The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) has proclaimed the year 2019 as "The International Year of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements "IYPT-2019") in its 74th Plenary Meeting held on 20.12.2017.
1869 is considered as the year of discovery of the Periodic System by the Russian scientist, Dmitri Mendeleev.
In addition, IYPT-2019 also commemorates the 150th Anniversary of the establishment of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements. (1869-1919).
The International Year aims to recognise the importance of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements as one of the most important and influential achievements in modern science, reflecting/capturing the essence not only of Chemistry, but also of Physics, Biology and other basic sciences disciplines.
It is a unique tool, enabling scientists to predict the appearance and properties of matter on Earth and in the rest of the Universe.
The initiative for IYPT-2019 is supported by IUPAC ("International Union of Pure and Applied Chemists") in partnership with the "International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP), European Association for Chemical and Molecular Science (EuCheMS), the International Council for Science (ICSU), International Astronomical Union (IAU) and the International Union of History and Philosophy of Science and Technology (IUHPS).There were several other organisations from around the world that supported the naming of 2019 as "IYPT-2019".
The IYPT-2019 is an opportunity to reflect upon many aspects of the Periodic Table, including its history, the role of women in research, global trends and perspectives on science for sustainable development , as well as, the social and economic impacts of this field.
Oldest Periodic Table Chart (s)?
Interestingly, on 01/19, the University of St. Andrews Communications office stated that possibly the oldest Periodic Table Chart was located in Scotland, during a cleaning up process in the University's School of Chemistry in 2014. This Table is supplied with German annotation and was supposedly produced in Vienna in 1885.
Another pointer to the oldest Periodic Table location is in a lecture hall in St. Petersburg State University. The symbols of chemical elements along with their atomic weights were written in oil on a specially treated canvas.
Dmitri Mendeleev discovered the Periodic Law in 1869. It states that if chemical elements are arranged in the order of increasing atomic numbers, their chemical properties go through cyclical changes with elements of similar properties recurring at intervals. Only 63 elements were known in 1869 and the first table charts included gap cells predicting future discoveries of new elements. For example, the table from St. Petersburg University has a gap between Calcium (Ca, 40) and Titanium, 48). It was filled with Scandium (Sc, 44) in 1879, three years after the table chart was produced.
The Commemorative Stamps:
On 12.04.2019, the State Committee of Information Technology and Communications of the Kyrgyz Republic has put into circulation a Kyrgyz Express Post postage stamp titled "The International Year of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements".

The First Day Cover (FDC) issued on the occasion. It shows at left a hand-written Note by Dmitri Mendeleev showing his notes on the Periodic Table of Chemical elements. The FDC is titled, at left, going from bottom upwards - "INTERNATIONAL YEAR OF THE PERIODIC TABLE OF CHEMICAL ELEMENTS."
At top right is a 100 KGS Stamp, cancelled with a special pictorial First Day Cancellation, which shows the letters "IYPT-2019".
In the centre of the Special Cancellation Handstamp is an image of the globe and Mendeleev's face, symbolising the impact that Mendeleev's scientific contributions had on the entire world. The Cancellation is of Bishkek Head Office and is dated "12.04.2019".
The Size of the FDC is 162.0 mm x 114 mm and the Number of FDCs issued are 250 pieces.
The 100 KGS Stamp released shows a portrait of Dmitri Mendeleev with some chemical elements in the background.
The Size of this stamp is 69.0 mm x 27.5 mm; Its Face Value is 100 KGS; Perforation is comb 14: 14 1/2; No. of Stamps issued: 5,000 pieces.
The Cancelled Stamp of 100 KGS measures 69.0 mm x 27.5 mm
The Mini-Sheet (MS) of four stamps of 100 KGS each, shows the Periodic Table in the background. On top is the logo of the IYPT-2019.
The Size of this MS is 159.0 mm x 108.0 mm and the Number of Mini-Sheets issued is 1250.

The Maximum Card or Maxim Card issued in this Stamp release shows a picture of Dmitri Mendeleev, with a 100 KGS Cancelled Handstamp with the Special pictorial stamp.
The Maxim Card measures 105 mm x 148 mm and the number of Maxim Cards issued is 200 pieces.
