The German Federal Republic’s Ministry of Finance and Munze Deutschland have begun a new series of coins which focusses on the "Great Biodiversity of Insects", we share the planet with. 

The Header/Banner is titled "INSEKTENREICH" ("WONDERFUL WORLD OF INSECTS") at top right, with the Reverse and Obverse of the 5 Euro Cupro-nickel coin presented against a background image of an insect world habitat.

Titled the “Wonderful World of Insects,” the Coin Series will feature the Big Four, which encompasses beetles, dipterans (flies and mosquitoes), hymenoptera (bees, wasps, ants), and butterflies, of which 80% of all known insects belong to. 

The Coins:

The Reverse and Obverse of the 5 Euro Coin shown placed side-by-side

The first design features the greater insect kingdom with a general insight into the world of insects. 

The Reverse of the 5 Euro Cupro-nickel Coin depicts a diverse habitat with water, land, and air, as well as various insects that enliven this space. 

It has been skilfully brought to the forefront visually by the delicate colouring and the filigree representation of the animal and plant world. 

Digital printing has been used for the first time, in which colour is applied to the relief.

The incused text "INSEKTENREICH" (“Insect Kingdom”) is placed below the primary design forming the basis for a harmonious and successful representation on the first coin in the series. 

The Obverse of the 5 Euro Cupro-nickel Coin, which is common for all coins in the series, and features a stylised Eagle centred with the name of the issuing country - "BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND" placed directly above along the edge. 

The denomination "5 EURO" is just under the name of the issuer. Also incorporated into the design are twelve stars below the eagle, which represent the European Union, and are arranged along the lower edge. 

The mintmark "F" is seen between the second and third star representing the Mint of Stuttgart, and the year of issue "2022" is seen between the ninth and tenth star. 

The incused inscription on the edge of the coin reads "WONDERWELT INSECTEN" (“Wonderful World of Insects”).  

The remaining coins will be released within a two-year period beginning in 2022 and ending in 2024, which will include nine coins in total. The schedule is as follows:
