Sukhna Lake:
In 1958, Sukhna
Lake was constructed and is a 3 sq. km rainfed lake water reservoir at the
foothills of the Himalayas, the Shivalik hills.
During the sixties and
early seventies, the rate of siltation of the Lake was very high due to
soil erosion from its catchment area.
Till the 1980s almost two-thirds of the
original water holding capacity of the Lake was lost due to siltation.
Soil and water
conservation measures have resulted in excellent results and reduced the rate
of siltation considerably. Soil Conservation measures supplemented with massive
afforestation have also led to the
development of a good forest cover in the hilly catchment area which is now an
ideal habitat for a wide variety of fauna leading to this area being designated
as the “Sukhna Wildlife Sanctuary”.
Sanctuary for Migratory
& Resident Birds:
Sukhna is a Sanctuary for
many exotic migratory birds like the Siberian Duck, Storks and Cranes during
the winter months. The Lake has been declared as a Protected National Wetland
by the Government of India.
With the onset of
winters, regular migratory birds flock to the Sukhna Lake including, Ruddy
Shelducks, White-Eyed Pochards, Common Pochards, Ferruginous Pochards, Tufted
Ducks, Greylag Geese, Bar Headed Geese, Gadwals, Northern Shovelers, , Northern
Pintails, Pied Avocet, Greenshank, Spotted Redshank, Common Redshank,
Temminck’s Stint, Little Stint Black-Winged Stilt et al. The migratory birds
come to the Sukhna Lake from places like Afghanistan, Siberia, Central Asia,
China and the upper Himalayas around mid-November and stay till about March or
April.
In
addition, more than 262 resident varieties of birds are found in the Sanctuary,
including, aquatic birds. Prominent among them are : Indian Peacock, Red Jungle
Fowl, Grey Partridge, Cuckoos, Night Jars, Golden Oriole, Kingfisher, Swifts,
Hoopoes, Hornbills, Barbets, Woodpeckers, Rollers, Barn Owl, Parrots, Doves,
Jacanas, Plovers, Coots, Hawks, Geese, Swan, Ducks et al.
In December 2014, there
was an Avian Influenza or “Bird Flu” which led to a temporary closure of the
Lake premises. This scare was started after some migrant Geese were found dead
in the Lake. After necessary steps to stem the problem like quarantining the
Lake and its surrounding areas and restricting the movement of Ducks, Geese and
Poultry within a kilometre radius, several domesticated geese were culled and
the problem was resolved. The root cause of the Bird Flu however, still
remains a mystery.
Every effort is made to protect, preserve and
propagate the wildlife of the area by creating habitats and promoting water
facilities etc.
1) Black-winged Stilt or
Pied stilt or Common Stilt (Himantopus himantopus):
An image of a Black-winged Stilt
The Black-winged Stilt is
a long-legged wader in the Avocet and Stilt family (Recurvirostridae).
Its scientific name “Himantopus” in Greek means “strap foot” or “thong
foot”.
The adult birds are about
33 to 36 cm (or 13-14 inches) long. They have pink legs, a long thin black bill
and are black above and white below, with a white head and neck with a varying
amount of black. Males have a black back often with greenish gloss, while
females have a brown hue on the back contrasting with the black remiges (flight
feathers). Immature birds are grey, instead of black.
Their distribution is
wide-spread ranging from West Europe, Mediterranean region, Central Asia,
sub-Saharan Africa, Madagascar, South and South East Asia, East Asia. It is a
winter migrant although some populations in warmer regions are residents or
short range vagrants.
Stilts breed in marshes,
shallow lakes and ponds.
The International Union
for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has placed the Black-winged Stilt in the
Conservation Category of “Least Concern”.
2) Bar-headed Goose
(Anser indicus):
The Bar-headed Goose
breeds in Central Asia in mountain lakes and is a winter migrant to South Asia
as far South as the Indian Peninsula.
The bird is pale grey and
is easily identified by the presence of black bars on its head. A mid-sized goose,
it measures about 71 to 76 co (or 28-30 inches) in it total length and weighs
about 1.87 to 3.2 kg. Bar-headed Geese have a slightly larger wing area for
their weight which helps them to fly at height altitudes. It is one of the
highest flying birds and is capable of crossing even Mount Everest, the highest
mountain in the world, with a height of 29,029 feet or 8848 metres.
The summer habitat of the
Bar-headed Goose is high altitude lakes where it grazes on short grass. They
nest mainly on the Tibetan Plateau.
The Bar-headed Goose
migrates over the Himalayas to spend the winters in parts of South Asia from
North Indian States like Punjab, down to the Southern States like Tamil Nadu
and to the Eastern States like Assam. During winters, they can also be found in
cultivated fields, feeding on barley, rice and wheat.
3) Pied Avocet or
Black capped Avocet or Eurasian Avocet (Recurvirostra avosetta):
The above is an image of a Pied Avocet

large black and white wader belonging to the Avocet and Stilt family Recurvirostridae.
The species derives its name from its English and scientific names from the
Venetian name “Avosetta” and in English which refers to the black and
white dress worn by European advocates.
It is a striking white
wader with bold black markings. Adults have white plumage except for a black
cap and black patches in the wings and on the back. They have long, upturned
bills and long bluish legs.
The length of the bird is
16.5 to 17.75 inches or 41.9 cm to 45.1 com in length of which the bill is
about 2.95 to 3.35 inches or 7.5 to 8.5 cm. The legs are about 3 to 4 inches or
7.6 cm to 10.2 cm. The wingspan is about 30 to 31.5 inches or 76 to 80 cm.
It breeds mainly in
temperate Europe and Western and Central Asia in shallow lakes with brackish or
muddy waters and nest on open ground often in small groups or with other waders.
It is a winter migrant
preferring to winter in Africa or Southern Asia.
4) Northern Shoveler
(Anas clypeata):
An image of a Northern Shoveler - Female

a common and wide-spread duck, breeding in the Northern areas on Europe and
Asia and across most of North America. It is a winter migrant to Southern
Europe, Africa, the Indian sub-continent, South-East Asia and Central and
Northern South America, the Malay Archipelago and sometimes to Australia. The International
Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) designated conservation status of this
bird is of “Least Concern”.
The birds are about 48 cm
or 19 inches in length and have a wing-span of 76 cm or 30 inches and weigh
about 600 gms. Despite their stout appearance, Shovelers are nimble fliers.
Northern Shovelers feed
on plant food using their bills to strain food from the water feeding on
aquatic invertebrates, crustaceans and plankton. They nest in grassy areas away
from open water and make nests in shallow depressions on the ground lining them
with plant material and down.
