few decades has witnessed great strides taken by Indian scientists and the Institutions set up for the purpose. There is a great effort in setting up modern state of the Art, Science and Technology infrastructure in the country. Giant strides have been taken in scientific education and scientific research and development as a result of all these initiatives.

Organisations like ISRO (Indian Space & Research Organisation), DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organisation) are poised to take India to greater heights. The “Mars Orbiter Mission” (MOM Project) spearheaded and conceived by ISRO Scientists successfully placed the “Mangalyaan” (meaning the “Martian craft”) in Mars orbit in its first attempt, while the “Chandrayaan” (Moon Craft) Project succeeded in discovering water on the Earth’s moon for the first time. “Chandrayaan II” is in the pipeline which plans to put a lunar orbiter, a lander and a lunar rover all developed by India on the moon by 2018. India is now focussing on developing state of the art weapons and weapons systems for the country’s defence.

Some other areas where India is pursuing initiatives vigorously:

The “Digital India” initiative launched recently by the Indian Government aims at making the population computer literate and use online resources like internet banking, payments of monthly telephone, mobile, electricity, property tax, income tax bills etc from the convenience of their homes. Every Central Government Ministry has gone online and people can reach out to them with their issues online. Deadlines have been put in place for the Government Departments/ministries for addressing citizen related issues once they are brought to the notice of a specific department/ministry.

Social Security has been given an impetus with Accidental  Insurance schemes, Life Insurance and Pension schemes (like the “Atal Pension Yojana), being operated out of already opened bank accounts at very nominal charges to cover the rural masses and Indian citizens in general.

The Prime Minister of India now reaches out to the masses over mass media channels like the Radio at regular intervals under the “Maan ki Baat” (meaning “Speaking One’s Mind”) on issues and initiatives being launched by the Indian Government inviting suggestions from the public at large.

Commemorative stamp brought out by the Department of Posts on the theme of “Vibrant India” in January 2016:

India Post organised a nation-wide competition inviting entries for designing the Commemorative Souvenir Sheet, First Day Cover (FDC) and Brochure on the theme of “Vibrant India”.
