Brief Description of the two Special Covers released on 18.01.2016):

i)           Special Cover on “Nashik Dhol”:

Nashik has a rich and long cultural history. It is, inter alia, specially associated with the highly celebrated Nashik Dhol, a special form of rhythmic music played on big drums known as “Dhols”. The Dhol is a double-sided barrel drum played mostly as an accompanying instrument in Regional music forms. The Dhol is made up of two stretched membranes tied by strong strings. One side of the dhol is played by a wooden stick called “Tiparu” and this side is called the “Dhum” (or “Base”), while the other side is called the “Thapi” or “Chati” (or “Tremor”) and is played only by the palm.

The Nashik Dhol encompasses several other musical instruments like “Tashas”, “Zanzars”, Electrical “Bul-Bul” or the Electronic Piano.

Nashik Dhol has got eminence all over India and Maharashtra in particular where it is used in all Public celebrations, Weddings, Festivals, Rallies, College gatherings etc.

All over Maharashtra, several “Dhol Pathaks” (meaning “Troupes”) form during the Ganpati festival season and other occasions.

ii)         Special Cover on “Dr. Anandi Gopalrao Joshi” (31.03.1865-26.-2.1887):

She was one of the first South Asian woman physicians and the first Indian woman physician to be trained in the tradition of Western Medicine. She studied and graduated with a degree in Medicine in the USA. She was married to Gopalrao, belonging to an orthodox Brahmin family, who worked as a postal clerk in Kalyan.

The circumstances leading to her decision to become a Doctor of Medicine:

At the age of 14, she gave birth to a baby boy who survived for only 10 days. This loss inspired her to become a physician, a career in which Gopalrao helped her whole-heartedly.

The obstacles, including religious ones:

Initially, Gopalrao wrote a letter to Royal Wilder, a well-known American missionary, requesting for his help in getting Anandibai to study Medicine and for himself to get suitable employment there to help her with her doctoral studies, but Wilder offered to help them only if they converted to Christianity. The Joshis could not very well accept this conditional offer of help and declined.

Somehow this correspondence got published in the “Princeton’s Missionary Review” and an American lady, Theodicia Carpenter, happened to come across it and moved by Anandibai’s story, wrote to her, offering her accommodation in the USA. What followed was an exchange of several letters in which Hindu culture and religion was, inter alia discussed several times.

Thereafter, Anandibai fell ill and Theodicia sent several medicines for her from the USA.

Facing up to adversity and obstacles with a firm determination:

In 1883, despite her poor health, Gopalrao decided to send her by herself to the USA, as both of them were convinced that this would set an example for other Indian women to pursue higher education and careers of their own.  Despite being strongly censured by Hindu Society, she applied to the Women’s Medical College of Pennsylvania. Several Christians supported her decision but refused to help her in any way, unless she converted to Christianity.

She addressed the Hindu Community in a congregation at Serampore College, explaining her decision to go and spoke about the persecution she and her husband had endured. She stressed the need for Hindu female doctors in India and talked about her goal of opening a Medical college for Women in India. She also pledged that she would not convert to Christianity.

Her speech and her determination to pursue a medical career were publicly acclaimed and financial contributions started coming from all over India. The Viceroy of India contributed Rs.200/- towards her Medical Education fund.

Pursuing a Professional course in the USA:

In June 1883, on her arrival in the USA, Theodicia Carpenter received her. She got admission in medical programme at the Women’s Medical College of Pennsylvania, which was the first women’s medical programme in the World.

Her declining health worsened in the cold weather and unfamiliar diet and she contracted tuberculosis. Despite her ill health, she graduated with an MD on 11.03.1886. On her graduation, Queen Victoria sent her a congratulatory message.

In 1886, she returned to India, where she was feted. The Princely State of Kolhapur appointed her as the Physician – in – Charge of the Female Ward of the local Albert Edward Hospital.

On 26.02.1887, she passed away before she had turned 22 years of age. Her death was mourned throughout India and her ashes were sent to Theodicia Carpenter who placed them in her family cemetery in Poughkeepsie, New York.

Her Legacy:

She was the first Hindu woman to set foot on American soil to study for pursuing higher professional studies. She blazed trail for other Indian women to follow.

In 1888, Caroline Wells Healey Dall wrote a biography on her.

Doordarshan aired a Serial on her titled “Anandi Gopal”.

Srikrishna Janardhan Joshi wrote a fictionalised account of her life in his Marathi novel “Anandi Gopal”.

The Government of Maharashtra set up a fellowship in her name for young women working on women’s health.

The Institute for Research and Documentation in Social Sciences (IRDS), Lucknow has set up an award titled “Anandibai Joshi Award for Medicine” in recognition of her early contributions to advance the cause of Medical Science in India.
