The category of Least Developed Countries (LDC) was established by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) to promote special international support for the most vulnerable and disadvantaged members of the United Nations family.
About the LDC category:
The Least Developed Country (LDC) category was established by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in 1971.
Least developed countries (LDCs) are low-income countries confronting severe structural impediments to sustainable development.
They are highly vulnerable to economic and environmental shocks and have low levels of human assets.
LDCs have exclusive access to certain international support measures in particular in the areas of development assistance and trade.
There are currently 47 countries presently on the list of LDCs which is reviewed every three years by the Committee for Development (CDP).
The list is dynamic, and some countries leave (“graduate from”) the category or join it.
Of the 47 countries - 33 of the LDCs are in Africa, 13 in Asia and the Pacific and one in Latin America.
Over one billion people live in these countries – comprising about 13 per cent of world population – but their economies account for less than 2 per cent of the world’s GDP and less than 1 per cent of global trade.
International support measures (ISMs) have been put in place for LDCs in the areas of trade, financial and technical assistance, and support for participation in international forums.
As more countries approach "graduation", there has been increasing emphasis in securing support for a smooth transition out of the category.
A dedicated portal contains information on these international support measures, as well as a repository of documents on LDCs, news and information on events on LDCs and information on organizations supporting LDCs.
The mission of the Office of the High Representative for Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States (OHRLLS) is to raise awareness about the economic, social and environmental potential that exist in these countries.
They aim to ensure that the pressing needs of the 1.1 billion people who live in those countries remain high on the international agenda.

The 5th United Nations Conference on the Least Developed Countries (LDC5) was held in Doha, Qatar from 05 to 09.03.2023 putting the needs of the most vulnerable people back into focus.
Investment in these young vibrant countries will help drive sustainable growth for generations.
