971) 100 Levs Banknote from Bulgaria wins the prestigious Regional Banknote of the Year Award, 2019:
The 100 Lev Banknote is the first Banknote issued from the new Bulgarian Banknote Series, which was put into circulation on 08.12.2018. This Banknote has won the Award for "Regional Banknote of the Year" at the High Security Printing EMEA in Malta.
The Award recognises "outstanding achievements in the design, technical sophistication and security of a Banknote or Banknote Series."
The Banknote won the Award for its "brilliant, beautiful and dynamic security features which correspond perfectly with each other and encourage the public to authenticate the Note at first sight." The paper-embedded security features - the thread, the foil and the watermark - were supplied by Louisenthal, a subsidiary of Giesecke & Devrient Currency Technology GmBH.
The Bulgarian National Bank has got a reputation for innovation in Banknotes, having been the first adopter of a number of new security features in the past. The 100 Leva Banknote is a fine example of this meticulous innovative spirit.
The Front of the 100 Levs Banknote from Bulgaria portrays Aleko Konstantinov - a Bulgarian writer, publicist, lawyer, translator, democrat and social activist.
The 100 Levs Banknote is equipped with tactile features for the visually impaired - five thick and six diagonal lines along the margins on the Front.
The Back of the 100 Levs Banknote is dedicated to the life and work of Aleko Konstantinov, like the Front of this Banknote.
Some of the State-of-the-Art security features exhibited by this Banknote include a whole range of newly introduced features:
- The Front of the Banknote shows a dynamic RollingStar "R" LEAD Stripe, with a "rectangular checkered field" (like a moving chess-board/dynamic chess effect). The colour changes from emerald green to sapphire blue when the Banknote is tilted. This RollingStar "R" LEAD Stripe synchronises with the three-dimensional image of the denominational value "100".
- The Back of the Banknote features a RollingStar "R" security thread with the same dynamic chess effect and again with a colour-shift from emerald green to sapphire blue when the Banknote is tilted. The micro-text "BNB 100" is visible on either side.
- The Banknote also contains paper-embedded security fibres - new tri-coloured security fibres in white, green, red - which are visible under UV light.
- There is also the SPARK "R" Live feature from SICPA.
- A three-dimensional water-mark portrait of Aleko Konstantinov combined with the highlight inscription "BNB" is visible on both sides in transmission view.
- Communicating security features - The motif of the portrait of Aleko Konstantinov has been used in the intaglio print, in the watermark and in the RollingStar "R" LEAD stripe. The repetition of motifs is designed for "cross-referencing" and making it easier for the untrained user to verify the authenticity of the Banknote.
- The Banknote has been post-print varnished for durability with "Oberthur's Fuduciare's Securicoat Ultra".
- The Banknotes feature Simultouch (TM) which is also from Oberthur Fuduciare (or intaglio-printed thick and thin lines along the short sides asan aid for the visually impaired users and they can include its inter-active UV feature Avalon.
- The Banknotes feature Simultouch (TM) which is also from Oberthur Fuduciare (or intaglio-printed thick and thin lines along the short sides asan aid for the visually impaired users and they can include its inter-active UV feature Avalon.
Inclusion of these most modern printed Banknote security features has the combined effect of not only increasing the attractiveness of the 100 Levs Banknote, but also its security. Not only this, the Banknote aptly showcases Bulgaria's 21st Century outlook and perspective.
The whole project represents an example of impressive collaboration between the Bulgarian National Bank (BNB), Oberthur Fiduciare AD (the print-works in Sofia, jointly owned by BNB and Oberthur Fiduciare) and Papierfabrik Lousienthal.
Incidentally, following its successes in 2015, 2017 and 2018, this is the fourth time that a product from G & D Currency Technology has received the prestigious "Regional Banknote of the Year Award".
The 2018 Award was won by a 500 Dram Banknote from Armenia, featuring Noah's Ark and exhibiting the latest security features.
