967) International Year of Indigenous Languages (2019): A 50  Cent Coin issued by the Royal Australian Mint (RAM) in collaboration with the Aborginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS) in Circulation, Uncirculated and Silver Proof variants of Collector Coins: Coin issue date - 08.04.2019:

The United Nations General Assembly UNGA)  has designated the year 2019 as the "International Year of Indigenous Languages (IYIL)".

The Royal Australian Mint (RAM) has commemorated the IYIL with the issue of a 50 Cent circulation coin released into circulation on 08.04.2019, in Adelaide.

The coin has been developed in collaboration with the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS).

The Reverse of the 12-sided 50 Pence Coin frosted uncirculated Collector version placed against a background of the Obverse and Reverse sides of a Coin Card containing the Collector version of the Uncirculated Coin. The Coin is also available in a fine Silver Proof Variant.

The design was developed in consultation with 14 indigenous language groups from around Australia, including the traditional people of Adelaide - the Kaurna

The Coin design incorporates 14 translations for the word "coin" from some of the many indigenous languages in Australia. This coin is a "celebration" of Australia's unique and diverse indigenous languages and an effort to highlight, preserve , protect and revitalise indigenous languages of Australia.

Languages are central to the identity of indigenous Australians and the Second National Indigenous Languages Survey conducted in 2014 by AIATSIS recognised that remaining connected to Languages strengthens well-being and self-esteem in indigenous communities. Indigenous languages carry more meaning than the words themselves.

Only 120 Australian indigenous languages  are known to be spoken present day, as per the Survey. This is an alarming decline from the over 250 Indigenous Australian Languages that were known/being spoken in 1788.

The issue of these coins is therefore a milestone in recognising the diverse cultures that have shaped present day Australia over its entire history.

Interestingly, the mint is swapping the Circulation, Uncirculated and Proof Coins in Adelaide, Canberra, Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane where this coin is being made available in exchange for cash or coins.
