About International Women's Day (8M) - 08.03.2022 (8M):

The first general women’s strikes to demand gender equality in Spain took place on 08.03.2018 and 08.03.2019. (It was dubbed as the "8M" Movement). 

Both strikes were an amazing success, becoming world references for feminism. Nevertheless, in 2019 the feminists on Twitter were forced to cope with a great deal of trolling against them.

The response on Twitter clearly indicated that discourse on social networks has become a key factor in feminist social mobilizations and that this feminist digital activism will be critical in the continued dissemination of the claims for gender equality in Spain in later years.

The Stamp Block Sheet: 

Correos Espana (Spanish Post) has issued on 08.03.2022 a Stamp Block Sheet dedicated to International Women's Day which falls on 08.03 every year. 

For the first time, a series of stamps are being issued, which will include all the women's stamps issued so far by Correos Espana (although they may belong to different Philatelic Series), which will be united by the same design line honouring the "8M" feminists.

All the stamp designs in which women are the main protagonists of this 2022 Stamp Series, and the Block sheet, dedicated to the 8M have been designed by Isa Muguruza.

For the generic stamp the true meaning of feminism is depicted, which is a struggle that women exercise in order to achieve equal rights. Feminist women are therefore women who help other women and their combined efforts is what leads to real changes.

The combined efforts of women have been depicted through a beautiful and inspiring “landscape” - like a wild field. 

The hands of two women holding (helping) each other and from them emanating a lot of flowers is shown, which intends to inspire the new generations to continue with a "legacy" that these great women have trail blazed - and to continue advancing all together.

The campaign was aimed at honouring 8 women who have done a great job in the feminist history and they themselves have been the main inspiration for this stamp. 

Why Flowers?

The flowers act as a narrative link between portrait and portrait, giving a sense of collection, but they also have a great symbolic charge.

The flower as a symbol has been related to femininity and women throughout history. There is a relationship with roots, the land, fertility, even in all its movements and seasonalities that can be compared to global cycles. 

In addition, due to its shape, the flower has often been used as a symbol to represent the female reproductive system. 

Flowers represent diversity, beauty, connection with nature, life, growth, transformation and strength (they even grow on asphalt).

The metaphor of the flowers allows one to bring together several ideas- the work of the M8 women is like a seed that they planted and that women of today have to nurture so that it continues to grow.

The Technique:

The technique used on this stamp illustration is completely digital, from the first sketches to the last final art is made with photoshop. The color palette used is mainly pink, purple, yellow and blue tones mainly. 

The First Day Cover (FDC) shows the design of the stamp at left. The Stamp Block Sheet is affixed at top right, cancelled with a special cancellation stamp/postmarkinscribed - "DIA INTERNACIONAL DE LA MUJER #8MTodoElAno." The Cancellation is of Madrid Post office and the date of cancellation is - "08.03.2022".
