MAHAPEX – 2016:

The 12th Philatelic Exhibition of Maharashtra Circle, MAHAPEX – 2016 was held from 16.01.2016 to 18.01.2016 at Nashik. Tradition, culture and modernity were reflected in the Exhibition through about 400 exhibition frames, stalls of various dealers and cultural activities.

On the first day of the Exhibition (i.e. 16.01.2016), two Special Covers were released followed by two each on the following two days (i.e. on 17.01.2016 & 18.01 2016).

Brief Description of the two Special Covers released on 16.01.2016):

i) Special Cover on “Pandav Leni” Caves:

Location & the period when they were built:

Pandav Leni Caves (“Leni” in Marathi means “Caves”) are a group of 24 Hinayana Buddhist Caves located about 8 km south of Nasik. These Caves are situated on a small hillock and are cut half way through the hillock at a height of about 300 feet from the base of the hillock. The Caves were built over an extended period of time starting from the 3rd Century BC to 4th Century AD, initially by Jain Kings, but later by Buddhist followers of the Hinayana Faith/Sect.

The rock cut caves were started as a Jain place of congregation and meditation, but were later converted into a Buddhist monastery which developed into a significant Buddhist Centre. These caves were a popular meeting place – Congregation Centre – for the disciples of Lord Buddha. Water tanks have been skilfully carved out into the rocks for storing drinking/bathing water.

How did the Caves get their name:

These Caves, as such, are over 2000 years old and are so named because they are situated in the hills of Pandav Leni. The ancient name of the location of these caves was “Trirashmi” (meaning the “Triple Royal”), while the name Pandav Leni is of more recent origin. The Caves are also called “Pundru” which in Pali language – the language spoken by the Buddha – means “yellow ochre colour” (derived from the dwellings/shelters of Buddhist monks who wore the “Chivara” or the “yellow robes”).

Still later the name “Pundru” was distorted to “Pandu Caves” and, as time passed, they came to be known as “Pandav Caves”.

The Idols/Sculptures:

Hinayana Buddhists worshipped Buddha in a symbolic form.

The images of Buddha carved out in some of the caves are later additions carried out by followers of the Mahayana faith of Buddhism in the 4th to 6th Century AD. As the caves were inhabited by both the Hinayana as well as the Mahayana Sects at different periods of time, there is an amalgamation/confluence of structure and carvings of both beliefs.

The idols/sculptures engraved in these Caves are chiefly of Jain Teerthankar Vrishabhdeo, Buddha and icons of Bodhisattva – Veer Manibhadraji and Ambikadevi.

The Inscriptions:

The several inscriptions in Pali language attest to the fact that Nasik was ruled during the period these Caves were sculpted by three dynasties – the Kshatraps, Satyavahans and the Abhirs. There was always a conflict between the Satyavahans and the Kshatraps over suzerainty of these territories. Nevertheless, all these 3 Dynasties encouraged Buddhism although they did not practice Buddhism on their own in toto. The inscriptions also attest to the fact that apart from the Kings, local merchants, landlords and well to do officials supported and donated huge sums for the making of these cave structures.

Inscriptions in Cave nos. 3, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 18, 19 and 20 are legible.

All the Caves except Cave no. 18 are “Vihars”. (“Vihars” are referred to dwellings or shelters used by wandering monks during the rains).

Cave number 18 is a “Chaitya” (Chaityas are “Buddhist or Jain halls of Congregation” which also have a Stupa).

It is the oldest and most important cave and has beautiful carvings and it also has a beautiful Stupa. According to the inscription engraved on the 5th and 6th pillars, this Chaitya was developed by Bhattapalika, the wife of the Royal Officer Aghetyana and daughter of the Royal Officer Arahataya. Another inscription under the horse shoe arch of the entrance records the gift of a village by the inhabitants of Nasik for the upkeep of the Chaitya.

Cave number 3 was excavated at the instance of the mother of the famous Satyavahan King Gautamiputra Satkarni, who ruled a large part of the Deccan in the 2nd Century AD.

In Cave number 10, or “Nahapana Vihar”, there is an inscription mentioning that in 105-106 BC, the Ksatrapas defeated the Satyavahans after which the son-in-law of Kshatrap Nahapana and Dinika’s son Usabhdatta donated 3000 gold coins for the excavation of this cave as well as for food and clothing for the monks. Usabhdatta’s wife (Nahapana’s daughter), Dakshmitra also donated one cave for the Buddhist monks. Cave no. 10 is complete in all structural aspects.

Cave number 15 has a “Sri Yajna Vihar” inscription which mentions Sri Yajna Satkarni, the last Satyavahan King who ruled over Western Maharashtra.

In Cave no. 17 there is an inscription stating that a “Yavana” (or a “Greek”) named Indragnidatta and his son Dharmarakshit excavated this vihar and got installed a shrine and cisterns.

Cave no.20, first taken by an ascetic name Bhopaki was completed by Vasu, the wife of Mahasenapati Bhavagopa in the 7th year of the Satyavahan King Gautamiputra Yajnashri Satkarni (166-198 AD).

The most important caves are Cave nos. 18 and 20.
