Highlight the 250th Anniversary of American Independence (1776-2026): Date/Year of Coin issue: 14.10.2025:
The Monnaie de Paris have issued the sixth Coin in their Coin Series commenced in 2000 which is a part of part of the "Great Dates of Humanity Coin Series".
The coins replicate a historical French medal issued by the Monnaie de Paris (The French Mint) on Benjamin Franklin.
Since 2020, Monnaie de Paris has been retracing the
History of American Independence through a collection of proof quality
collector coins.
The designs of the coins are inspired by historic
antique medals from the archives of the Monnaie de Paris crafted over time.
The
sub-theme is also part of the Great Dates of Humanity theme, which began in
2019 with collector coins marking the fall of the Berlin Wall followed by the
First man on the Moon and the D-Day anniversary.
In 2020, the launch the History of American Independence
series commenced with a coin highlighting the arrival of La Fayette in Boston
in 1780.
Washington being appointed commander of the Continental Army in 1775
in Boston followed in 2021, the Great Seal of the USA in 2022, Libertas
Americana medal in 2023, and the Battle of Cowpens in 2024.
The series will conclude with the last coin planned for release in 2027.
The Coin released in 2025 features Benjamin Franklin and the Winged Genius medal is in the spotlight.
Benjamin Franklin
was America’s original Renaissance man, known for his contributions as an
inventor, scientist and diplomat. As a Founding Father, he was notably involved
in drafting the United States Declaration of Independence along with its
primary author, Thomas Jefferson.
The Coins:
Minted in 1784, the Benjamin Franklin Winged Genius
medal was the work of eminent engraver Augustin Dupré of the French mint from
1791.
The exceptional medal was not the result of a royal commission, but
rather Dupré's own spontaneous tribute to Benjamin Franklin, whom he admired as
much for his scientific work on electricity as for his diplomatic role.
The Reverse of the Gold and Silver Coins feature an intricately detailed standing figure of the winged Genius
holding a lightning bolt in front of a temple with a lightning rod.
At his
feet, a broken crown and sceptre which was symbolic of the triumph of a break
with Great Britain and King George III.
Additional elements such as a Lightning
rod refers to Franklin's invention and the Latin legend around the design which
reads "ERIPUIT COELO FULMEN SCEPTRUMQUE TYRANNIS" ("He snatched the thunderbolt
from the sky and the sceptre from the tyrants") is testament to Franklin’s
contribution to science and freedom.
The Obverse of the Gold and Silver Coins featured a bust of
Benjamin Franklin, inspired from the sculpture by Jean-Antoine Houdon.
The
inscription surrounding the image of Franklin reads "BENJ. FRANKLIN NATUS BOSTON
XVII JAN. ("Benjamin Franklin born in Boston 17 January 1706") with his year of
birth shown in Roman numerals "MDCCVI") along the lower periphery below the bust.
Minting of these coins:
- To mint these coins, the engraving workshop started
with a resin casting from the original medal.
- The surface was scanned using a
laser, which interprets the relief and transforms it into a 3D file and then
reworked to correct any imperfections.
- The MdP team readjusted the engraving
height according to the diameter for the three high relief coins and for the
polished coin to ensure aesthetic consistency.
- For the smallest diameter, the
dies are machined using a laser engraving machine.
- For the 85.00 mm diameter coin,
machining was carried out using a digitally controlled milling machine.
- The
final step consists of a meticulous inspection under a microscope and manual
retouching by the Master Engravers. This stage is essential to ensure
impeccable quality and a faithful reproduction of the original medal.
- The Obverse of all gold and silver versions features the
same design found on the famed medal, a bust of Benjamin Franklin inspired by
the sculpture by Jean-Antoine Houdon.
- The initials RF (representing "Republique
Francaise") is shown just to the lower left of the image of Franklin and the year
of issue, 2025 is seen on the right of the bust in a vertical direction.
- To
replicate the strike of a medal, the surface of the gold and silver pieces has
been oxidised to replicate the patina of an aged medal.
The Coin has the following highlights:
- The Reverse features the image of a standing Winged
Genius pushing back lightning towards a lightning conductor and is placed in the centre.
- A
lightning rod is shown atop a temple on the left near the edge and a broken
sceptre and crown is seen at the feet of the winged genius at the lower right.
- Along the crown is mentioned the face value 250 to 20 EURO is placed just to the
right of the standing figure and the text SCULPSIT ET DICAVIT AUG. DUPRE, ANNO
MDCCLXXXIV (Sculpted and dedicated by Augustin Dupré in the year 1784) is
placed under the primary design and above the periphery.
