The Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato Italiano –
IPZS has issued 5 Euro Silver Proof Coins celebrating the Centenary Anniversary of the National Intelligence Agencies of Italy.
The Header/Banner features a floor plan of Forte Braschi
in Rome on the Reverse while mentioning the name of the issuing country on the Obverse together with the National Emblem and the logo of the CDI.
The creation of the Servizio Informazioni Militare - SIM
occurred at a crucial moment in Italian history.
Following the end of the First
World War in 1918, the country embarked on a profound process of reorganizing
it’s institutional, administrative, and defence structures. In that context,
the need arose to coordinate the intelligence activities of the Armed Forces in
a unified manner, which until then had been fragmented between the Army, Navy,
and newly-established Air Force.
As a consequence, several steps were taken to make the
system of gathering and analysing strategic information more efficient,
fostering the awareness that National Security could not exist without a stable
and professional intelligence organisation.
These reforms led to the official
establishment on the 15th October 1925 of the Servizio Informazioni Militare
which became the first Italian joint intelligence service.
This marked the
beginning of a century-long project evolving alongside the country's political
and institutional history.
The conclusion of the Second World War saw the disbanding
of the SIM in 1949 as part of a transition period which began to re-organise
intelligence structures in light of the Italian Republic which was declared in
1946.
In place of the SIM in the same year was the establishment of the
Servizio Informazioni Forze Armate - SIFAR (Intelligence Service of the Armed
Forces) whose head of the agency was responsible for reporting directly to the
Chief of Defence Staff.
It was the first joint service in democratic Italy
which also coordinated Italy’s membership in NATO which they joined also in
1949.
SIFAR’s activities continued until 1966 when the agency was reorganised
into the Servizio Informazioni Difesa – SID (Defense Information Service) in
response to the need to modernise the structure and strengthen international
cooperation during the Cold War.
At the same time, Italy was experiencing difficult years
domestically marked by political tensions and terrorism.
These challenges
highlighted the need for a profound reform and re-think that combined
operational efficiency with democratic guarantees.
In response to domestic
changes, the SID was dissolved in 1977 and in its place, two separate agencies,
the Servizio per le Informazioni e la Sicurezza Militare – SISMI (Military
Intelligence and Security Service) and the Servizio per le Informazioni e la Sicurezza
Democratica - SISDE (Intelligence and Democratic Security Service) came into
force.
2007 saw the last and most recent change to the structure of Italian
intelligence when SISMI was replaced with the Agenzia Informazioni e Sicurezza
Esterna - AISE (External Intelligence and Security Agency) and SISDE was
replaced with the Agenzia Informazioni e Sicurezza Interna - AISI (Internal
Intelligence and Security Agency).
The Coin:
Designed by Emanuele Ferretti, the Obverse of the 5 Euro Silver Proof Coin depicts a floor plan of Forte Braschi located in Rome which is centred and the current headquarters of both the Foreign Intelligence and Security Agency.
Above and along the periphery is the inscription "FORTE BRASCHI ROMA" and below the primary design is the denomination "5 EURO" and the year of issue, "2025".
To the left of the floor plan is the letter "R" identifying the Mint of Rome.
The Obverse of the 5 Euro Silver proof Coin features the current logo of the Information System for the Security of the
Republic representing DIS, AISI and AISE which is shown near the upper half of
the design.
In the centre are the heraldic coats of arms of AISE super-imposed
over a circular map of the western hemisphere and on the left, the AISI logo
placed over a map of the eastern hemisphere – representing the international
reach of both agencies.
Below the maps is the number "100", indicative of the
centenary together with the historical logo of "SISMI" shown behind the numeral
which is placed in between the years "1925 and 2025".
Along the upper periphery is the
inscription "CENTENARIO DELLA NASCITA DELL’INTELLIGENCE ITALIANA" and under the
primary design is the additional text "REPUBBLICA ITALIANA".

are encapsulated and presented in a heavy-gauge card case with magnetic closure
