2929) "Global Heating/Warming", Austria: 21st Coin in the Series: An innovative 25 Euro Silver-Niobium Coin issued by the Mint of Austria on a subject of great concern to us all: Date of Coin issue: 12.04.2023:

Recently, I attended a children's painting event at the Reliance Smart Retail Outlet in our locality.

The topics included - 'Global Warming" and "My Mother Earth". I witnessed the enthusiastic response among the participants.

The paintings submitted were beyond inspirational and I thought that the children are well aware of the planet they are inheriting from our generations and are willingly contributing their best in keeping the planet in good shape. It was truly heart-warming.

Every one of them seemed intent on making their own contributions towards reducing pollution, keeping trees healthy etc.

I am sanguine that the "Future of the Planet" is safe in their hands.

Silver Niobium Coin  having as its theme - "Global Heating":

The Austrian Mint’s Silver-Niobium Coin Series has brought out its 21st annual release. Called "Global Heating" an intricate design has been presented once again from the Austrian Mint stable.

This is the second time that I am revisiting the Austrian Mint's Silver-Niobium Coin Series after almost a decade. I have done posts on 11 of their first releases under this series (Links given below at the end of this post). However, considering that several of the Mint's Silver-Niobium Coins have been nominated and winning Awards in the prestigious Coin of The Year (COTY) Competitions, I could not help but revisit this innovative Coin Series. Every time I visit this series, I find an interesting subject has been very intricately presented on the coin designs on both faces.

About the Coin:

What is the meaning of the term global heating/warming?

Are plants adapting to climate change?

Plants adapt to environmental stress by altering their metabolism, flowering, growth, and reproduction, and by migrating toward areas with more favourable climatic conditions.

Terrestrial plants have similarly developed ways to adapt to climate change. Species like the oak tree are more tolerant to climate related stressors, they keep their stomata open in order to absorb more carbon than other tree species, and by taking in more carbon they will grow larger and faster.

What about animals?

Animals are 'shapeshifting' as the planet warms, as limbs, ears and beaks change size to adapt to rising temperatures. While these adaptations may alleviate overheating in the short term, these species cannot adapt forever.

An increase in world temperatures, especially the current increase caused by gases such as carbon dioxide that are collecting in the air around the earth and stopping heat escaping into space.

Global warming refers to the mainly human-caused rise in average temperature of the Earth's climate system. Global warming also refers to a long-term rise in global surface temperature.

What are the 3 main causes of global warming?

Burning fossil fuels, cutting down forests and farming livestock are increasingly influencing the climate and the earth's temperature.

This adds enormous amounts of greenhouse gases to those naturally occurring in the atmosphere, increasing the greenhouse effect and global warming.

First the bad news - it is getting hotter

The good news is that by acting in an environmentally friendly way, each and every one of us can play a role in limiting the temperature increase

"Global Heating", is the theme of the 2023 edition of the Austrian Mint's bestselling Silver Niobium Coin Series and is a timely reminder that we need to act before it is too late.

The temperature increase caused by humans since 1850 has already exceeded the 1°C mark. Not that this is a new insight

In 2015, the Paris Agreement set the long-term goal of limiting the temperature increase to 1.5°C and this was reaffirmed at the UN Climate Change Conference in 2021.

But the current measures for reducing greenhouse gas emissions do not go far enough for that goal to be achieved

It is now feared that a temperature increase of more than 3°C could occur by 2100, which would have catastrophic consequences for both humans and the natural world.

If, by 2030, global CO2 emissions could be reduced by 45 per cent, we would be well on the way to preventing that increase

But time is running out and we are already starting to see the disastrous effects of global heating

Extreme weather events, melting glaciers and changes in climate patterns are becoming increasingly common

Reducing energy consumption and the sustainable use of natural resources are important steps in combating such developments. Every ton of greenhouse gases that we do not produce could help avert catastrophe.

We humans can definitely do it, otherwise we will leave a barren hostile planet for the coming generations.

The Coin:

On the Reverse of the 25 Euro Silver-Niobium Coin, a globe features in the centre which deals with the economic, ecological and social aspects of sustainability ("OKOLOGIE, OKONOMIE, SOZIALES").

To the right are the silhouettes of two human faces, in front of them a sea turtle is seen swimming. Due to environmental pollution and global warming, this species is threatened with extinction.

On the outer periphery are depicted some of the species that are already facing the threat of extinction - bees, beetles, trees, fishes and shortages of water due to climate change will affect weather conditions and ultimately affect humans.

On the Obverse of the 25 Euro Silver-Niobium Coin, is depicted inside the blue and gold Niobium core a thermometer which forms part of a clock that symbolises that time is running out.

To its left is a globe on which it says +1.5°C.  On the outer periphery is depicted a blazing sun, houses and trees which will face the brunt of climate change.

On the lower periphery from left to right is mentioned - "ERDURWARMUNG. 25 EURO. REPUBLIK OSTERREICH. 2023" ("Global Warming").
