327) "Surya Namaskar": the theme of  Second International Day of Yoga (21.06.2016): A  set of 12 postage stamps brought out depicting the twenty four postures of “Surya Namaskar” (“Salutation" or "Greeting the Sun”) by the Department of Posts, India on 21.06.2016:

(Last year I had put up a comprehensive post on the commemorative coins and postage stamps released on International Yoga Day – 21.06.2015, link to which is as follows:  International Day of Yoga 2015: Commemorative coins and postage stamps issued )

Yoga is an ancient Indian form of exercising for staying fit, active, healthy and energized through its practice.

The Sanskrit name “Surya” refers to the “Sun” and “Namaskar” means “Salutation”.

In Yoga, the Sun is represented by “Pingala” or “Surya Nadi”, the “Pranic” channel which carries the vital, life-giving force. “Surya Namaskar” has a direct vitalising effect on the solar energy of the body which flows through the “Pingala Nadi”.

Regular practice of “Surya Namaskar” regulates “Pingala Nadi”, whether it is under-active or over-active, which leads to a balanced energy system at both mental and physical levels.

Surya Namaskar” is an effective way of loosening up, stretching, massaging and toning all the joints, muscles and internal organs of the body.
A set of Commemorative stamps brought out by the Department of Posts, India:

The Department of Posts, India has brought out a set of Commemorative Postage stamps depicting the various Asanas of “Surya Namaskar” on the occasion of International Yoga Day on 21.06.2016.

I am illustrating below the different postures of the “Surya Namaskar” (“Salutation" or "Greeting the Sun”) exercise through twelve Indian Postage stamps which have been released today (21.06.2016) among other collectibles by India Post:
This Miniature Sheet of Indian postage stamps depicts the 12 postures of the "Surya Namaskar" exercise (which form half of the Surya Namaskar exercise).
The Full Sheet of 24 Stamps depicting the 24 postures of the "Surya Namaskar" exercise (which form  the entire Surya Namaskar exercise).
The First Day Cover (FDC) issued on the occasion shows the 12 stamps depicting the different postures of the "Surya Namaskar" exercise. The stamps have been cancelled by four coloured Cancellations depicting the logo of the International Yoga day together with the inscription "Surya Namaskar" (in both Hindi & English). The date of cancellation is "20.06.2016". (Does this qualify this FDC Cancellation as an "error cancellation"? On the lower left are stylised images of a Yoga practitioner performing the exercise around the Sun.
The above is the Information Brochure issued on the occasion. The image shows the Sun rising from behind the mountains, with golden coloured clouds overhead.

The set of 24 exercises which comprise the Surya Namaskar composite exercise:

"Pranama Asana". (This is the first posture of "Surya Namaskar"). This full sheet contains 45 stamps of Rs.5/- denomination each)

Position or Posture 1: “Pranam Asana” (prayer pose): Stand with the feet together or slightly apart, and the arms hanging loosely by the side of the body. Close the eyes gently and become aware of the whole physical body as one homogeneous unit. In this position the body may sway from side to side or backward and forward. Try to minimize the oscillation and balance the body weight equally on both feet. Slowly bend the elbows and place the palms together in front of the chest in “Namaskar Mudra”, mentally offering homage to the Sun, the source of all life on Earth. The awareness may be kept on the chest area.

"Hastautta Asana" (This is the second posture of "Surya Namaskar". This full sheet contains 45 stamps of Rs.5/- denomination each)

Position 2: “Hastauttan Asana” (raised arms pose): Raise and stretch both arms above the head. Keep the arms separated, shoulder width apart. Bend the head, arms and upper trunk backwards. The awareness may be kept on the stretch of the abdomen and expansion of the lungs.

At the same time, bend the left knee, keeping the left foot on the floor in the same position. Keep the arms straight. In the final position, the weight of the body should be supported on the hands, the left foot, right knee and toes of the right foot. The head should be tilted backwards, the back arched and the inner gaze directed upwards to the eyebrow centre. The awareness may be kept on the stretch from the thigh to the chest or on the eyebrow centre.
"Parvat Asana" (this stamp depicts the fifth posture of "Surya Namaskar". This full sheet contains 45 stamps of Rs.5/- denomination each)

Position 5: “Parvat Asana” (mountain pose): Take the left foot back beside the right foot. Simultaneously, raise the buttocks and lower the head between the arms, so that the back and legs form two sides of a triangle. The legs and arms should be straight in the final position. Try to keep the heels on the floor in the final pose and bring the head towards the knees. Do not strain. The awareness may be kept on relaxing the hips or on the throat region.

"Ashtang Namaskar" (this stamp depicts the sixth posture of "Surya Namaskar".This full sheet contains 45 stamps of Rs.5/- denomination each)

Position 6: “Ashtang Namaskara” (salute with eight parts): Lower the knees, chest and chin to the floor. In the final position only the toes, knees, chest, hands and chin touch the floor. The knees, chest and chin should touch the floor simultaneously. It this is not possible, first lower the knees, then the chest and finally the chin. The buttocks, hips and abdomen should be raised. The awareness may be kept on the abdominal region.

"Bhujang Asana" (this stamp depicts the seventh posture of "Surya Namaskar". This full sheet contains 45 stamps of Rs.25/- denomination each).

Position 7: “Bhujang Asana” (cobra pose): Lower the buttocks and hips to the floor, straightening the elbows, arch the back and push the chest forward into the cobra pose. Bend the head back and direct the gaze upwards to the eyebrow centre. The thighs and hips remain on the floor and the arms support the trunk. Unless the spine is very flexible, the arms will remain slightly bent. The awareness may be kept on relaxation of the spine.
"Parvat Asana" (this stamp depicts the eighth posture of "Surya Namaskar". This full sheet contains 45 stamps of Rs.25/- denomination each).

Position 8: “Parvat Asana”: (mountain pose): This stage is a repeat of position 5. From Bhujang Asana assume Parvat Asana. The hands and feet do not move from position 7. The awareness may be kept on relaxing the hips or on the throat region.

Position 9: “Asvasanchalan Asana” (equestrian pose): This stage is the same position as position 4. Keep the palms flat on the floor. Tilt the head backwards, arch the back and gaze at the eyebrow centre. The awareness may be kept on the stretch from the thigh to the chest, or on the eyebrow centre.
"Padahast Asana" (this stamp depicts the tenth posture of "Surya Namaskar". This full sheet contains 45 stamps of Rs.25/- denomination each)

Position 10: “Padahast Asana” (hand to foot pose): This position is a repeat of position 3. Bring the right foot forward next to the left foot, straighten both knees. Bring the forehead as close to the knees as possible without straining. The awareness may be kept on the pelvic region.
"Hastautta Asana" (This is the eleventh posture of "Surya Namaskar". This full sheet contains 45 stamps of Rs.25/- denomination each)

Position 11: Hastauttan Asana” (raised arms pose): This stage is a repeat of position 2. Raise the torso and stretch the arms above the head. Keep the arms separated, shoulder width apart. Bend the head, arms and upper trunk backwards. The awareness may be kept on the stretch of the abdomen and expansion of the lungs.
"Pranama Asana". (This is the twelfth and last posture of "Surya Namaskar"). This full sheet contains 45 stamps of Rs.25/- denomination each).

Position 12: “Pranam Asana” (prayer pose): This is the final position and is the same as position 1. Bring the palms together in front of the chest. The awareness may be kept on the region of the heart.

The 12 positions of “Surya Namaskar” are practiced twice to complete one round. Positions 1 to 12 constitute half a round. In the second half, the positions are repeated with two small changes:

 a) In position 16, instead of stretching the right foot backwards, stretch the left foot back.

b) In position 21, bend the right leg and bring the right foot between the hands.

The Practice:

The ideal time to practice “Surya Namaskar” is at sunrise, the most peaceful time of the day. Whenever possible, practice in the open air, facing the rising sun. Sunset is also a good time to practice as it stimulates the digestive fire.

Surya Namaskar”, however, may be practiced at any time provided the stomach is empty. “Surya Namaskar” is ideally practiced before other Asanas. After completing “Surya Namaskar”, practice “Shav Asana” fir a few minutes. This will allow the heartbeat and respiration to return to normal and all the muscles to relax.

Surya Namaskar is a complete “Sadhana” (spiritual practice) in itself for it includes “Asana”, “Pranayama”, “Mantra” and Meditation techniques. It stimulates all the systems of the body, including reproductive, circulatory, respiratory and digestive systems. Its practice makes the practitioner physically fit, mentally alert and emotionally balanced. “Surya Namaskar” is the ideal practice to increase awareness and bestow good health and well-being.

    1. This Full sheet of stamps is only one out of 25,000 printed which contains all the 24 postures. I managed to get this one. The others are Miniature sheets containing only 12 postures, which again has been printed at 100,000 sheets which is a very small number, just to keep these stamps "exclusive".
