2815) "The Neutron Stars", Austria: Third Coin in a Silver 20 Euro three-Coin Series    titled   "The Uncharted Universe," minted  by  the    Austrian Mint, Vienna: Date of Coin issue: 10.05.2023:

The "Uncharted Universe Coin Series":

The "Uncharted Universe" Coin Series:

The Header/Banner showing The Milky Way, the Obverse and Reverse of the 20 Euro Silver Coin, and the Austrian Mint Logo ("MUNZE OSTERREICH"). It is titled "DAS UNCHARTED UNIVERSUM" ("The Uncharted Universe"). Also seen is the "S" shaped structure of the Coin.

Humans have been fascinated by the vastness of the universe and the more one learns about it the more fascinated one becomes. With the help of these coins and what one learns about the universe along the way, one will reach the final frontier, beyond which lie the unknown and the unexplored.

Consisting of three coins, the Silver 20 Euro "The Uncharted Universe Coin Series" takes us to the deepest depths of the universe and gives the beholder a fascinating glimpse of three physical-astronomical phenomena. With the help of these three coins, one reaches the final frontier, beyond which lie the unknown and the unexplored.

Together with experts, this Coin Series takes a close look at three physical-astronomical phenomena – "The Milky Way", "Black Holes" and "Neutron Stars".

The “Unchartered Universe” series includes three pieces that have never existed before

This series allows the collector to travel into the depths of the Universe and observe three breathtaking astronomical phenomena up close:

- the first of which is the Milky Way (2021)

- the second piece, The Black Hole, takes one beyond the “event horizon” of this unique phenomenon (2022).

- the Neutron Star, the third and final piece in the series, shows how a massive star, combined with gravitational collapse, becomes one of the densest stellar objects in the universe (2023).

In addition, a new series of five 20 Euro Silver Coins of this type will be issued at a rate of one coin per year, until 2028. These coins will be interpretations of five other astronomical phenomena.

The "Neutron Stars" - the Third Coin in the Series:

The Reverse and Obverse of the Neutron Star Coin placed side-by-side.

The Neutron Star Coin, the third and final coin in "The Uncharted Universe Coin Series", shows how a massive star, combined with gravitational collapse, becomes one of the densest stellar objects in the universe (2023).

In the centre of The Neutron Star coin, a hemisphere curves inwards on one side and outwards on the other. Neutron stars are still something of a mystery, but this little masterpiece makes them a lot more tangible.

Among the densest stellar objects in the universe, neutron stars are heavier than the Sun itself. A superb representation of this unique galactic phenomenon, this little beauty weighs considerably less.

Featuring a semi-sphere in its centre that curves inwards on one side and outwards on the other, the last coin in The Uncharted Universe series is designed to be a simplified representation of that unique galactic phenomenon – the Neutron Star

There are thought to be up to one billion Neutron Stars in the Milky Way.

This figure is obtained by estimating the number of stars that have undergone a supernova explosion, a spectacular explosion of a massive star.

Combined with gravitational collapse, this creates a compact and super-dense object known as a neutron star.

After black holes, neutron stars are the densest stellar objects in the universe

Even denser than atomic nuclei, which is a good way to think of them, neutron stars are heavier than the Sun itself - a teaspoonful of neutron star would weigh as much as 1,000 Cheops pyramids

Neutron stars can rotate at very high speed – up to 700 revolutions per second – and have a magnetic field 12 to 15 orders of magnitude stronger than that of the Earth, which is a thousand to a million times stronger than the strongest man-made magnetic fields ever produced.

The Coin:

From something very small – a coin – one becomes acquainted with the infinitely large and even reach out to galaxies that no human has ever seen before.

This Coin illustrates the "Neutron Star" phenomenon:

On the Obverse of the 20 Euro Silver Coin, the combination of the convex and the concave surfaces  results in an S-shaped Silver surface upon which the "NEUTRON STAR" is depicted.

The peripheral inscriptions are - "REPUBLIK OSTERREICH" ("Republic of Austria"), "20 EURO" (on the upperand lower peripheries respectively). The Year of issue is inscribed as "2022".

On this face - a cone rises from the flat silver surface, representing the curvature of space-time.

The words "Crust" ("KRUSTE") and "Core" ("KERN") are marked in German on this face.

"Crab Pulsar ("KREBSPULSAR") is the name of a Neutron Star that was created from a supernova in the year 1054, while "1,4 M" refers to the Neutron Star’s solar mass, "30rps" to its rotation speed per second and "r~10km" to its radius.

The Reverse of the 20 Euro Silver Coin features the Neutron Star appears through a coloured imprint and a stylised representation of its magnetic field.

The “Uncharted Universe” Collector Case:

A specially designed Collector Case is available to house and present the three-coin set. The substance of the universe is brought to the point and stored in a stylish cassette. The lid is attached with magnets and can be removed, the insert can be opened, so the coins can be viewed from both sides.

The inlay can be set up in such a way that the case can be easily turned into a mini-exhibit of the universe, in which the phenomena on the coins can be explored from both sides.
