The Dakota nation is sometimes referred to as the Santee Dakota and they thrived in Wisconsin and Minnesota and are closely related to the Lakota Nation in the Eastern Montana and North and South Dakota.
According to the Dakota creation myth, it is the confluence of the Mississippi and Minnesota Rivers at Mendota in Minnesota where the Dakota people entered the Earth and is in fact the center of the universe.
It is also the site of Minnesota historic Fort Snelling where 38 Dakota people were executed following the 1862 Dakota War.
The Dakota people were hunter-gatherers who gathered wild rice, hunted woodland animals, and used canoes to fish.
Today, the Dakota live on and off reservations throughout Minnesota, the Upper Midwest and Canada. The Dakota who live in Minnesota are comprised of the Lower Bands: the Mdewakanton and Wahpekute; and the Upper Bands: the Sisseton and Wahpeton.

Long before America was a nation of states, it was a nation of tribes.
To honour these tribes, the Torrance, California-based Native American Mint struck a series of Indian Sovereign Nations coins that are authorized by each tribe.
The coins are also recognised by the Federal Government as legal tender in each tribal nation as set forth in the Constitution of the United States and from the terms of bilateral treaties that date back to the 18th century.
